Eskom is planning to build a new Nuclear Power Station. The recently released Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has recommended Thyspunt as being the preferred location. This is just 10k’s west of Seal Point, and within an hour of JBay.
This recommendation was made despite Thyspunt NOT being shown to have the least environmental impact of the 3 sites considered.
What’s really ironic is the ridiculous comment in the EIA’s recommendations (pg 11) that states: “The most important argument in favour of Thyspunt with regards to biophysical impacts is the conservation benefits that would be realised through access control and active management of the site in the event of a nuclear power station being constructed there.”
Not too sure how construction of a massive nuclear plant with its related detrimental environmental impacts could ever be championed for its conservation benefits.
We have until the 10th May to make as much noise about this as possible and lodge as many objections as possible with the relevant officials at Eskom. You can do this by filling in the petition below.
Fun days like this at Supers might not be as much fun.

So right now, South Africa's only other Professional surfer on Tour stares upwards into the face of the Mid-year cut-off. Travis must be a nervous guy. One heat. One heat at Teahupoo. He has to make this heat, or it's all over. Should Travis come second in his next 30 mins of surfing, he will be officially relegated back to the QS. What does this mean? Well for a start, it means no more guaranteed... <more>
