Aug 17th 2009. One of the most endearing images I have taken on a day that saw Dungeons show what she was capable of and saw one of the most perfect and picturesque days of big wave surfing SA had seen at the time.

The water angle of Skeleton Bay Namibia. Super fast current, often fogged out before the sun lights it up so getting a watershot can be tricky. One of the most incredible waves ive ever seen.

Managed to snap this off in between filming Roosta for the Surfing and Sharks movie I was doing some of the water footage for last year. The curve of the fisheye that bends the backdrop is pretty cool, gives it some nice lines.

By no means a cracker shot but one of the first water shoots I did there. I was staying in the house with the red roof on the left so it has some good memories.

I shoot with Matt a lot and he’s always keen to work for the camera even in shitty waves. The guy is complete frother! Good man!

The waves were pretty average on this day and the water clear and frigid. I walked away with a handful of nuggets from this day and this is one the more enigmatic.

Greg Long, Ian Walsh and Twig on a mystery left point we found last year somewhere up the west coast of Africa. Camping out there in freezing temps with one hell of a wind chill factor was interesesting.

I love this shot. Roosta boosting somewhere in Mozamb. The trip was pretty dismal as far as the waves were concerned, nearing the end of the trip with almost zero shots the chaps paddled out and got punished by blue bottles. Theres a definite story behind every shot.

The first surfers out here used to walk up and over the saddle on the left of the sentinel, paddle out through the channel. Ballsy. Long before the jetskis and the hype..

Jem Johnson charging hard at Sunset. Its an epic place to shoot with the mountains as a backdrop but the angle can sometimes make the waves look soft and a lot less menacing than they actually are.

Shooting down at the dune always makes for an interesting shot; morning and arvo in or out the water.

One of those abstract shots. Unidentified, no labels, no sponsors. Not surprising mags didn’t take it.

Rags Right Indo. this is one killer wave. Its in the Ments and at an angle that the swell rarely gets into. So shallow and so sharp this reef is treacherous but you’ll get a pitted here for ages. Just don’t put your feet down.

One of the beachies we found last year. Twig and Josh Redman traded barrles for hours with no one around . Pretty special that. Josh taking it all in while Twig threads his umpteenth pit of the morning

Being a surf photographer was never the plan until an injury stopped me from surfing for a few months. During that time I shot a few images with borrowed gear and managed to get a couple of them published here and over seas. After buying a water housing, the deal was sealed and I’ve been addicted ever since to chasing and capturing that perfect moment.
4 years later and I’m still very much on a steep and continuous learning curve. There are so many more  facets involved in getting that worthwhile image.- from pouring over swell charts; co-ordinating trips, getting the shot; countless hours editing, the list goes on….But for me it’s the creative processes involved in trying to capture a moment that hopefully looks original which combines the love that I have for surfing and the ocean.
Being asked whether its difficult to shoot versus surf when the waves are perfect is a common question but its not- you are there in the moment and capturing that special image in a split second (preferably from the water) is an experience you get to share with others and relive time and again and that’s an amazing thing.
