I am 19 years old and was born in Durban and raised on the beach. Having a father who was always involved in the world of surfing meant that I spent my life on the beachfront swimming around, body boarding and now surfing. Last year I purchased a GoPro and decided it would be cool to swim around and take photos of my friends and all the good surfers in town. The moment I hit the water and took my first photo I was hooked, I loved the fact I could capture angles only surfers got to see.
|
Since then I spend almost every day shooting in Durban and hunting for swell up and down the coast, doing my best to watch and learn from guys like Pat Flanagan, Chris van Lennep, Kelly Cestari and Lance Slabbert who really influences the way I shoot! Its guys like them that make you want to push and get new unique images. I remember my first time jumping off the pier in some serious swell and was sudden put in my place get pounded until I ended up drifting out the back to find Chris van Lennep floating around like it was 1ft south beach. He was shocked to see this liety swimming with his GoPro trying to take photos.

The first thing he said to me was stop fighting the rip and go with the flow, he then shouted to me to swim out before the sets pound me and about five minutes later I found myself washed up on North Beach…it was a hectic start to my new found passion! I slowly learnt how to get in the right position to capture the shot without getting a mouthful of fibreglass. In surf photography it’s all about timing, you spend hours swimming around fighting rips and big swell chasing surfers around to capture something that lasts less then 2 seconds. It’s lots of hard work but worth the reward when you capture a shot using a GoPro or any other surf camera. I love to shoot guys doing who do futuristic moves because it always worth the risk of getting smashed to get the shot. I also love to shoot breaking waves and surfers from underwater as it’s incredible to see what goes on underwater where we don’t see. For me it’s all about getting up close and personal! I took me a long time to get in the mix but hard work and persistence pays off.
It’s that drive to capture that perfect moment that makes people stop and admire the image. I haven’t been shooting for long and have a lot to learn but since I started I was published in the BOMB with my first epic shot of Jordy Smith and there is no greater feeling then seeing your shots in print! Since then I have been published in ZIGZAG and have also been published internationally in SURFING LIFE and can’t stop dreaming of getting the next crazy image. |
