KZN Schools Surfing Week 3

 KWAZULU-NATAL SCHOOLS SURFING LEAGUE 2012
UPDATE: WEEK 3: 11 MAY

by Glenn Harpur

Dairy Bowl once again produced contestable conditions for Durban's high school surfers, as the KwaZulu-Natal Schools Surfing League (KZNSSL) completed its third week of competition.

Two foot rights and lefts rolled over what has proven an encouragingly reliable contest bank, as surfers jostled for points while worker-bees at New Pier, fresh from their offices, got an early start to the weekend with some very fun-looking lefts.

Conditions were fun but competition for waves was tight and the Umthombo "B" boys surfed boldly, assaulting the lip and riding with an aggressive exuberance from which their more privileged rivals could learn, and managed to take out the first heat of the afternoon. It's clear that their hours in the water and familiarity with the bowly waves of the Golden Mile's piers are going to put them in a strong position for a finals berth come the end of the term.

Crawford's Wade Simkiss was once again the standout in his heat, the second of the afternoon, as he managed to find room for turns where many others struggled, and his surfing, combined with that of a hot Crawford "A" team, helped to secure yet another win for last year's KZNSSL champions.

The day ended with yet another shower of sick prizes from the very generous sponsors who support the league, and kids walked off stoked and ready for the fourth round, which takes place next week, same time, same place.
