KZN Schools Surfing Week 5

KZNSSL UPDATE: WEEK 5 (1 JUNE)

by Glenn Harpur

After having to postpone last week's heats, the sight of a few two-foot runners in the Dairy amphitheatre was rather welcome. This week, however,it was strategy, not the surf, that was to prove the major challenge to competitors, with at least two of the teams in the afternoon's first heat incurring penalties for not finishing in time (tag-team rules state that all a team's surfers need to be back on the beach, each having caught two waves, by the end of the heat). But, such is life, and those surfers stung will be sure to watch the clock next time.

The second heat got off to a quick start as Bevan Willis of Northwood A ensured that he ticked the boxes on the judging criteria with some solid backhand snaps on the little walls. Northwood kept the lead throughout the heat and came out, along with Glenwood A, the afternoon's winners.

The KwaZulu-Natal Schools League (KZNSSL) now enters the home straights, and League leaders Crawford A will be looking to maintain their dominance in the run-up to the final, due to take place early in the third term.
