Who blew up?
1. Jared Aufrichtig.
Jared is one of those guys who really does walk the walk. A long-time contributor to theBOMBsurf, Jared is about to release his first photographic book on SA youth/street/surf culture, he is a dedicated surfer and an accomplished musician, he has a photographic exhibition launching in December and is a pretty frikken wild hip-hop artist to boot. This weekend he opened for a touring crew at The Zulu Jazz lounge and pretty much stole the show. In between this he was surfing, visiting Bruce Gold in hospital, helping theBOMBsurf with last minute deadline submissions and working on his exhibition. How is that for positive energy? But he doesn’t earn his BMT nomination for what he’s done, but rather the way that he does it. You will not meet a more humble, selfless dude if you tried. Big up Jared, keep spreading the love bro!
2. Blackie Smith and Iain
My esteemed partner has been spending a bit of time with his band mate Blackie recently while they hone their guitar skills and get their performance sh1t together. Last week they secured their first gig in a while up at a shady little bar in Hillcrest. They both played and sang until they couldn’t sing or play anymore, bringing the house down in the process. The rosy cheeked people on the hill didn’t know what hit them as Blackie and Iain laid into them with some with some grinding guitar work and some half decent lyrics. Word is the after party got pretty loose but no one will validate some of the claims that are currently being circulated, so we can’t actually mention them but will say this much it involves fast cars, fast women, some midnight surfing naked and some very heavy music. Nice work boys, where are you playing next?
3. All the Movember competitors
You have got to see how cool some of these entries are. In a bold masculine statement the boys have been strutting their stuff proudly. From Kelly Cestari on the North Shore to some crazy local entries the boys have out done themselves this month. If you haven’t checked it out yet go to http://www.thebombsurf.com/pages/685/movember-competition and vote on who you think rocks it hardest.
And who blew it?
3. The Eddie selectors
TheBOMBsurf has an inordinate amount of respect for this event, primarily because it is run to honour the memory of an amazing waterman and equally amazing human, Eddie Aikau, but also because it chooses as it’s arena the classic and timeless lineup of Waimea Bay. As anyone who has ever been there will tell you Waimea is a special place. From the waterfalls up in the valley through to the placid lagoon, fiery shorebreak and of course the wave itself all under the shadow of the church on the hill, you cannot help but be moved by the incredible energy of the place. Over the last decade or so there is one man who against some formidable odds at times has made it his business to be out there when ever it breaks. He has done so with a spirit so pure and friendly and with a commitment so real and determined that he earned the respect of the locals to the extent that they nicknamed him ‘Waimea Andy’. Simply put Andy Marr is the personification of stoke, and he charges hard. Very much like Eddie Aikau actually. The fact that Andy Marr or ‘Waimea Andy’ as the Hawaiians know him is not even an alternate in the Quiksilver in memory of Eddie Aikau contest is a huge blight on what Eddie stood for as a waterman and an oversight of epic proportions. Shame on you all!
.
2. Danish Government
Those f@#kers in the the Danish government who allow the Faroe Islanders to continue to hunt dolphins and whales in an archaic, outdated orgy of bloodlust. Wake up you fools!
1. Weather Hoaxers
The guys from ‘the Rand Centre of meteorological research’ who don’t actually exist but thought it would be fun to put out a cyclone warning all the same. You know what they say about crying wolf? When it’s real no one will believe you. Shame on you for getting our hopes up of a glorious early season cyclone swell on the east coast. We hope your balls rot to within millimetres of falling off with some strange tropical fungus...
