Online Mag

Issue 7 - Winter 2010
Issue 7. The much anticipated Black & White issue. Yes, that's right - the entire issue including all ads and editorial, printed in full colour Black & White. In this issue we show the beauty of what surfing as an art form, sport and global subculture is all about. We have created a world first, not just a benchmark for SA surf publishing, but to our best knowledge, the first entirely Black & White surf mag printed since colour printing became available a few decades ago. The issue starts with a feature called "Chiaroscuro" - introduced by photographer Chris Bickford, an art gallery of the best of Black & White surfing imagery. John McCarthy then explores the new short board revolution by analyzing Dane Reynolds, Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith's, shorter, fatter wave riding equipment in a feature called "Six Deep and the Dumpster Diver." Iain Evans then re-visits the issue of the Streetchildren at Durban's New Pier in "The Transformation moment and environmentalist Kerry Wright takes a frank look at the proposed Nuclear power-plant scheduled to be erected at Thyspunt, just a few kilometers from JBay. Daniel Beatty then gives us an insight into living and surfing in Japan. The "Afterburn" features 3 very interesting surfing personalities in SA surfing - founder of Kauai, John Berry; Custodian of Surfing Heritage SA, John Whittle, and Surfing South Africa's Robin De Kock. Finally, Alice McGregor rounds off the mag with an hilarious look at the East London surfing scene through the eyes of it's groms in the aptly titled feature "The Groms of Slumtown". Enjoy.

Issue 6 - Autumn 2010
Issue 6 was sent to 8000 subscribers in March 2010 and the feedback was immediate and overwhelming! The phrase "best issue yet" seemed to be a recurring one. Perhaps it was something to do with the fact that some of the biggest and craziest waves ever ridden were captured on camera and published in this issue, in a feature called "Big Game Hunters" covering the South African domination of Big Wave surfing in both the Northern and Souther Hemispheres. Twiggy Baker snagged the cover riding a MASSIVE wave at Jaws, and local hero Chris Bertish won international acclaim winning the Big Wave event at Mavericks in Northern California. Former WCT surfer Greg Emslie rates the 4 SA WCT surfers chances on the 2010 tour, while we take readers on a surf tour of Tasmania with Dr. Philip Chapman. Some of the acclaim was certainly reserved for 2 very insightful articles on facing fear, by Paddy Upton and Ocean Power as an alternative energy source, by Kerry Wright - both respected experts in their fields. Finally, Mad Mutt reports on "The most pumpingest summer ever" in a hilarious look at the Cape scene which scored waves for 4 months solid.

Issue 5 - Summer 2010
Issue 5 was revolutionary in that the publication was presented in a landscape format, giving the readers a super "widescreen" print experience. 7000 subscribers received this issue as the demand for the publication continued to grow. The colourful, illustrated summer cover was designed by Garth Robinson and featured Jordy Smith in action. The main features included "Mind surfing" a look at some of the greatest line ups in the surfing world, "One track mind" an adventure by railway through SA's secret wave playground, the introduction of the ancient art of Alaia riding in "Shimmer and shine", a look at "The rock 'n roll surf swindle" of surfers who live to surf and surf to live, "The Soundtrack to Surfing" by Miles Masterson, and a look at "The Wild Coast" by the Malherbe brothers, Andre and David.

Issue 4 - Spring 2009
By the time issue 4 went to print the subscription list was at over 6000 and growing. This issue's cover saw Devyn Mattheys locked into a perfect tube at secret location. Issue 3 - Winter 2009
Issue 3 saw subscriber numbers to theBOMBsurf publication jump to over 5000! The waiting list kept growing and surfers started to talk about theBOMBsurf everywhere. This issue focused on the radical, futuristic nature of the sport. Balitto's Alan Johns snagged the cover shot with a ridiculously high inverted punt and the features included articled such as "Tubed - A secret world" by Shaun Tomson, "The Boys from the Bay" by Pat Flanagan, possibly one of the most talked about pieces so far called "Localism, and the fine art of treading lightly" by John McCarthy, 5 adventurous girls hit Mozambique in "It's a wonderful life" by Tara Hossack and Craig Ritchie translates the piece "Futurism in Surfing" from the Japanese intelligentsia of T.F Ittenirami.

Issue 2 - Autumn 2009
This second issue saw an increase in the print run jump from 1000 copies to 2500 as word of the publication spread and the subscriber base swelled to over 2500. A waiting list was formed. This issue's cover saw Grant "Twiggy" Baker charging a massive bomb and the features included "Stylemasters" written by Derek Hynd, a look at SA's best under 20 competitive prospects in "Next Best Things", a balanced view on the immigration of many surfers out of SA and a counter argument in "Should I stay or should I go?", a harrowing story on surfing as an alternative to life in crime and poverty on the Cape Flats and A look at the WCT 09 contenders.

So right now, South Africa's only other Professional surfer on Tour stares upwards into the face of the Mid-year cut-off. Travis must be a nervous guy. One heat. One heat at Teahupoo. He has to make this heat, or it's all over. Should Travis come second in his next 30 mins of surfing, he will be officially relegated back to the QS. What does this mean? Well for a start, it means no more guaranteed... <more>
