Who blew up?
1. Mick Fanning.
Well well well, in July who would have thought? A seemingly few short months later Mick stands crowned as the 2009 ASP Men’s World Champion. It was a devastating effort and the rewards are just. What Mick has done is breath life into the tour and dispel the notion that it’s won or lost by the half way point. BMT personified!
2. Greg Long.
BMT is about reaching deep and doing exceptional things in exceptional circumstances. That is exactly what Greg did in his second heat. He reached so deep infact that he was able to overcome a rampant Kelly Slater and in so doing basically become the first surfer to win the ‘Triple Crown’ of Big Wave surfing with wins now at Mavericks, Dungeons and now The Eddie. For a softly spoken Californian that’s not bad at all, when you consider that just riding waves of that magnitude with that kind of commitment is a lifetime achievement for any surfer. To beat the best on their day is just exceptional. Respect.

3. Travis, Rosy, Nikita and Jordy.
| These are our warriors for next year. They have all secured their berths on the WCT which is the big league. Well done guys we know you’ll make us proud. |
And who blew it?
3. Everyone in CT who missed the Wavescapes art auction and opening screening of the film festival.
These guys keep getting better and better and doing this and it’s become a special part of the Cape Summer Scene. If you were in CT and missed it, you missed out!

2. Sunny
Anyone who was watching the webcast of the Pipe Masters will have felt for Sunny when he rocked up late for his heat and was replaced by a local wildcard. Sunny has been making a huge comeback this season with podium finishes at Sunset and in The Eddie. To throw away your chance of a Triple Crown victory when you need it most to restart your career by being late must be heartbreaking.

1. Parko.
I was rooting for Parko. He’s such a cool guy and such a beautiful surfer to watch. He’s back from his injury and looking fitter than ever. He was rampant in the first half of the year, but injuries and setbacks derailed him in the second half. I think this second will turn into one of the pivotal points in Parko’s career. It is either going to make him or break him because he came so close.
