Wednesday: 3.04 pm: Ok Folks - back in the Media centre - the Billabong Pro is over. It's been an unbelieveable event, great waves, so well organised and excellent surfing all round, with 5 perfect 10s posted in the event.
If you've missed the action, here's what happened: In the Quarters Kai Otton destroyed Dingo Morrison, Joel beat Bobby Martinez, Sean Holmes went down to Dane Reynolds and Damien Hobgood knocked Taylor Knox out.
In the Semis, Kai surfed his backhand like a man posessed and couldn't beat Joel who posted a 17.83 including some super depp, succky barrels. In the other Semi, Damien Just squeaked Dane Reynolds by less than 0.06 of a point!
And here is the finals for your viewing pleasure:
| Day 3 - Wednesday 15 July: Conditions are good, waves are coming through but it's a bit bumpy out there. Micheal Borez and Dane Reynolds in the water right now. Slater and Taylor Knox next up, then Damien Hobgood and Bede Durbidge in the last heat of Round 3. Then it's Quarters! |
| South African Sean Holmes moved into the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in waves that will go down in the storied 23 year history of the event as one of the best days of competition surfing ever experienced at the iconic Supertubes surf break.....read more |
Supers local, Warren Dean gets seriously slotted, as does Slater and Curren.
Tuesday, 7:20am:
The Curse of the Mexican. We won't go there suffice to say that we scrambled out of bed this morning to find the beach packed at first light. Some leftover fog in the cockpit didn't diminish the excitement of watching the Occy Curren match up. Holy shit the entire spectator stand and competitors area was packed, the 44 and regulars watched on in awe as the Curren magic prevailed. In all truth the waves were disappointing (inconsistent 2-3') but that didn't slow Curren down. In the post surf interview that GT, the Bong Pro web commentator did, he said: "so did you take it seriously Tom?" You bet your ass he did. Curren was there to win. You could see Curren's focus from 100 miles away. There was no way Occ was going to win. It was vintage Curren and slightly disapointing Occy. Either way though I've never seen the beach so packed with so many good surfers to watch a heat. They're surfing again tomorrow so stay tuned for our take on the return bout.

JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Monday, July 13, 2009) – Sean Holmes and Greg Emslie flew the flag for South Africa in the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay today as Round 1 and the first two heats of Round 2 in the R2.7 million ASP World Tour event were completed in excellent but inconsistent one to 1.5 metre waves at Supertubes on Monday. BOMBshell interviews
Monday - 2:05pm
It was dark, the wind was freezing and the waves were starting to peel through as John and I stood at the keyhole waiting for the guys to paddle out. We chatted to Greg, Devyn and Jordy on their way out - the guys were frothing! Check out the vid coming to this page this arvo.
Then it was back to the house, careful not to wake the sleeping beauty BOMBshells as John and I scrambled for our boards and paddled out straight in fron of our house and surfed Albatross. We could see the white doughnuts peeling through from Supers, through Point and towards us with military-like precision. Taylor Steele, droped a cool little Tweet earlier this wek which said "Curren, high lines, low Supers" and that's what I was thinking when I paddled into my last wave of the morning, bottom turned, set a high line and flew across the bricks, gave it a close out bash and paddled in - stoked!
Then it was back to the contest site for Holmesy's heat - the crowd were hooting, shouting and going nuts for Sean as he laid down some clean lines and some tight little tubes, beating Dustin Barca.
Local favourite, Ryan Payne was up next against Hawaiian, Kekoa Bacalso, Ryan surfed well, but not too many bombs came through that he could capitalize on, like he did to win the Xcel Supertubes showdown last week.
Devyn Matthyes was in the next heat, and just couldn't find the waves against an inform Timmy Reyes who surfed really, really well and got 3 tubes on his last wave to see Dev off.
Greg has just advanced over Brazillian Heitor Alvesand Davey is in the water now.
I gotta go keep the BOMBshells out of trouble - John is chasing them around with a camera, so will have a pretty funny video for you guys later this arvo.
BOMBshells, Shella (left) and Rouxmia (right) interview Greg Emslie, after his victory in Heat 11.
Contest is on! 7.30am start:
Dawn on the beach at Supers. Jordy talks us through the conditions and we check out the waves.
Mike Parsons, contest director talks about making the calls.
7:30am updated from the Billabong Pro.
The swell has definitely filled in overnight. I went to sleep with it barely lapping on the shore and woke to some 2-4 foot reelers down the point. 2-4ft is something one normally wouldn't get too excited about at J-Bay but at the billabong pro this year this is the first real sign of swell that's shown itself on the fabled point. To say the surfers are frothing would be an understatement. There are 35 surfers in the water at at Supers right now and 34 of them are in the top 44. Most of them were out literally at the crack of dawn. Despite the (relatively) small size of the swell its got a bit of kick and looks like its rising. TheBOMBshells arrived late last night after a mare drive from CT. I hope to introduce you to them a bit later so check out our events page for updates but for now we're letting them sleep in. Whooohoo as I write this the first 6' set of the day reels down the point...
