Bloodscan

22/02/2012
I was in JBay a few weeks ago and came across this flyer:

The first thing that I thought was "What an awesome name for an event - I can't believe no-ones used that before! " and my second thought was "Hmmm, that's an interesting title sponsor - I wonder what Bloodscan is?"

So I decided to go and find out:

Bloodscan have become involved in Surfing by sponsoring the BloodScan Africa Surf Series 2011 and also supports Junior EP surfers Emma Smith and Steven Sawyer.

“We picked surfing,” says BloodScan Africa Surf Series 2011 and BLOODSCAN EUROPE Managing Director Lewis Khoury, “because it’s an outdoors, health and wellness orientated activity that’s easily accessible to anyone living on the coast. It has low cost barriers to entry, all kids need is a surfboard and they are able to adopt a lifestyle that yields significant health and opportunities benefits.

Next time you're in JBay, go and check it out and be sure not to miss the action at The Jeffreys Bay Surf Challenge on 28th April.

Wave Wizards Wrap

07/02/2012

Saturday the 4th of Febraury saw the season ending Wave Wizards surf series contest take place on Umhlanga’s Bronze beach. Although a ‘buster’ wind came out of the south west in the afternoon, for most of the day the surfers and spectators were blessed with idyllic weather conditions.

The points of the event were tallied up directly after the last heat was surfed but competitors were left in suspense until all was revealed at the pirates and princesses themed awards evening which was held at the Umhlanga Ski boat club later in the evening. Bygaining a finals birth in Saturdays competition, Umhlanga’s own Kyle Lane managed to snatch the series title away from Umdloti local Dan Redman, who won the final contest. In the masters division Evan Jenkins got the better of Umhlanga lifeguard James Elliott while the Bad Ballies/Vets division saw Eugene Ciaglia manage a comfortable series win over Andy Hogg.

Rising star Shane Sykes proved to be a force to be reckoned with when he came out tops in both the u/14 and u/18 boys divisions.

The gommets divisions were won by Saxton Randall in the u/10 and Calvin Goor in the u/12’s

Ladies surfing has come a long way over the past few years and the girls put on a great performance on Saturday. Westbrook’s Tam de Maroussem took out the Openseries ahead of Tatum Ambrose but a special mention must be made to the winner of the clubs most potential award and u/16 title, Teal Hogg who, surfing outside of her division managed the final contest win and a 3rd in the overall standings.

Jade Story was the runner up to Teal in the u/16’s while La lucia’s Kelly Medly took out the u/12’s with Sophie Bell in 2nd.

Committed club sponsors Hurricane Surf Co and Hurley supplied great prizes and were helped once again by Lundun eyewear, Monster energy drinks, Bar-Ba-Coa, Wavehouse and CI surfboards.

The Club’s AGM will be held this Thursday the 9th of Feb at Europa in Umhlanga Rocks. Those interested in attending are to please contact club chairman JestynViljoen via e-mail on jestyn@hurricanesurf.net

    Lou Reed & Metallica

    29/01/2012
Every proper surf-roadtrip has a definitive anthem. There have been 2 in the history of theBOMBsurf that really stick out for me. The one trip was Ben Harper & the Relentless 7 - after which we named a feature in the magazine "Shimmer and Shine" and the other was around the middle of 2009 - Billabong Pro time - and the album was Metallica's "Death Magnetic".  John and I simply loved that album - and we blasted it wherever we went. Loudly.

When I heard that Metallica were doing a collaborative album with 70 year old Lou Reed, I was naturally curious. For those of you who don't know Lou Reed - he was the guy from the 70's band Velvet Underground, but he enjoyed more success on his own with songs like "Walk on the Wild Side".

The album is called "LULU" and it is inspired by the German expressionist writer Frank Wedekind’s plays Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box, which tell the story of a young abused dancer’s life and relationships, and are now collectively known as the Lulu plays.

Originally the lyrics and musical landscape for Lulu were sketched out by Lou for a theatrical production in Berlin. After Lou performed with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concerts in New York in 2009 they decided to make more music together. The Lulu project began in May 2011 at HQ studios in Northern California, with Lou’s lyrics as the starting point.

The Album is available from Look and Listen for Download for R111.00 or if you're a die hard fan, enter the competition and win one of 3 albums exclusively from theBOMBsurf and Universal Music.

This competition is now closed:  The Winners have been notified and sent their CDs. Thanks for entering!

ALL WELCOME!

For any queries please call Jestyn on 079 500 3945

    Make every second count

    20/01/2012
"How much?" I asked the guys in the shop. "And can I surf with it?" They looked at me with a tilt of the head,  and while they listened to my predicament, strapped it to my wrist and swiftly explained the functions.

"It's digital and analogue. It has a stopwatch. It has a timer. It has a second time-zone in case you travel overseas. It's bloody tough and water resistant. Anything else you need? "

"Um...diving" I stammered. Trying not to look foolish.

"It's got a stainless steel case back and case protector, a salt water resistant Polyurethane strap and will easily survive diving to 100 metres. You'd do well to break it chum"

"What if do?" I tested, as I sidled backward from the big guy.

"It's got a 12 month straight swap guarantee. If anything happens in the 1st year of ownership you simply send the watch and the slip back and get a brand new one for free"  he replied.

The exchange done, and I went straight for a surf.

You see, If you're like me, and you always wear a watch - no matter what - then you'll know that helpless, naked feeling that envelops you when you don't have one on. I HAVE to have a watch on -  to tell the time, the date, what day of the week it is and timing my cross-training runs. If I don't have a watch on I feel anxious and lost. Especially when I'm surfing the dawnie and I know I have a meeting to get to.

The other day my regular tide watch went in for repairs. They told me it would have to go back to the manufacturers and would take up to 3 weeks to fix. I started to panic. Besides my dress watches and a few perished non-functional surf watches from my youth, I was watch-less. It just so happened that later that day when pulling into the Surf HQ down at the beachfront, I saw this little fella:

The relief and the waves washing over me simultaneously. I was amazed at how  weightless this watch is. So light in fact, that I hardly realised it was on. But as I habitually glanced at my wrist, there it was - ticking and blinking back at me.

I wore it for 3 weeks and it never came off my wrist. Sure, it's not an onboard computer - but it doesn't pretend to be. It tells the time, it's light, comfy, tough and at R399 - almost everyone can afford one.

My original tide watch came back the other day. Truth be told it sat in the packaging for another week before it saw daylight. Now I'm spoilt for choice. If I'm running or dirtbiking, then this is the watch I use...and lately I've noticed, glancing at my watch out at backline, trying to see how many more waves I can squeeze before heading in...I'm sometimes surprised to see this little fella twinkling back at me.

You ralely make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be ralely something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

That is the peoprr weblog for anyone who needs to find out about this topic. You notice a lot its virtually laborious to argue with you (not that I actually would need?HaHa). You positively put a brand new spin on a topic thats been written about for years. Great stuff, just great!
