South Coast, KwaZulu Natal - Sunday 5 July will see the start of the Red Bull Unleashed junior surfing workshop. This project forms part of a strategy that Red Bull have initiated, to train and coach the top South African junior surfers, and to assist them to fulfil their respective surfing potential.
The long-term goal of this endeavour is to elevate these junior surfers onto the World Tour, and to prepare them for the rigours and demands of life as a professional surfer. There are many aspects that are to be covered during Red Bull Unleashed, including competing and fitness drills with Richard Marsh and Dan Ross from Australia, along with local coach Quinton Jones. Aspects of surfing to be covered in the training include heat strategy and psychological approach in a competition situation, amongst others. Every ride and every turn is going to be analysed and discussed by the local and international coaches and trainers, and the surfers are going to need a bit of space and freedom to be able to cut loose and impress them. In addition, there will be a talk by Spike from Wavescape on how to predict and forecast upcoming surf conditions, there will be GPS orientation, as well as live on-the-spot media interviews by media specialist Les Aupiais, for later analysis and discussion.
The surfers chosen for Red Bull Unleashed are amongst the top 18 surfers in the country between the ages of 14 and 17 years old. Sarah Baum and Bianca Buitendag will be representing the junior girls surfers. Some of the junior surfers who will be present include Mikey February, Steven Sawyer, Shaun Joubert, Brendan Gibbens and Nicky Godfrey.
The South Coast of KwaZulu Natal was chosen as the venue for Red Bull Unleashed, as there are a number of beachbreaks and point breaks that have been identified as possible venues for the more practical aspects of the training. There are plenty of options and a variety of waves that make this an exciting and interesting location.
Red Bull Unleashed has many goals and ideals, and is a modern, high-end workshop that is set to speed up the learning curve of the cream of South African junior surfers. The object of these days spent together is to show these junior surfers that a spot on the World Tour is a completely attainable goal.
