Russian models, twitter wipe-out and the SA Masters Team gets skunked.

Who Blew Up

1. Jordy Smith.

In order to prep for his upcoming South African leg, as well as the Red Bull Nightshift demonstration coming up in Durban, Jordy headed over to Reunion with his good mates Julian Wilson to practice on some of those right-hand ramps he has excelled at before. While the images coming out are kinda restricted at this stage, and the footage has already been earmarked for a later release, here is one pic that we managed to scoop. Some pretty sick stuff going down. (he made it – we have the sequence).

2. Dion Aguis and Globe.

Any surf movie that goes to the Middle East with 10 Russian bikini models is on the right track in our eyeballs. We wonder how long before the first real surf porn movie comes along. We’ve already seen Brown Pits and Fat Lips, so that title is taken.

3.  Beyrick De Vries.

Two forehand air reverses on one wave these days is as innovative as, say, two helicopter 360’s from the 80’s. Davey Weare, hat’s off to him, was doing that air shit and winning events like half a decade ago. Time to move on kids. It’s over.

Today’s competitive results are all structured around combos and innovation. Jordy throws all sorts of shit into the mix, as does Beyrick these days. No two moves look alike. Forehand, backhand, tweaked wafts to full rotes. Good shit from the kid, despite his attitude. Watch him if you get the chance.

And Who Blew It?

  1. Twitter.

Dan Redman finally got off Twitter and went surfing

The social media site dropped out on Thursday afternoon for about 80mins and the world went into turmoil. “I looked up and realized that my wife left me 4 years ago,” and “I noticed that my bedroom was full of blood,” were some of the tweets that came thru when the system came up again, describing users’ cold turkey dramas. Prolific tweeter Dan Redman was so bored without Twitter that he went surfing for the first time in ages.

  2. Wavepools.

Allentown, circa 1985. Nothing has changed.

Media continues to harp on about the impending WavePool nirvana, with Greg Webber and Kelly Slater about to unleash man-made waves to rival Pipeline and Supers. Combined. All we have so far is 2ft WaveGarden lefts, and it seems that is all we’re going to get. Remember Allentown? In 1985 Tom Carroll beat Derek Ho at the World Inland Championships at Allentown, Pennsylvania, the first competition to be held in a wavepool. Conditions? A super-consistent two-foot swell, at a three second period for the entire event. We reckon this is what the future holds. Stay in the sea guys.

   3. Lotto.

Heather Clark will not be competing in the ISA Masters this year, along with
the rest of the team.

They have pulled funding from the SA Masters team who would have been competing in Nicaragua this year. The Masters team is one of the most successful sports team in the country, but the money is going to having huge Youth Day parties as well as for the 52 officials attending the Olympics with the 110 athletes. That’s including the ilk of assistant coaches, assistant video analysts and assistant nutritionists. We will not be represented in the contest. At the Masters level, in the last 5 years, South Africa has delivered seven world champions and two World Champion teams. That’s better than we’ve ever done in any sport bar the Rugby World Cup in 1995 and 2007. It’s a fucking tragedy happening in front of our eyes. Apparently one can get cheap wristies in Nica as well, so the men are going to really miss out.

Spot on with your assessment of Beyrick there, Jarvi, except the last bit about his 'attitude'. The Beyrick I've come to know is one of the nicest dudes around and I've seen him on at least two occasions this year hoisting his opponent up the beach after defeat. Stop living in the past where you might have bumped into the younger Beyrick, still learning to become the person he's become today. Move on.

Sure Mole, i stand to be corrected. I'll engage Beyrick next time I see him and wipe the slate clean, so to speak.

Agree Mole...Beyrick is growing up, physically and in terms of his attitude... and his surfing does a lot of the talking now whereas he used to just "talk" a lot... but a good kid and good to surf with!!

Lotto are losers! That our masters surfers have been let down in this fashion is just plain bullshit. Arguably, the "ballies" represent the cream of South African surfing and are top notch ambassadors for our country as well as being role models for the youth. To say I am disappointed for the masters team is an understatement.

Beyrick has definitely transformed from the cocky little shit, to a much more focussed and humble being. I had the pleasure of hanging with him at SA Champs for an evening, picking his brain. The lad has got his game on, and sometimes plays a different character (probably to save himself) SA's last international junior event, where the national team competed was a joke. Kids be messing around. We need more guys like Beyrick, to ensure SA continues to develop as a surfing nation.

I feel for you guys in South Africa not competing in the ISA masters in Nicaragua. Your team are highly competitive and always put on a good show. But just to let you guys know, here in Australia, we receive NO funding EVER to compete in the ISA Masters. We are all totally self funded. Our governing body here invites you to attend then gives you a uniform and the rest is up to you. If you cant afford it, we dont go. Its disgusting that the Australian Surfing Association doesnt even attempt to help our surfers get there, yet they have a new multi million dollar building and new jetskis, new computers and brand new fleet of 4wds for the staff to drive. Hope you guys can make it next year, and hope funding is available to you and one day, to us here in Australia.

Well halle-effing-lujah. It's about time BdeV attitude changed for the better. @mole, he's solely responsible for people thinking he's a doos, or was a doos! We can't smell that the once cocky little shit has changed his ways bud? Always be humble and avoid the doos tag;)

Posted by Mole on the 25/06/2012 16:12
@JHL, should people's judgement of you be solely based on the one occasion where you might have been stumbling around drunk and hitting on all the girls in the pub when you were 18 years old? Or should they rather see the person you've become?Jarvi is around a lot of these contests and would've by now seen that Beyrick has changed for the better, yet Jarvi chooses to talk about his 'attitude', making readers, like yourself, still scheme that he hasn't changed. Give the guy a break, he's human like you or I, barely 20 years-old.

Posted by Jarvi on the 25/06/2012 17:12
Hold on a sec there Mole. I have not by now seen a change in the better, otherwise I would have said so. What I did say is that I stand to be corrected and will engage with Beyrick (should he wish to) the next time I see him. So yes, I am admitting I could be totally wrong in my assessment, but I haven't witnessed the change first hand, just to set the record straight. His surfing, on the other hand, I have witnessed, and it's red-hot right now.

Posted by Mole on the 25/06/2012 19:34
@Jarvi, I guess the point I am trying to get to is that his 'attitude' didn't need to be mentioned at all, as it makes no difference to whether he is 'blowing up' right now or not - so why mention it? Leave the personal opinions about someone's attitude out of it, because truthfully who are any of us to judge? Are you his psychiatrist? Or dare I say it, God?

@ anyone who really gives a shit. These are the BMT awards for f@#K sakes. Spawned by Dooma as a Lewis Samuels rip off, in a good moment we found ourselves saddled with the bastion of taking the piss. From day one we've been politically incorrect, burned our mates (taken some heat ourselves), but tried to keep things interesting in the process. if you take this shit seriously you need counselling. Sit back, crack a cold one and enjoy. If anyone is the master at this shit it is Jarvi, so quiet now and just let the man do his work. And seriously if you are in his neighbourhood be really quiet because from what i can gather the dude isn't getting much sleep at the mo...

Posted by John McCarthy on the 25/06/2012 21:24
Oh ja last word on the subject, anyone who can 'out comment' Jarvi on the BMT gets a bottle of Jack Daniels from me personally, but if you crash and burn you gotta buy Jarvi a bottle of that toxic rum that he drinks by way of apology and yes Beyrick surfs pretty good .... for a hairdresser!

Posted by Gary on the 26/06/2012 19:06
Speechless about the master's story, are our opens going to world's,I don't think Casey Grant was awarded his colours when he won the open title this year, like in previous years, sad

and not all of it. I like super sharp images so ulenss it's really late, I rarely go above ISO 200 and I shoot with ISO 100 as far as possible. Usually I wind up ditching anything taken on an ISO higher than 400. Mostly I go for the widest possible aperture with the fastest possible shutter speed. Usually that ranges between 1/500 and 1/3200 depending on the light. Mostly I shoot with the camera on fully manual, otherwise, I aim for shutter speed priority rather than aperture priority. If you're shooting from the beach, the biggest killer is the answer to the following question: where is the sun coming from?

I loved Portugal. I desperately want to go back. Research on it, find out what you want to do. English isn't speokn quite as widly as it is in other European countries. In the south the Algarve area they know more English there as it is more touristy. You *could* go on a tour, but I think you would miss out on half the fun of discovery. Eating out was fun, because we usually couldn't read the menu so our meals were always random (and the food was so good). They don't have street signs or anything like that, so if you were thinking about driving just keep that in mind. I hear train travel is quite affordable. As for things to do Porto was great. I did the Sandeman tour and port tasting. Not far outside of Lisbon is Sintra which has a fantastic castle that is a must see. The south has very pretty coastline.

At the end of the day a W is a W. Not every game will be a denver style beat down, if you play like shit at least win, Team won thats all that cnotus. I think as packer fans we're used to such amazing play that when its okay we're not satisfied. The team needs some heat on them in order to produce (see saints and falcons games) if the other team bring nothing there is no fire in the packers.
