As we bring the year to a close with the ultimate version of the BMT for 2011 there can realistically be only one man you sits atop these rankings and that is the evergreen Kelly Slater. His performances this year have kept us entertained and inspired and his 11th World Title is a serious sporting achievement regardless of the fact that surfing is a so called fringe sport.
The BMT required to come back again and again and again, the ability to constantly up his game and re-invent himself is a lesson and inspiration to us all! Respect to The King!
2. Carissa Moore.
What a performance this year from the young Hawaiian! She wrapped up her World Title in record time with 3 World Tour victories and then proceeded to give the men in the Sunset event a scare as an invited Wild Card.
Perhaps the most awesome thing about Carissa is that she just rips. If you were watching her surf from a far, you’d be like “who is that guy, he rips!” She doesn’t just surf better than most men but proves that the woman can surf aswell or better than men if they put their minds to it.
3. Travis Logie.
Our man in the trenches, our man who never, ever, ever gives up! What a year for Travis as we’ve watched him throw himself mind body and soul (literally sometimes) into re-qualifying for the 2012 Tour.
There is not a competitor in the top 32 who don’t recognise and respect Travis’s ferocious competitive streak and it’s bloody good that they don’t because he can strike hard anyplace and anytime. Bring on 2012 for Travis!
And Who Blew It?
1. Bobby Martinez.
What a monumental waste of talent, effort and opportunity. Surely one of the more dynamic Goofy Foots to be on the world stage recently, all gone in a single rant which it seems was a thinly disguised marketing ploy for his new sponsor. I wonder how his tennis career is doing.
2. Brodie Carr.
Right man, wrong place, wrong time. Brodie’s resignation this year in the wake of the Slater premature World Title crowning debacle was a bitter sweet happening for surfing. Brodie did a lot of good for pro surfing and we must not forget that. That said he did restore both dignity and gravitas to Slater’s 11th Word Title through his resignation by recognising that the The World Title is the pivotal moment to the tour.
3. All you suckers who,
A) chose to holiday away from the coast this holiday season.
B) Didn’t tie your boards to the roof correctly when leaving for your holiday destination.
C) Missed the dawnie because you are too hungover from the plethora of celebrations which overtake us at this time of year.

I think that what she had to say is very true. If we cniontue to think of her past as part of Destiny's Child then we will not give her room to grow as an artist. I personally feel that anyone that does a cover or takes pictures like that are being on the edge. In her case I think she may be trying to prove a point and she has changed her image in the process... For the better or worse is now the question.

Heroes, villains, smack downs and duct tape

Who Blew Up
1. Kieran Perrow.
If there was ever a case of the blue collar Aussie dingo coming good it has to be Kieran Perrow’s performance at Pipeline this week. At the start of the week Kieran was staring at the harsh reality of relegation from the top 32 and not making the cut. By the end of the week he was standing atop the Billabong Pipe Masters podium with the special Lopez winners trophy in hand, the prize purse in his back pocket and ranked 19th on the One World Rankings thereby ensuring that he will start next year’s elite tour at Snapper. In some of the most hectic surf in recent years for a Pipe Masters Perrow put his body on the line and charged like a wild man.
By the time he paddled out in the finals he looked like he was held together with duct tap he was so strapped up from his frequent encounters with the reef. As he jets home to Aussie and no doubt takes a few days to let his body heal he will bask in the knowledge that he has joined an elite group of surfers who are ‘Pipe Masters’. How about that for your maiden World Tour victory when starting the week facing relegation? As Kelly Slater said from the commentary booth at the end of the contest, “it’s a storybook ending”.
2. John Florence.
What a performance from the young Hawaiian this week at Pipeline, inspiring to say the least. If you haven’t watched how he surfs Pipe do yourself a favour and go and watch the heats on demand. He displays an affinity for Pipe that while it is not surprising is sensational to watch.
He raised the bar significantly at this event and in the process also accumulated enough points to take out the Triple Crown which it must be said almost seems like his birthright. Anyway it is now official, his name is in the record books and he becomes the youngest winner of the Triple Crown ever with many more dangerous competitive years to come.
3. Travis Logie.

For sheer guts determination and competitive spirit we have to salute Travis who has fought some titanic battles this year often against hectic odds in order to requalify for next years tour. He ends up ranked 31 on the One World rankings and squeaks in to prolong his career at the elite end of our sports competitive platforms. Go Travis!
An honourable mention must go to Kelly Cestari who swam all three days at The Pipe Masters to bring us back the pics. No small feat if you consider the size of the surf especially on days one and two. Nice work KC!

And Who Blew It?
1. Kelly Slater.
Losing to Joel after overcoming a rampant John-John has got to sting the king. Slater was so awed by John-John’s performance that he forgot how dangerous Parko can be when he is lurking in the shadows like a villain intent on some robbery.
That is exactly what Joel did to Kelly, he came out of the shadows and robbed him in broad daylight just after Kelly thought he’d slayed the John-John dragon. Wouldn’t it be nice to see more of Parko in this sort of form next year, it would certainly spice things up.
2. Joel Parkinson.
Desperate for a win in the Pipe Masters Joel (who surfed brilliantly when he got the waves) succumbed to an in form Perrow who had the force of the universe behind him. So ended another year that Parko would probably rather forget as he ends up number 2 in the rankings and the bridesmaid to Slater.... again despite beating him in the semis.
3. Michel Bourez.
The hard charging Tahitian was in the running for the Triple Crown Title, he just had to make one more heat into the finals and the title was his. Unfortunately for him he was stopped in his tracks by a rampant Perrow, thereby leaving John-John with enough cumulative points to take the prestigious title instead.

not sure we can say Slater, PArko and Michel really blew it - all of them put up amazing fights this weekend and it was more about the waves.. I'd almost say John John Blew it by giving Slater back priority is the dying 3 minutes - Rookie error, would have like to see him in the final..

Ricky-Bobby and Sarah Baum lay down the law, while the Dirty Uncle crashes and burns
04/12/2011
Who Blew Up
1. Hot Rod
Just when we thought the Dirty Dirty Uncle was about to take a patent out on Movember along came Hot Rod to reinstall a little humility. And boy did he do it with style, speed stipes on his chest and all! Congratulations to Hot Rod who walks away with a serious arm full of prizes for taking out this year’s win. For all the judges commentary and the transparent scoring on Movember click here.
2. Ricky Basnett and Sarah Baum.

These two well known rippers demolished their competition at the Guido’s event in Port Alfred this weekend. Ricky gleefully re-donning the contest jersey to school everyone in sight and Sarah surfed out of her boots to take out the womens win. According to event organiser Dave Fish it was the perfect summer contest. “Contestable waves, great jols and some amazing surfing... and Sarah surfed better than a lot of the guys in the the men’s event!
3. John-John Florence
Sheow bra, into the lead on the Triple Crown rankings heading into Pipe (where he’s already won twice this year), courtesy of his victory at Sunset. This puts an interesting spin on things because now he has real incentive to make life difficult for Kelly and Joel in The Pipe Masters
And Who Blew It?
1. Alan Riou.
Despite the fact that the surfer he lost to at Sunset is one of the most talented surfers ever to grace this planet’s shores he still lost to a girl! Carissa would beat a lot more guys on tour given the chance, but unfortunately for Alan this defeat is going to be a difficult one to bury! All that French Euro Macho shit gobbled up in one heat at Sunset with by the diminutive and impish Women’s World surfing champion. Unless he can pull off an ‘Andy’. Like when he lost to Keala Kenelly in his youth Alan is going to be spending some time on his shrink’s couch for sure!
2. All the girls who didn’t rock up to the Guido’s event in Port Alfred this weekend.
Girls. Images by Luke Patterson
The girls often complain that there are not enough events for them on the local tour, so when someone goes to the trouble of including a women’s event and only 4 chicks rock up you only have yourselves to blame.
3. The Dirty Uncle.
After dominating last year’s event so completely the Dirty Uncle left himself wide open to be taken out by the likes of Hot Rod. He played his trump card (in all it’s porno finery) a week too early and he didn’t adapt and keep up with the game. In the end he was out foxed and out played by the newcomer with speed stripes on his chest. Will The Dirty Uncle recover from this or will this spell the end of his domination of the facial hair sweep stakes. Only time will tell, stay tuned for next year.

Jeez, although small waves at the GUIDOS SA OPEN in Port Alfred, the ou's ripped and Ricky Bobby took the win over Dan Redman, who goes so vert, evergreen Monkey who also shredded, and Greg Emslie who was unlucky that no big waves came through - he sat too deep... But hey, fun event, 2 nights at Guido's rocked and now the local girls are all satisfied after the invasion of surf punks! Oh and Sarah Baum does rip properly ! Those girls that surfed the comp know how to jol also !
