Playmate wardrobe malfunctions, high speed car chases, cooking surf...

Who Blew Up

1. Davey Van Zyle.

This kid rips. In fact now that we come to think about it he’s not much of a kid anymore and his surfing has matured in leaps and bounds along with his lanky frame. In a recent session on the far northern KZN Zululand Coast, Davey stepped up to the plate with some full rail turns and deep, long tubes showing what a standout surfer he can be. The cool thing is he is such a humble and polite guy who lets his surfing do the talking. You won’t have to just take our word for it as he features prominently in an upcoming BOMBsurf video production featuring a bunch of KZN surfers getting solidly shacked at a fresh and fickle Zululand sand spit.

2. Kate Lovemore.

How many Playmates do you know that surf? Anyway Kate is always game and recently while doing some video coaching with Twig behind the lens had a small but fairly common ‘wardrobe malfunction’ for girls with big boobs surfing in itsy bitsy bikini’s... Instead of chucking the footage they wisely entered it into the Oakley 1WW and the video has since gone viral and been picked up by surfing sites all over the world. In a week when everyone’s attention was focussed around a fat, bald, old man’s penis, Kate’s boobs were just what we needed to restore some feminine karmic equilibrium to our phallically obsessed world. We urge all our subscribers to vote for this video as a matter of principle ;)

3.  Casey Grant, Nikita Robb, Heidi Palmboom, Mikey February and Western Province.

These guys all emerged victorious at this year’s SA Champs which wrapped in fun, clean conditions at Misty Cliffs in Cape Town on Sunday. Nice work! An interesting fact is that Western Province retained their unbeaten record on home turf, well done to all concerned.

And Who Blew It?

  1. The City of Durban engineers who built the Bay, North and New Piers.

This is a local South African production about how surfing provided an outlet to some young kids stuck in a township on the outskirts of Durban in the heyday of the Inkatha/ANC conflicts that characterised the life and times of the late 80’s. It is well produced and features some great acting. Special mention must go to Quinton Shabalala for the amazing surf double work he did. Go check it out if you haven’t already! www.thebombsurf.com/blog/7/258/burn-baby-burn

  2. Rudy Palmboom SNR.

Rudy is a fixture at Cave Rock and Ansteys when it fires and is always to be found taking off deepest and steepest with an uncanny knack of getting himself into and out of the biggest and best tubes of the day. Last week while the Bluff turned on for a few hours in a beautifully groomed long period swell Rudy proved that he is after all human when he got crunched by a monster and ended up breaking his board.

   3.  A certain surf magazine editor whose first name rhymes with Bomb.

He narrowly avoided being arrested for speeding on the N2 last week. The worst part of it was that he was forced to watch perfect A-Frames spitting both ways from the side of the road while the traffic cops read him the riot act and threw the book at him. Now he has to the public prosecutor to ask for leniency. We’re not sure how far he’s going to get with his “but your honour it was cooking!” speech...
