Who blew up?

1. Earth Wave Organisers.

To say that the Earth Wave CT Event held at Muizenberg on Sunday was a roaring success would be a huge understatement. Never before in the history of South African surfing have so many surfers participated harmoniously in one event. Bringing together the surfing tribe in a friendly and fun way on a mission to illustrate the importance of understanding climate change is an awesome idea. The way it was executed on Sunday was simply amazing. Serious credit must go to father and son duo of Paul and Dene Botha from Kahuna Surfing Promotions and Life’s a Beach surfing promotions. These guys recruited the top big wave surfers in CT to assist as marshals and then by and large captured the imagination of the CT surfing crew to get so many people involved. I’m not sure of the exact number of surfers that lined up on the beach, I’d be guessing at around 4-500. What was amazing though was the vibe. I’ve never seen so many surfers in one place so stoked. As you looked around everyone was smiling and laughing. As we took off on the waves it was an incredible sight. I was more or less in front of the Pavilion and on the one wave surfers stretched from the Corner to a couple of hundred meters past where I was. Amazing. The previous record of 105 surfers on a wave was beaten. At the time of going to press unofficially Earth Wave SA had set a new world record with 125 surfers riding the same wave! Watch out next year because this event is set to become a phenomenon of SA Surfing.

2. Seth Rotherham

Seth Rotherham from www.2oceansvibe.co.za. BMT is about pulling off things that ordinary people can’t do. So try this one on for size... After a week of gnarly South Easterly battering Cape Town, Friday last week dawns clear and windless. True to his hedonistic mission to purse pleasure at every opportunity Seth decides to hold an impromptu party to celebrate the start of summer. As a venue he chooses The Pool Bar on the roof of The Cape Royale Hotel in Green Point. He gets all the booze sponsored by Olmeca Black tequila. He pulls in an assortment of beautiful women, the crew from Top Billing and some crazy guys who like to party.  Guys like Sammy the Roofer, Simon the Chief and Ant Fox - photographer, surfer and social lunatic. With all of these combustible elements assembled in one place all he needs is music to spark a roaring party. So he gets on the blower and gets the boys from Goldfish to pop in and play a set. It was one of the wildest parties we’ve ever been to. It started at 2pm and we got home at 5am the next morning!.

3. Goldfish

Flip these guys rock! We were seriously bummed that we were going to miss them in Durban on Sat night, but through a quirk of fate and some good fortune we got to see them play a private gig at Seth’s party on Friday arvo in CT. Dave and Dom are such down to earth guys, so humble, yet so damn good at playing music. If you haven’t seen Goldfish live do yourself a favour and get yourself to one of their gigs, or if you see Dom in the surf give him a wave, he’s just got back from wave starved Ibiza and is frothing.

And who blew it?

3. theBOMBsurf crew

Living in ‘Sin City’, as we’ve fondly dubbed CT for the moment, has seriously taken it’s toll on these two wide eyed Durban boys. Normally we’re here when there is surf and that is where all the energy goes. This trip has seriously opened our eyes to what some of the crew get up to when there are no waves. It seems like every night is party night. To be fair to Capetonians it was an amazing weekend. A full moon, beautiful weather and the start of Summer. After insane sundowners at Caprice in Camps Bay yesterday evening the call came in from Mr Fox. ‘Porn Star Party at The Green Room in Kommetjie, pull in!’ Did we go? No. Was it a jol? Are you kidding, apparently it went off the Richter scale...

2. Everyone in CT who missed Earth Wave on Sunday

This is such an incredible event and such a unique gathering. If you had the opportunity to be there and passed it up you seriously missed out. Never before have we seen so many surfers so stoked all in one place. The cool thing is this is for the good cause of highlighting the very serious issue of climate change and it raises cash for The Shark Spotters. Don’t beat yourself up too much if you missed it though because next year we predict that this event will be massive.

1. The two drunken idiots who had to be saved from drowning in front of The Polana in Kalk Bay at 3am on Saturday

The jol that started at Seth’s gig on the roof top of the Cape Royal overflowed onto the dance floor of The Polana in Kalk Bay. In the early hours of Saturday morning revellers were treated to the site of two guys stripping off their clothes and jumping off the rocks for a midnight dip. All would have been fine if there were no waves, but that was not the case. The swell in False Bay was still wild and unsettled from the week’s howling onshore and pretty soon these two guys found themselves in serious difficulties. The surf was too gnarly to come back in over the rocks and there was a rip running away from the harbour towards Clovelly. After half an hour of struggling against the rip both guys were tiring and getting cold. Luckily for them a crew of surfers on the dance floor spotted their plight. A surfboard was fetched and the guys were rescued and paddled back to the Kalk Bay harbour where they were assisted by other revellers and the police, who by that time had also been called. Seriously not cool behaviour on behalf of the drunken swimmers as they were lucky to escape with their lives even if they did feel a tad sheepish afterwards.

The Cultural Exchange program continues, and the crew have had the opportunity to try a bunch of different shaped short boards, courtesy of Clayton, instead of their usual big wave rhino chasers. Clay has also been coaching the Capetonians on the subtleties of riding the shorter boards, which has led to much serious discussion and lots of banter! The conditions have been awesome and the surfin... <more>
