I have noticed that most of the posts pelope make that get the most comments are usually nothing all that thought-provoking (though this isn't always the case, of course). I guess I just like getting feedback, having discussion, that sort of thing. Of course, that's also the reason why I run , so I guess I have no room to complain.'

Do I have to Transfer my Arizona CDL to California? I've been offered a job in california, but i live in arizona and i am NOT planning to move, just work and come http://www.dmv4sure.com/georgia-cdl.htm back. My CDL (Commercial Driver License) is an http://www.dmv4sure.com/hawaii-cdl.htm Arizona CDL with all the endorsments gotten here. I've known that the CDL has to be from the state you reside in, so it wouldnt be a problem to work at california and have an arizona CDL, would it?.

Posted by Addison on the 24/04/2013 19:51
No as long as your home of record is still Arizona you won't have to get your license transfered. I live in Tennessee and work out of North Carolina and still have my CDL in TN. http://www.dmv4sure.com/idaho-cdl.htm What is the http://www.dmv4sure.com/illinois-cdl.htm process to obtaining a CDL in the state of Illinois?

They don't even pretend to be a surf brand, but they make some seriously cool boardshorts.

Guests enjoying the chic vibe in the store
Vilebrequin store opening by Ross Lindsay

A red carpet, exotic cocktails, glamorous guests mingling with invited media. No, I was not at the Oscars, I was attending the opening of a new beach and swimwear boutique at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town.  Vilebrequin, an international luxury fashion brand of men’s only beach and swimwear, opened its doors with panache.   On entering the modest size shop, I was confronted with a clean, chic store that felt like I could have been back in New York or any of the big fashion capitals of the world -  Milan, Paris, Rome etc.  The store is stocked with a large selection of  their infamous men’s wear and swim trunks.   These are not your average “baggies”, that’s for sure.  Each pair of Vilebrequin swim trunks starts off in the hands of a fabric maker who uses  a 100 percent Polyamide energized fabric.  This unique fabric is made exclusively for the Vilebrequin brand.  Clean shelves display the merchandise of colourful and rich  prints made from the luxurious soft fabric which is printed exclusively in Italy.

Owner, Brett Temple, said they are very excited about bringing this international brand to South Africa and felt that the market was ready to embrace something special. The logical place to start was at the V& A in Cape Town where he also has another boutique store next door.  This enables them to be hands on with launching the new venture.   He is also looking at expanding to Knysna in the near future too.

Located  at shop no 6230 in the V & A shopping centre, you will find the Vilebrequin store on the eastern side of the complex, just upstairs from Willoughby’s on the passage toward the Table Bay hotel.

We're thinking about comnig down for New Year's from Virginia. I've surf St Augustine before but will be flying down without my longboard. Do you rent any longboards? I'd prefer something that's not a Bic, NSP, or similar beginner board. By the way, great site, I check it often. Really good videos! Thanks.

Hi, there!Being a newbie to sunrifg, I struggled to find the right way to balance myself on the board… Then one day my boyfriend bought one of these training devices to improve his riding/walking skills. He had NOHO attached to a long board, sitting on a concrete floor of the basement. The first time I tried it, I couldn’t even make more than two steps. It was hard to learn to balance my body on unstable surface that resembled movement of the water under your board. Step by step, I got myself situated. It definitely improved my balance (I am clumsy) and gave me better understanding of where and how I need to be on the board. It’s a great training device that is good for all levels – those that are advanced like my boyfriend can work on improving their technique, and those that are still learning like I am, can practice on this board while away from water. It does work your legs, so it’s a good work out, as well.I agree with the post above – it is easier to have a spare board, but it doesn’t take too long to get it on or off. Also, I think the water effect is much stronger if you have it on hard floor such as concrete. Overall I think it’s a fun device to have: you can use it when you can’t get to the beach; it definitely improves your skills and technique; and it is a good work up for the lower body.

theyre called srofbrauds but the standing on them and rowing them, its called paddle boarding. I dont think they have specific boards for doing it but you can just go to a surf shop n find a board that you think is long n wide enough for you n go paddle boarding.

"I kinda believe it was my guardian angel."

Elke on her trusty 9'2" ©  René Bekker
On Saturday Morning local J-Bay surfer Elke Schoeman had a remarkable experience when a small humpback dolphin that was swimming right next to her was attacked by a shark. She was surfing The Point In J-Bay as she does most days and was actually on her way in when the attack occurred in shallow water in front of the bottom car park.

“It was cold, but a beautiful and calm day. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a small Humpback dolphin swimming right next to me. I was delaying my exit from the water enjoying the experience with the dolphin as us surfers do. Suddenly there was this swirl of sand and so much movement in and out of the water, then an explosion of blood. I thought to myself, shew is this not a shark attacking the dolphin? I climbed over the rocks instead of going in the gully and my legs felt like jelly when I got to the beach. I felt sorry for the little dolphin as I dunno what would have happened if it hadn’t been there, I kinda believe it was my guardian angel.”

While most people would have been afraid to go back in the water Elke was back out there first thing on Monday morning on her trusty old 9’2” epoxy longboard.

“I always sit wide to catch those long runners that peel all the way to the car park. I was fine surfing, it was just when I went in over that spot again that I felt a bit anxious. It will probably take me a while before that feeling goes away.”

Countdown to Surf Emporium WP Interschools Championship.

20/09/2012
Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship and Battle of the Wave Surf Session

Surfing’s appeal is widely publicized and regarded as one of the World’s most rapidly growing sports. What has not been so widely recognised or indeed used is Surfing’s huge potential as an educational tool and a vehicle for effecting change. On the weekend of the 29th and 30th September 2012, Surf Emporium, encompassing the highly acclaimed Roxy Surf School and Surf with Quiksilver Programme, in association with Surfing South Africa and Lotto are running the Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship and Battle of the Wave Surf Session.

The contest forms part of the exciting 5th edition of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival taking place at Surfers Corner in Muizenberg. The BOS Earthwave Beach Festival is the official Guinness World Record attempt for the Most Surfers on a single Wave. Surf Emporium, founded by six times South African Surfing Champion Roxy Davis, is also celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012 with a highlight being the re-launch of their new beach front store and surf school located in the Empire Building, Surfers Corner Muizenberg.

The Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship has twenty Schools from across South Africa participating in the event. An exciting inclusion in this year’s event is the Waves for Change Surf Team from Masiphumelele Cape Town and the Umthombo Street Children Surf Team from Durban.

Waves for Change is a long-term intervention for at-risk ocean side communities. The intervention aims to empower participants to become leading advocates and role models to their peers and to effect a profound change in the way young adults perceive HIV, Stigma and the issue of safe sex. Through its coach training, Waves for Change aims to train a new generation of community leaders to address social issues endemic to South African township life.

Umthombo Street Children is an organisation that empowers street children with alternatives to street life. It also has an overall aim of changing the way that society perceives and treats street children in South Africa and beyond. Umthombo’s surf programme is an engagement programme designed to initiate the transition of street children out of street life.

The contest will provide young people from a variety of backgrounds with an opportunity to meet, strike up friendships and share in their passion for surfing. Surfing, a sport inherently associated with an elite few, is now being enjoyed by an ever increasing broader sector of our South African society. The surfing contest will serve to inspire social cohesion amongst young South Africans from all backgrounds. Surfing is fast becoming a sport in which young South Africans are finding their niche and enjoy sharing in the ‘stoke’ of surfing while following healthy active lifestyles.

A significant part of the contest is the Battle of the Wave Surf Session open to all under 18’s. This contest is intended to raise an awareness of the valuable work being carried out by Cape Town’s Shark Spotters Programme. The R50 Battle of the Wave Surf Session entry fee is in support of the Shark Spotters Programme. Shark Spotters is a unique programme aimed at finding the middle ground between white shark conservation and concerns of the public. The initiative employs around twenty Shark Spotters at nine of Cape Town’s most popular beaches.
The Surf Emporium Western Province Interschool’s Championship and Battle of the Wave Surf Session has amazing prizes up for grabs. Prizes include a computer for the winning Tag Team's School, surf hampers, a custom surfboard and a two hour professional surfing photo shoot with world renowned surf photographer AVG.

I disconnected my TV last month, so I'm only genttig the Madness in small doses as background viewing at the local bar. I used to follow the whole thing, but it's hard to be passionate about such distractions these days. Plus, I'm hanging out with folks who are more apt to gather for election coverage these days. Multiple world records at stake at BOS Earthwave Beach Festival at Muizenberg

18/09/2012
  MEDIA RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION
Wednesday 12 September 2012

BOS Earthwave Beach Festival
Guinness World Record attempt + Ocean & Beach events
Sustainable lifestyle event
Surfer’s Corner, Muizenberg, Cape Town
Saturday & Sunday, 29 & 30 September 2012

Multiple world records at stake at BOS Earthwave Beach Festival at Muizenberg

The Cape Town surfing community will be participating in attempts to break multiple world records at the fifth edition of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival which takes place at Muizenberg Beach on the weekend 29 & 30 September.

While the highlight of the beach and watersport festival that promotes sustainable lifestyle choices remains the attempt to break the existing Guinness World Record of 110 surfers riding the same wave set at Earthwave 2009, the organisers of the festival have introduced two more records that can be set if the waves are not ideal.

The first will be to try to establish a new Guinness World Record for the ‘longest line of surfboards laid on a beach’ which will take place at noon on the Saturday while the preliminaries of the New Balance WP Longboard Championships and the Surf Emporium WP Inter-Schools champs are being run.

“A record of 180 surfboards stretching for approximately 515 metres has been set at La Jolla in California but this has not been ratified by Guinness World Records,” says Paul Botha from Kahuna Promotions, the organisers of the festival.

“We are inviting surfers to bring their longest boards to the beach on Saturday and lie them nose-to-tail on the beach to create a spectacular display of surfing equipment. Everyone will receive a certificate of participation and the nett proceeds will be donated to worthy causes.”

The second new record attempt to be introduced this year is for the ‘largest logo created by surfboards’ and was set when 230 surfers paddled out and formed a peace sign in the ocean at Malibu in California in June last year to raise awareness about threats to ocean health.

This record will be challenged if the waves are too small to break the record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave’ on the Sunday at Earthwave.

Other new events to be staged at the 2012 festival include the Similasan Tandem Surfing Challenge where a man and a woman perform acrobatic lifts and poses while riding the same surfboard; the Coreban SUP Classic that sees stand up paddlers and surfskis race to Kalk Bay and back and the People’s Post Touch Rugby tournament.

There will also be free iron and glucose testing at the Spatone First Aid Tent and skincare advice from Michael Game Plan for participants and spectators, the chance to try out the latest Land Paddling boards and the popular BOS Dig for Gold treasure hunt will again see dozens of kids combing the sand for valuable prizes.

The Shark Spotters will have a stand in the marquee tent where you can find out more about sharks and the Sunflower Fund will be raising awareness and funds for the great work they do for those with leukemia alongside talks and presentations on environmental issues and ideas on how to reduce your impact on the planet.

In addition to the events and displays spectators of all ages will be kept entertained with numerous challenges and give-aways ranging from beach cleanups to quizzes with prizes from local and international brands such as Fondle; DaKine; Zigzag Magazine; Billabong; Rafikis; Von Zipper; Derevko Wetsuits; Kauai; Sector 9; MichaelGamePlan; Palmers and more.

The legendary Earthwave party atmosphere will be even better catered for this year with a party at Rafikis Restaurant in the city after the first world record attempt on the Saturday as well as the customary shindig at the popular Brass Bell in Kalk Bay on the Sunday evening featuring live music and comedian Mark Sampson, SA’s funniest surfer, where the official results of the world record attempts will be announced.

For the latest information of the BOS Earthwave Beach Festival visit www.facebook.com/BOS.Earthwave <http://www.facebook.com/BOS.Earthwave>  or contact the organisers at kahunasurf@mweb.co.za for particulars on how to become part of this sustainable lifestyle initiative.

Four fins are faster for The White Lightning.

16/09/2012

FANNING RIDES QUAD TO CHOPES VICTORY

© 2012 Surf FCS

Mick Fanning has added the Billabong Pro Tahiti to his ever growing resume of events victories. This latest achievement not only marks his first win at the famed left hand reef pass, but also his first victory riding a quad fin set up.

During the early rounds of competition when the waves at Teahupoo were relatively tame Mick opted for his signature FCS MF-1 template, but when the swell finally arrived it was time to add another fin to the equation.

“The quad set up definitely came into play on the final day when the swell kicked. I jumped from my 5’11” to my 6’0”, but I needed it to be a little more stable. Quads just give you so much more control and speed in the barrel, especially when you’re riding the foam ball”.

So what quad setup was Mick riding? The unique set up combined two Performance Glass (PG) templates; orange prototypes of the new MF-2 template in the front paired with clear G-1000 centres in the back.

Although this was Mick’s first win on this particular fin configuration, it was certainly not the first time he’d jumped on a quad.

“I’ve actually been experimenting with quads for a while now. We had a ton of solid swell on the Goldie a few months back and it was perfect for testing different quad combinations and how they performed in the pit. I’m still experimenting in smaller waves, but for solid hollow waves I’m definitely converted”.

Most of the FCS team riders on the ASP tour are choosing to get their boards made with a tri-quad fin configuration. This essentially gives the surfer the opportunity to ride their board as a thruster or a quad.

FCS Brand Ambassador Richie Lovett remarked, “I had a number of requests from WCT surfers for quad fins prior to the Tahiti event. In fact there’s been a general uptake on quad fins throughout this year. There’s advantages to riding a quad and now more and more of the tour surfers are catching on”.

Mick’s victory at the Billabong Pro Tahiti gives him a commanding lead as the tour heads to Southern California for the Hurley Pro at Lower Trestles.

 Can surfboard manufacturers get greener?

With only one week to go before the launch of www.thegreenersurfer.com we invite all surfboard manufacturers to attempt to make a more environmentally responsible surfboard in the month of October. This is not a competition, it is about sharing good ideas and inspiring each other to change for the better. Every board made will be featured next month on www.thegreenersurfer.com. For enquiries contact john@thebombsurf.com

Introduction

We all know that the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. As surfers we’re constantly engaging in and interacting with the largest wilderness mass on our plant.  Daily we move backwards and forwards between these aquatic and land based worlds. Over the years we’ve developed a sensitivity towards and appreciation of the ocean, which provides us with so much joy as well as an insight into how our behaviour effects the environment.

Looking into the future, could it be possible that surfers en mass become the de-facto environmental custodians of our global marine and coastal resources? Could we re-define the concept of what surfing localism means? Could we take our love and appreciation of the sea back onto the land and share that consciousness with our fellow land dwelling humans, could we be the agents of change? If we could, could we change the way people lead their lives so that our children and their children can enjoy the same resources we do?

Shew, that is a big ask but we have to start somewhere.

Thegreenersurfer is an experiment in attempting to grow and share an awareness and appreciation for our environment.

We're just a small bunch of surfers but we're passionate and it is a start.

Objectives

There is only one objective and that is to challenge our beliefs about how we choose to live as surfers and how by making small incremental changes to our lifestyles we can minimise and ultimately neutralise the negative impact that we as humans have on the health of our planet.

Mission

To share best practice, to positively inspire each other to make sensible and healthy changes to our lifestyles, to make informed decisions and choices and above all to motivate each other to change for the better.

How?

A blog based website where we get to follow the journey of 3 normal but different surfers who embark on a month long quest to become more aware of and sensitive of the impact our lifestyles have on our environment. The bloggers will attempt to increase their consciousness while decreasing their negative impact on the environment over the course of 30 days. They will share their learning’s with the rest of us. The public is invited to get involved either in the comments section of the individual blogs or as a blog post in the public blog section.

When?

The website is under construction and the selection process for the 3 chosen bloggers is underway. Dry launch is scheduled for 22nd of September. Public launch is scheduled for 1 October 2012. Thegreenersurfer will run for the month of October. Upon completion of the month we may decide to extend the program or wrap it up depending on public interest and the effectiveness in achieving it’s objectives.

That would really depned on if you stay on the boardwalk, oceanfront or bayside. The Holiday Inn on 17th St is located on the boardwalk and is one of the nicer hotels in O.C. There is a Hilton on 32nd St it is Oceanfront but not on the boardwalk. I would suggest www.ocean-city.com they have a section for hotels motels and a section for condos that would help you out. Some of the hotels offer rooms with kitchens that might be helpful with a small child. Good luck have fun.

KZN CHAMPIONS AGAIN

CNC proved, without a doubt, that they are currently the best surfing school in

KwaZulu-Natal... once again.  After defeating DHS by one point, in a nail-biting final last year, the pressure was on the school’s best surfers to prove that 2011’s success was no fluke.

The season’s fixtures resulted in CNC A and Northwood A finishing tie in first place at the top of the KZNSSL log.  The top five teams qualified for the grand finale, which took place at Dairy Beach, Durban on Saturday, 18th August.  It is amazing to note that the CNC B team finished 5th on the log and denied past powerhouse schools like DHS and Glenwood an opportunity to make the coveted grand finale.

The conditions on the final were incredibly testing with strong winds, rough seas and dangerous currents wreaking havoc on the contestants.  Clever strategy and excellent surfing proved to be the difference between the teams in the final.  The sponsors, Sanuk, Skull Candy and Far King ensured that the podium finishers took home some lavish prizes in conjunction with the floating trophy.  The final team standings for 2012 were as follows:

  1. Crawford North Coast A
  2. Northwood A
  3. St. Henry’s
  4. Westville A
  5. Crawford North Coast B

Back row L-R:  Kei Weyer, Jason Ray, Luke McCracken

Great memories Mac. I still wedonr what might have been had Tim not won that Green Card in the US lottery. He has done incredibly well in America but it was outside of our sector. In media his contribution could have been gigantic. And let's also not forget the long haired Sean also played such a big part.I remember thinking those would be the most exciting business days of my life. They were.

This is a great initiative, John. But what it is going to do is hold up a mirror to the surf industry, and the reflection isn't going to be pretty. My view is that surfers are among the worst polluters on the planet. If you took all the surfboards, leashes and wetsuits used by the world's top competitive surfers over their lifetime, dumped them in a landfill, and added the greenhouse gas emissions accumulated from their travels to 'exotic' surf destinations, we would all be horrified at the size of the garbage pile generated by a few individuals. That stuff is derived mainly from non-renewable fossil fuels, it doesn't bio-degrade very well, and it doesn't recycle too well either. Basically, it is not sustainable!! And remember, what you dump on the land eventually and inevitably has an impact on the ocean. If you expand that sample group to include all avid surfers, you'll find the garbage pile is a lot smaller per individual, but still the impact is considerable. The question is, how is the surf industry striving to mitigate the negative environmental impacts of its products? How much research is going into the manufacture of biodegradable, recyclable, renewal surf equipment. What I see is that manufacturers are tweaking their templates as often as possible so they can sell their latest models, thus encouraging their customers to chuck away their 'old' stuff in favour of the new. It makes business sense, but unless the materials used are seriously enviro-friendly, the consequences are very nasty for the whole planet in the long term. We should be riding surfboards made from wood or bamboo and our wetsuits should be made from wood pulp. That'd be fun. Sorry for the ous in the Cape! And the average surfer should stick to breaks he/she can reach by foot, bicycle, train or sail boat. No seriously, if this initiative makes us surfers think about our own lifestyles and encourages us to 'walk the talk' and demand enviro-friendly materials from our equipment suppliers, then we'll really start to make a difference. In the meantime, hang onto your old board and wettie for as long as possible, surf local and reduce your environmental footprint.

Chris thank you for your comment. The inspiration for this greener surfer idea came from reading Yvon Chouinard's book 'Let my people go surfing'. He is also the founder of Patagonia clothing and has used the success of his business to help with environmental issues on a fairly large scale (restoring river systems etc). He refuses to sell out and become beholden to profit driven share holders and does not pursue growth at all costs. He'd rather you buy a second hand pair of his product on ebay than selling you a new set just to increase sales. His whole philosophy is ahead of his time but he is a great example of how any business can behave. Ironically consumers are starting to buy into his thinking and his business is successful and profitable at a certain size. Herein lies the rub we have to take responsibility for our actions both as individuals and as business owners. For example when I look in the mirror as a business owner and ask myself do we really need printed magazines in this digital age or are they an indulgence? The answer is one I'm not sure I want to accept, at least not initially, but once I have maybe I start evolving in a more sensible direction. As an individual I know my Alaia has a smaller footprint than my polyeurothane thruster. I ride it quite often, but I still ride my thruster because frankly you can't get barreled on an Alaia like you can on a thruster. My point is this is not a light switch solution, it is a process. The whole point of the greener surfer is that we share best practice, that we START to move in the right direction and that we inspire each other to try. I look forward to you contributing in the blog section when we're up and running on October 1.

Great idea John......but,if you have a serious look at the progress of the brand patagonia since the publication of "let my people go surfing" you will clearly see the flaws. The fact is,most brands have some form of "environmental" product on offer, from Puma advertising "african grown cotton" to woolies fair trade everything!it has become the standard for advertising product, but unfortunately has made little or no change on the environment,as chris has so clearly explained.Dont believe me? the Patagonia team are in remote russia as we speak, flying helicopters and driving massive camper trucks through prestine wilderness looking for waves for the malloys next movie.......Patagonia concept stores are popping up all over the world as smaller owner run stores close down(you showed so much concern when the last cape town store closed its doors remember?) and the last time i walked into a Patagonia store(Prague) it looked just like any other high fashion store and i certainly did not see any second hand items! i think its a great initiative but dont be fooled by the marketing!

Yo, this is a great idea, can't wait to see what we can learn from it

Posted by John McCarthy on the 14/09/2012 14:18
Sele, I think the most dangerous thing for us to become is cynical of attempts that are not 100% solutions in themselves and then give up the task as hopeless. Any attempt, to improve our attitudes and approach towards how we live and impact the planet through our behaviour should be celebrated and shared. Who knows who it will inspire next or where the next really BIG idea will come from? Sure there is lip service and marketing hype, but even that adds to the groundswell of popular consciousness which is heading in the right direction. I doubt we'll find all the answers but we might be able to create an environment conducive to our children figuring it out. In the short while since introducing the idea of thegreenersurfer which isn't even live yet, I've learned so much and been exposed to so much good that people are doing on so many levels. This has really motivated me and made me feel more optimistic than I did even a month ago.

Have fun going down there anytime soon . The unrdewater power cable was recently cut ? And its not expected to be back for a few months, hence you will only have what power the generators are able to supply. I hope you don't mind living without power (I didn't for the week I was there), just letting people know :). BUT! I can also say, this resort rocked, I ate at their restaurant, and their service was amazing.

Posted by jamii on the 04/10/2012 12:49
The worst thing we as surfers can do is be cynical about whats brands or individuals have done to become commercially successful. Being environmentally sustainable or eco-friendly are two different idealogies- the sooner we learn to distiguish and balance between the two the better. Being 'green 'should not mean that everthing you do is 100% without impact, but needs to be rationalized is that the way we use or comuse goods be done in a way can be sustained.

I didn't want to start making corny jokes about sex on trnias, but I had to ask. I suppose it makes sense since in 1961 trnias were a more common way to travel long distances than they are today so train magazines were probably designed for a broader demographic.

Chris Chapman's comment got me thinking. Is there any way to start a surfing competition based on greener surfing principles? You could require that the boards are less toxically manufactured for a start, also apply other principles, too. While it may be that conventional foam boards are still better for outstanding performance if you are a top competitior, I believe that this could change by raising awareness with initiatives like this. Anyway, if we're honest, 99% of us wouldn't really know the difference between a top performance board and today's green board, would we? A Patagonia sponsored event? Maybe just...

VARIETY YEILDS US OPEN WIN FOR Julian Wilson

FCS Team rider Julian Wilson has given weight to the theory that changing your fins can enhance your surfing performance by winning the Nike US Open at Huntington Beach, Cal. In what is arguably the biggest spectator event on the surfing calendar, Jules utilised the performance benefits of three different fin templates on his way to defeating an all star field of high flying super stars.

“Matt ‘Mayhem’ Biolos made me a great board for the event, and we were hit with heaps of different conditions so I ended up switching fins almost every heat”.

Julian’s fin of choice for the early rounds was his signature FCS JW-1.
“The JW-1 was great for those first few rounds, the waves were pretty small and I wanted my board to turn super quick in the tighter sections. The smaller centre fin in this set also came into play and let me release the tail easily and get a faster rotation in the air”.

As conditions changed and wave size increased slightly Jules made the switch to Mayhem’s signature fin, the FCS GMB-5 thruster set.

“When the swell kicked I wanted a slightly bigger fin that could generate more speed and acceleration so I could utilise the sections when they came. You need as much speed as possible in a short amount of time at Huntington because you generally only get one or two big moves out the back. Matt’s signature fin has a nice balance of drive and manoeuvrability and it worked a treat right up to the final day”.

On the final day Julian switched back to the white FCS MF-1 Prototypes that have been his preferred fin of choice for competition over the past 18 months.

“The FCS MF-1 is a big fin with a lot of sweep and I can literally push it as hard as I want. On the final day conditions were really bumpy, and turns also came into play. I needed a fin that I could turn hard and feel confident that I was going to maintain control, the MF-1 template was perfect for that”.

After the post heat celebrations were over Julian went on to remark, “The variety of fin options FCS has on offer was really valuable this week at Huntington”.

A notable mention must also go to Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina who finished equal third in eth event. While Kelly maintained his commitment to riding a modified version of his K2.1 Quad setup for most of the event, Gabriel continued his allegiance to the PC-5 Graphic that features Inside Foil Technology (IFT).

I wish I lived near the coast! I want to make this into a poster with a pitruce of a surfer riding a gnarly barrel!I was thinking about Windmills this weekend (slightly less gnarly ).1. They can’t operate or do anything without wind.2. When they catch the wind they pull life giving water up through them.3. The purpose of drawing up the water is for others’ benefit.4. When they draw up the water they are fully functioning in their created design.5. The water and wind are connected by the windmill, yet a bystander can’t see the water underground or the wind in the air.6. Weeds, rust, lack of maintenance can all impede the effectiveness of the windmill.7. The wind rudder if rusted, bent, damaged or jammed will not allow the fan blades to re-position into the wind for maximum use.8. Windmills are like the heart of the farm, pumping vitality to the workers and their produce.9. Windmills can help cover a seemingly desolate place with what is needed to make it not desolate.10. Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23

Cape St Francis - In perfect four-foot pointbreak surf, Davey Brand won the Pro Junior Boys final against Dylan Lightfoot with two excellent scoring rides. Jeffreys Bay local Lightfoot was chasing a small score but couldn't find it amongst the excellent waves, and the win went to Brand.  Slade Prestwich and Benji Brand were tied in third place. "This has been my best event of the year," said Davey. "I'm just so stoked that my parents were here to see it."

The Billabong Pro Junior in Seal Point offered US $5 000 (approx. R42 000) in prize-money with $2 000 plus 250 ranking points going to the winner of the men‚s event and the women‚s winner receiving $1 000 of the total $2 000 prize-purse.

In the Pro Junior Girls it was the two friends Bianca Buitendag and Sarah Baum, with Bianca taking the top spot. Emma Smith and Tanika Hoffman were tied in third place.

The U12 Boys was won by a very stoked Max Elkington in a tight final, with Koby Oberholzer, Brage Jongensen and Angelo Faulkner taking the minor spots.

The U14 Boys was a hard-fought final with the surfers showing incredible maturity in their surfing. Koby Oberholzer, son of the legendary Frankie Oberholzer and surfing in his second final in a row, got a great barrel in the final in his bid for victory, but the end results were Jordan Maree in first, Koby in second, Donovan Wichmann in third and Adin Nasencamp in fourth.

With perfect waves reeling down Seal Point, the U16 Girl's final took to the water, and the final placings were Tahra Uren in first, Britney Linder in second, Anoush Zakarian in third and Inge Mclaren in fourth.

The U16 Boys final was another close battle, with a very hungry Matt McGillivray fighting all the way to the end, including a set wave on which he performed four radical turns for a score of 7.35 and the eventual heat win. He was followed by Benji Brand in second, Shane Sykes in third and Jordan Maree in fourth.

Before the finals went down it was time for the boys to take to the skies in the Red Bull Air Show. As the waves pumped through, and after a bunch of big attempts, it was Mikey February who took the R2k for a big forehand air reverse.

The DaKine Highest heat Score Of The Event award and R2k went to Bianca Buitendag with heat score of 17.9

Citroën Port Elizabeth, getting involved in their first ever surf event, awarded the Citroën Surfer Of The Event award and R2k to Koby Oberholzer for an amazing performance throughout the three day contest and two second places in two consecutive finals.

"This has been an incredible weekend of surfing," said Billabong South Africa marketing manager Chad D'Arcy. "We were blessed with great waves for the first two days and excellent surf for the final day, and great surf is what makes a good event."

Qualifying for the ASP World Junior Championships in Bali in October will be Beyrick De Vries, Mikey February, Slade Prestwich, Davey Brand and Dylan Lightfoot in the Men's division, and Bianca Buitendag and Sarah Baum in the Girl's division.
