The Imana Wild Ride gives me the oppurtunity to fly in a heli for 4 days along the Transkei coast between Kei mouth and Umngazi. So there are not to many secret breaks that I don't know about.

I first met Bruce at the Thrombi X-Fest in 2005. I had planned to shoot kayakers going over the 10m Thrombi Falls on the Umzinkulu. I arrived on the mountain with too much gear. Bruce arrived and offered to help. We had to descend down a near vertical slope, cross a deep gorge section of the river, then climb a vertical rock face to the top of the Falls on the other side of the river. Carrying half of my equipment, Bruce beat me to the top of the waterfall and helped me climb up.

He's also a damn good surfer. A true waterman. RESPECT!

One of my other water passions is paddling. It has taken me to places, most people will never see. I love the freedom it gives me. If you have ever done a downwind paddle travelling at 25km/hr, you will know what I mean.

One of my favourite shots. A pure fly-by luck shot. While flying in the Transkei I shot this of a local fisherman pumping prawns in the lagoon. It makes a very abstract canvas print.

The advent of the GoPro has changed the perspective of surfing and watersport. With mounting attachments a plenty, the only limitation is your imagination.

If I see a photo I like, I try and work out how it was shot, and then try and recreate it. Sometimes the results turn out better than the original.

What do you do when you're photographing your kids in the garden and one comes into frame with tears like this. You console her of course, but not before getting a quick shot. They weren't serious tears and I did get an award for the shot.

Jon Ivins

Born 12 August 1970

I was born in Empangeni and moved to Durban before I was one. Durban has been my home for the last 42 years. I have been married to my wife, Janine, for 17 years and have twin girls, Troy & Morgan (8). I love the fact that we live close the beach. I need to be close to water.

I enjoy paddling, surfing, SUP, sailing, surfski, kayaking and basically anything were water is involved. When the NE is blowing there is nothing better than doing a downwind surfski paddle. When its offshore I will usually be surfing in some way or form.

I started of on a bodyboard at school and then was given an old Safari longboard during my tech days. I was hooked and spent a lot of time surfing snake park in the old days before upgrading to a lighter board in the early 90s. I enjoy all forms of surfing and have really enjoyed the move onto an SUP. Starting first on a 12' beast, then a 10' Fish and now an 8.6' Bilt board. I see myself as an all round waterman and have a lot of respect for the ocean.

I really enjoying playing around with my GoPro shooting stills and video. The mounting possibilities are endless. From mounting to the paddle shaft, to the front of the board.

Photographically, things were a bit fuzzy in the beginning but when I started focusing on things, I'm pretty sure it was with a camera.

First influenced by my dad who gave me my first SLR camera (Minolta) when I was about 11, my love for photography grew into a fulltime adventure. I made the transition to digital early as I loved the instant results that it produced. When I studied my NH Dip in Graphic Design (1989 - 1992), I also took photography as a subject and these two disciplines are now the core of my current business. I worked for a large independent Durban advertising and design agency for over 11 years where I gained more experience in both fields. In 2005 I went on my own. I have a small studio, but shoot on location as well. I like to keep my work varied and try not to specialise in any particular field. I like to think that this keeps my work fresh and keeps me thinking and continually solving problems.

I cannot really call myself a surf photographer, although it is something I enjoy. I enjoy shooting things that excite and inspire me, so surfing is definitely one of them.

With my work I get a lot of opportunities to fly and especially enjoy the Trankei Wild Coast.

Feeding a wild Artic Fox in Alaska, during a trip there in 2005. The trip of a lifetime.
