Who blew up:
1. Travis Logie
To say that Travis is a man on a mission this year would be an understatement. The guy has been relentless. Where our other QS hopefuls have have been sporadic at best Travis has just gone out there to do the business day in and day out on the WQS grind. His runner up finish at The Soorz Lacanau Pro pushes him up to 9th on the WQS rankings and he shows no sign of slowing down. He wants another win this year and if he keeps going like this he’ll get it. Go Boy. Anyone who can get into the finals of a contest at Lacanau in summer should get a BMT mention for that alone. That is because the task of focussing is doubly hard. For those of you who have never been there try and imagine walking past a host of naked women every time you have to go and surf a heat? Good thing Trav is married. Viva Le France, viva Travis!

2. Frank Solomon
Frank has been doing the hard yards with the big wave scene. Last summer he spent the ‘winter’ in California hoping to get some giant Mavericks, then this winter he’s been on every swell, ledge and reef he can find. Amongst the big wave crew in CT its actually unfair to single one guy out and say he’s the stand out. There are so many guys who are charging hard. James Taylor, Twiggy, Greg, Mike Schlebach, Mad Mike, Chris B, Andy, Simon, Barry, Mickey flip the list goes on...and on. Frank gets his BMT nomination for commitment and dedication and for this one photo we received. Check out this airdrop. Freaking nuts!

3. Matt Bromley

Matt’s been steadily exposing himself to the bigger stuff lately. He put in a decent performance at a Big Cape reef the other day and then backed that up with a good performance in his debut session at Dungeons on Friday. Younger guys have surfed Dungeons before, Josh Redman was the youngest at 14 but Matt is the only guy in his peer group who seems to be showing an interest in the big stuff. The funny thing is that he rips in all the contests too! One of these days he’ll have to choose his surfing path, but for now he’s just got to come up with a plausible excuse for the teachers on why he wasn’t at school on Friday last week.

And who blew it?

3. Clayton
The Alaia movement is about to be launched in SA. In fact as we speak in backyards and shaping bays around the country puzzled shapers are trying to figure out just how to shape this plank of wood so that it goes as good as Rob Machado and Dave Rastovich make it go. One of the pre runners of this movement in SA is Alwin van Breda. Alwin lost no time in getting Spowy to shape his blank and getting into the water to start figuring it out. Then he was approached by the crew from theBOMBsurf to use his prototype in a photo shoot. This attracted local surfer/shaper/coach Clayton’s attention and he asked if he couldn’t try it out. On pain of death Alwin gave up his lovingly shaped and totally original Alaia surfboard. Clayton surfed the board and while it emerged unscathed from the water it got blown over in his driveway which resulted in some heavy dings on the board. Owch, what an explanation!

2. Frankie O and Mikey Venter
Friday dawned on the KZN S Coast a gem after the manic east/west gales that spread mayhem and unhappiness all over KZN last week. The conclusion to the unpredictable late winter weather was a balmy day with a booming powerful 6’X6’ swell on the KZN Scoast. The boys were getting some pits and some beatings when the wind suddenly went onshore. Frankie and Mikey expecting a return to the previous few days mayhem called it a day and bailed. Leaving only theBOMBsurf crew in the lineup. Just as suddenly the wind swung back offshore, the tide dropped and the swell pulsed for another hour and a half. The barrels were incredible (so were the beatings).

1. The armed robbers who tried to take down Cheron last week
If this wasn’t so serious it would be funny. Imagine the hunter becoming the hunted? Well that’s exactly what happened when Cheron discovered that there was a gnarly plot to rob her at her home and her businesses. Acting fast and with the aid of a private security company she arranged a sting operation. Then with the help of both the private security co and the J-Bay police ended up taking down the bad guys en route to her house! Are you kidding me this sounds like something out of a scene from a Hollywood movie. Here’s the thing though, Cheron is pretty well connected and you have got to imagine that those robbers have now got trouble coming to them in proportions that they could never imagine.

So right now, South Africa's only other Professional surfer on Tour stares upwards into the face of the Mid-year cut-off. Travis must be a nervous guy. One heat. One heat at Teahupoo. He has to make this heat, or it's all over. Should Travis come second in his next 30 mins of surfing, he will be officially relegated back to the QS. What does this mean? Well for a start, it means no more guaranteed... <more>
