KZN Schools Surfing League kicks off with an epic match up!
By Brant Collins
The highly anticipated, annual KZN inter-school surfing league started on Friday 20 April at Dairy Beach. The league consists of the best surfing schools in the province battling it out in a tag team format for the title of best school in KZN.
This year has seen a record number of 17 teams participating. Contests are held every Friday in Durban and the latest contest drew 100 competitors, friends and family to the surfing amphitheater of dairy beach. The tag team format allows not only for individuals to express their surfing ability, but also provides a strong sense of teamwork, fun and excitement for all on the beach.
The defending champions, Crawford North Coast will be hard-pressed to defend their title of best surfing school in the province, as the level of surfing of all teams increases every year. The rivalry in the league is fierce and working within the parameters of the tag team format makes strategy and teamwork essential.
The backbone of the league is, undoubtedly, the support of the sponsors and the schools themselves. Once again this year, the sponsors have got behind youth and development and provided a large range of support in terms of providing a platform for the contest to reach a wider audience. Prizes this year have exceeded that of previous years, much to the delight of the competitors and supporters, since it is pushing the teams to perform at their best and creating an excellent vibe on the beach. Sponsors include: Skull Candy, Sanuk, Far King, Aloe Up, Sticky Bumps and 69 Slam.
This week’s prize winners each received a set of Skull Candy headphones and the runners-up received grips from Far King. Wax, sun cream and other merchandise from the sponsors was also given out on the beach to worthy competitors and supporters alike. The organisers would like to thank the BOMBsurf and all sponsors for their dedication to school surfing in the province.
