Who blew up?
1. Steve ‘Chappy’ Adshade.
Steve ‘Chappy’ Adshade has a fair amount to keep him busy BUT he always makes time to surf when the surf is good. Recently he was in the water at 4:45am and surfed till lunchtime in some unseasonal but cooking eastern cape waves. Around mid morning Chappy picked off an absolute cracker backdoored two barrel sections, took the high line through a usually unmakable section and ended up linking 3 separate waves into one ride. There was a camera man recording this but his memory card had a meltdown half way through the ride because it was too long! Witnesses estimate that he rode that one wave for over two minutes... Shew what a start to the year.
2. Greg Emslie
Several hours behind his boss (Greg is the Oakley Africa Team Manager) Greg also took to the water. In a crowd of fairly decent surfers he was the standout. His WCT pedigree and love of right point breaks putting him in a league of his own. Awesome to watch and a message to our youngsters of just how good you have to be to make it on the tour.

3. Davey Weare
Davey had a shocker last year on the WCT, he’ll be the first to admit that, but man is it awesome watching this guy free surf. Davey blends a powerful and fluid carving approach with some serious new school flair. Watching him in the same session as Greg and Chappy one couldn’t help but feel he hasn’t performed anywhere near his peak in contests yet. His surfing on that day was pure poetry.

And who blew it?
3. John McCarthy
| “What the F@#!! are you doing with an ironing board out here pal?” exclaimed an amused local “That thing doesn’t even have a leash...” Was the comment I heard paddling out on my Alaia last week. Shortly after that I lost my board for the first of what turned out to be 3 very interesting swims across the bricks to go and fetch it. Every time I got back out there the local just checked me out like I was really dof. “You’ve spent more time swimming after that forken thing than riding it.” He observed dryly as I set off one more time to go and fetch it. |
2. Stacy, Roydon and Craig K
Arrived just as the wind turned side onshore. Sorry guys but for the six hours previously it was perfect and offshore, ask Chappy
1. SAA
Once again at the mercy of these clowns (apologies Mark and Catfoot) we tried to book tickets. No sooner had we found some cheap fares than they were all gone. At the last minute just before midnight we checked again bingo back on. We quickly booked and off we went. On arrival board tail and nose smashed. Thanks guys. On return flight delayed by 3hrs...eish and the World Cup hasn’t even started!
