BOMBshell: Karlien Seegers

Welcome to theBOMBsurf's BOMBshell of the week interview.  You have an amazing love of the beach and of the ocean. Tell us about that.

There's a kind of peace that I find within myself when chilling on a secluded beach, with miles of white sand and blue Ocean as far as the eyes can see. Even better when you spot that perfect set coming in... If  I could - I would without a doubt live in a bungalow on hot beach, having to wear nothing but a bikini and a string of leather and shells around my ankle...my hair in tangles and the taste of coconuts and fresh fruit :-P

To me, there is no better sunset than the one you can stare at when you're sitting on your board after an easy paddle out when there are no waves....

How’s your surfing coming along?

After many many sessions I'm finally getting there...some sessions are more successful than others... I am stoked to be out there...but I'm not going to lie, I've had my fair share of wipe-outs, and often when I do catch a wave, (being a girl and all) I get soo excited that I forget to concentrate on the wave (hence the wipe-outs haha)

I would love to take enough time out to spend it only on the beach, concentrating on my surfing... but at heart - my passion is there

Now you come from a very interesting background...you dad was a production designer and your mom was a costume designer, right? You were clearly destined for the bright lights!

Dad still is a production designer, my mom Annie also still doing costume designing as well as owning Annie's Wardrobe in Cape Town... myself and my two brothers practically grew up on set.

This is where my passion for the film industry and art was born. I also work behind the bright lights ;-) as a wardrobe stylist on TV commercials, stills and the occasional feature film.

Juggling styling and modeling to me makes more sense than just doing modeling on its own. I'm glad I realised soon enough that a career as a model is indeed a shelf life.
And for my own sanity - I need the balance. And I have lots of different dreams.

Tell us about Annie’s studios?

Now this was one of those dreams - together with my brother (Business Guru Ernst) opening Annie's Studios has been a positive move.

Annie's Studios is a successful Boutique style Daylight studio, based in Salt river, CTN. We pride ourselves on good service and a facility where clients and crew can truly feel at home and get through the day with it being a pleasant experience. The light in our studio is amaaazing - and the cool thing is that it is located in the same building as Annie's Wardrobe. Which makes it a breeze for any stylist or art-department person.

What is your role, besides being the gorgeous face of the business?

Being a Managing Partner, and spreading the word of our fabulous studio :-P  It's a good combo - Ernst doing most of the admin side,  and with me having the opportunity to work with clients and photographers and all sorts of interesting people...Marketing and networking is an essential part of business.

I am also an aspiring photographer - with many crazy ideas and visions. Having a space to bring these ideas to life, I hope to somehow help contribute to pushing fashion in South-Africa that extra mile, which is very exciting - I am busy putting a fashion range together as well.

Tell us a little about your modeling career - how did you start and share a few highlights with us?

When I was 13 I had the opportunity and interest to start modeling - but I am now very thankful that my parents sheltered me from this until I was 15.

A scout and Agency owner "discovered" me at the CTN airport and from there I went in to shoot my first test and put together a z-card etc.

I remember being very happy, having booked my first job at my very 1st casting - for Orange Communications (TVs and stills for the USA)

After that I just kept trying my best, and in time I’ve done some cool jobs and campaigns. To name a couple:  Face of Faces for the United Arab Emirates, Emirates Airline Campaign, 2x Emirates Woman covers (one which I got the cover in stead of hot celeb  Angelina Jolie), Winner of SA Sports Illustrated in 2005, my 2nd campaign for Charlie Revlon which is launching now in Feb 2010, KFC TVs "I want Another One" , and the latest is the Puma campaign, launching with Woolworths.

Our readers know Mr. Justin Polkey's work pretty well, since he shoots out fashion for the mag - how was it working with him on this latest Puma campaign?

Justin is a great photographer and now making his mark a great Director as well.   I had a fantastic time working with him on the Puma campaign.

There is no doubt in my mind that this Puma campaign will make quite a huge stir - as it should. I can't wait to see it... I trained hard and did my best as this was a fantastic opportunity and I am very grateful for it.

We're led to believe you had to do some pretty physical and stunt orientated work - what's that all about???

HaHa - That's all about the adrenaline - lots of hard work and the same amount of fun!  I enjoy stunts very much - it's difficult to explain - but easy to enjoy! I hope to do much more of this in time - maybe a movie filled with crazy mind blowing stunts!! That would be awesome!

Who is your favourite fashion icon and why?

I always get asked this question, and I still don't have a favourate  guys. To me fashion is all about freedom to express yourself, rather than following a trend.

Whenever I put on an outfit from my own collection of clothes - it truly resembles how I feel and the choice of color very much depends on my mood.

What do you think are going to be the popular trends on the beach in 2010?

Lots of purples, turquoise and natural tones.... Accessorize your tanned body with something from the earth, or ocean.
I hope that playing touch rugby on the beach is NOT a trend in 2010 - but rather some beach football.

If we gave you a free surf lesson - with all the equipment and a pro coach - would you take us up on it?

Yeah!! I wouldn't think twice about it.

What's your impression of the surfing culture like in SA, particularly Cape Town? Have you been to Aussie or America and seen their beach lifestyles, do we compare at all?

Cape Town has got some awesome waves, great surf spots and lots of very good looking surfers all around. I'd say it's a pretty fantastic culture. Not going to lie , would be even more awesome if the water was a bit warmer (like in the States or in the South of France )  but what's a good wetsuit for hey?

One thing that seems to be a global thing - is “You DO Not pull in on someone else's wave!! Especially a locals’ - and especially if you are not a local- you should know better :-)

Thanks, Karlien.

Thanks for the chat guys! Now let's hit the beach I'd say.

So right now, South Africa's only other Professional surfer on Tour stares upwards into the face of the Mid-year cut-off. Travis must be a nervous guy. One heat. One heat at Teahupoo. He has to make this heat, or it's all over. Should Travis come second in his next 30 mins of surfing, he will be officially relegated back to the QS. What does this mean? Well for a start, it means no more guaranteed... <more>
