As we wrap up 2011 and reflect on the year, one thinks about the remarkable surfing achievements, the drama and the innovation that we saw. A lot of people will remember 2011 as the year the ASP took surfing back to the Big Cities, the year Slater won his 11th World Title or the year Bobby lost the plot. We believe it will best be remembered as the Year of The Rising Stars. Owen, Julian, Kolohe and Gabriel in particular.
No sooner is the 2011 World Tour done and dusted, and we shift our eyes to Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast for the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro presented by Land Rover which will be held from 25th February to 7th March to start the 2012 ASP Men’s and Women’s World Tour.
This is, of course, not to discount everybody's OTHER favourite surfers - Jordy, Kelly, Joel, Mick, Taj and the rest of the old guard, who, as Slater continues to prove - are the definitive match ups that shape the unfolding drama on the WT.
The Roxy Pro also opens an incredibly exciting Women’s World Tour with defending World Champion Carissa Moore facing an enormous challenge from all sides including four-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore, World No.2 Sally Fitzgibbons and World No.4 Tyler Wright (AUS).
So...who's your money on?

"Having positive roles models can get you out of shit sometimes"
11/12/2011
They're standing at the bottom of the cinema, microphone in hand, about to answer questions from the Durban audience at the South African premiere of their global film tour for "Fighting Fear" - They are director, producer and driving force of the filmamking process, Macario De Souza, who's previous film "Bra Boys" was a global hit with surf fraternity. Next to him, his two best friends: the towering figure of infamous big wave surfer Mark Mathews, who's name is synonymous with charging massive Shipsterns, and Richie Vaculik, hard charging surfer and recent-MMA World Title contender.
"Following Bra Boys, We wanted to make a film that focused more on the personal relationships rather than the dramatic circumstances" says Macario. "A lot of people took the Bra Boys message the wrong way, so this time around, we wanted to show that having positive roles models can get you out of shit sometimes"
Macario De Souza (Director) Mark Mathews, Ritchie Vaculik, Paul Canning (O'Neill SA)
The film itself, narrated by Joel Edgerton, takes you through the lives of the young tearaways from Maroubra. Ritchie and Mark - bonded together by a love for surfing, and a mutual support for each other as both their parents split up around the same time. The spirit of the Bra Boys is also a compelling factor as the youngsters push the boundaries in and out of the water always trying to impress the older guys.
The film is made up of mostly of real-life footage from Ritchie and Mark's exploits as Mark chases swells around the world, and Ritchie finds himself on the fast track to a competitive MMA career. This is interspersed with interviews from friends, family, love interests and fellow professional surfers and fighters. Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, BJ Penn and Bruce Irons all contribute in this area which gives an interesting insight into the respect that Mark and Ritchie have garnered from the best athletes in their respective fields. The family interviews are honest and compelling, especially as both our protagonists find themselves facing life-altering circumstances - like jail-time and hospitalisation.
Both Mark and Ritchie face potential jail sentences for various violent misdemeanors, and both suffer serious injury threats which almost kill them on various occasions. The point of the film though is to ultimately show how the unwavering friendship and support between Mark and Ritchie, get them through their personal setbacks as well as help them overcome the obstacles in their professional paths.
Fighting Fear is an emotionally engaging film, that literally takes you into the double-stepped mutant that is Shipsterns, into the Octagon of a Word Title MMA fight and into the hearts and lives of two best mates overcoming the odds to achieve their dreams.
If you're up for a beautifully shot, adrenaline soaked journey, and you enjoyed Bra Boys, you must check out this film.

It's always summer on the Inside
10/12/2011
The maverick, the pioneer, the legendary man behind the wetsuit and first surf shop, Jack O’Neill, celebrates 60 years of pioneering a revolutionary brand that changed the surf industry forever. O’Neill will be releasing a biographical coffee table book following the journey of the man whose passion drove him to create an innovative suit that allowed surfers to be the first in the icy waters of the San Francisco Bay and the last out.
The 256-page, hardcover book written by Drew Kampion and published by Chronicle Books will be released on oneilleshop.com and other selected retail shops starting October 1st. A portion of sales will go to Jack’s own non-profit environmental education program, O’Neill Sea Odyssey.
In 1952, Jack O’Neill opened the doors to the world’s first surf shop offering wetsuits, surfboards, surf wax, travel bags, and more. Originally located in his garage, the successful O’Neill shop was relocated from his home, to San Francisco where the business began to boom, to finally Santa Cruz simply because according to Jack, “it had the best waves in California.” The O’Neill Surf Shop is still located at 41st Avenue in Santa Cruz, California.
Although Jack O’Neill has been numerously named the original surf industry innovator and entrepreneur, he does not remotely consider himself a businessman at all. “I’m just a surfer who wanted to build something that would allow me to surf longer,” says O’Neill. “By having the surf shop and inventing the wetsuit, it was my job to test out my products. I loved my job. My job was to surf.”
In the 1950s, the idea of being paid to surf was not an option. Currently, surfing is part of a $6.24 billion industry, according to a third party research conducted by the Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA). Starting as a garage-based surf shop and wetsuit brand, O’Neill has evolved to dominate not only with their products but also by sponsoring the world’s best riders in surfing, snowboarding and wakeboarding. O’Neill’s roster of athletes include some of the world’s biggest phenoms in their respective sports including surfers, Jordy Smith, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World title contender and defending champion, 18 year old surfing wonder, John John Florence, and Malia Manuel, the youngest contestant to ever win the US Open of Surfing; Other action sport marvels include Snowboarder and X-Game Gold Medal Sebastien Toutant and wakeboarding legend Scott Byerly. O’Neill has also put their stamp on the fashion industry, with their women’s line and have partnered with supermodel, Elyse Taylor, as the global face and ambassador of the brand through 2012.
Jack O’Neill began with a vision to create an innovative suit and unknowingly he spawned an entire industry. Today, O’Neill is sold in more than 47 countries and is the number one wetsuit brand in the world. The brand is currently carried in core shops, department stores, and other mass retailers world-wide and is known for high-quality goods for men, women and children.
“O’Neill has a 60 year history of developing the industry’s best products," says Pat O’Neill son of Jack and CEO of O’Neill Wetsuits, “the brand was founded on Jack’s passion to be the ‘first in the water’ and we infuse this belief into each product we produce.”
O’Neill continues their heritage as an innovative brand by introducing revolutionary products to the industry such as the Psychofreak, containing XDS technology making the O’Neill wetsuit the warmest and most flexible in the market; the Hyperfreak boardshort, the first multi-stretch, fast drying boardshort made with hyperstretch fabric; and the revolutionary Superkini, the bikini designed with NANOFRONT™ technology, making the Superkini the first to have 200% more grip.
“It was Jack O’Neill’s persistence, vision, and innovation that inspired an industry that has spread globally. It is an honor to be able to tell the story of a man’s journey to perfect a pastime that was once not as celebrated as it is today,” says author Drew Kampion.
Kampion has been a long time veteran of the surf industry serving not only as an author, but as a former editor of Surfer and Surfing magazine and has first handedly experienced the growth and expansion of O’Neill as previously holding the post of advertising director.
“Surfing has been forever evolving since the creation of the wetsuit. Kids now are doing things I would never imagine,” says Jack. Some of the most respected surfers and ocean-oriented icons, including Bruce Brown, Shaun Tomson, Robby Naish, Tom Curren, Fred Van Dyke, Ken “Skindog” Collins, and Jordy Smith help tell the story of “Jack O’Neill, It’s Always Summer on the Inside” by illustrating the appreciation and awe of the passion of one man’s vision to step up the game of surfing.
The book will serve as the kick off to O’Neill’s 60th anniversary.
"It's always summer on the inside" - The Jack O'Neill book is exclusively available in South Africa for R249 from the O'Neill Concept Store in Gateway, Durban.
The 5 winners of the Jack O'Neill book giveaway are: Robin Olivier, Siegmund, Shane Pratt, Doug Escreet and Mike Van Heerden. Congratulations, your books are on their way to you! (19/12/2011)

Sneakerlust and Skull bling
07/12/2011
I was in Europe earlier this year and one the things on my list was a pair of black hi-tops. I shopped quite a bit for them and didn't find exactly what I wanted, especially when forking out in Euros, so I didn't get anything in the shoe department. So I was pleasantly surprised to come home and a few months later to find these. It's a really awesome limited edition collection from DC in collaboration with Skullcandy.
The DC Spartan Hi-top sneakers are at the top end of the DC fashion collection, are functional and super comfy and come with a pair of the famous Skullcandy smokin buds as part of the packaging. The smokin buds come in a nifty little round soft-case and the wiring is cleverly encased in a DC shoelace.
- and I'm a fan of the DC brand too, having a few pairs in the closet already, so I was double stoked. I've worn this pair flat out since getting them - from post surf cruising around town, to the jol and and I'm a huge fan.
The thing I love about this collection though is the attention to detail in the make up of the shoe. The collaborative design sports the DC and Skullcandy logos embroidered in with a fine gold thread - so it's finished elegantly and is subtle enough to be cool, but is definitely gonna catch the eye.
The Skullcandy smokin-buds are also very cool. I've got a pair of Skullcandy fix-in ear buds already which I use when I'm editing clips and listening to my ipod on the go. These smokin buds are super comfy in the ear and produce great sound quiality, so it's an awesome value add to go with the Hi-tops.
Two of the coolest brand teaming up together to do something like this is a win in my book. This limited edition collection is gonna sell out fast - but we have secured a special limited number available for BOMBsurf fans in various sizes in theBOMBsurf Online Store - so if you have sneaker-lust and don't want to miss out - click here and purchase a pair now.
All images and review by Iain.
theBOMBsurf is giving away one pair of these DC Spartan Hi-tops with the Skullcandy Smokin buds - it's a UK size 9 up for grabs, so if you want to win 'em - enter below. Winner will be announced on Thursday 15th December 2011.
And the winner is: Cameron Doubell from Cape Town. (19/12/2011).
