Another BOMBsurf subscriber wins a brand new board!
29/06/2012
A lot of things are going down in Ballito it seems...the Mr. Price pro kicks off next week, Groundswell surfshop has a massive sale going down and it seems the surf Gods are smiling on the locals. Kyle Nicholson from Ballitto, also just became the brand new owner of a cusatom board from Safari Surf co, when his name was drawn in theBOMBsurf subscriber comp.
"I've been a subscriber to theBOMBsurf since the very beginning. I really love your mag so much, and I don't get to surf as much as I used to, so theBOMB really keeps me psyched, " said Kyle.
"This is like, only the second thing I've ever won in my life, and now that I'm getting a new board from Spider, I'm going to have to surf a lot more! All my mates are already tuning me, for not surfing enough, so now I have no excuses! Thanks guys!
Every week in July 2012 we are going to draw a BOMBsurf subscriber's name out of the hat and give them R4000 to spend on any surf goods in the Swindle Online surf shop.

I use a home PC and BlackBerry 8250 (pretty old school I know) about the same amnuot on each. Some days my BB runs a litttle slow or just won't open but, it usually treats me pretty good.

Yes I have skied all types of snow on the Justice. It does very well in chopped up and heavy snow. If you are at the resrot a lot you should look into next years Zealot from BD. It is a little heavier than the Justice but has more sidecut and is stiffer for plowing through thick snow. Both have a similar amount of rocker in the tip so they will stay on top.Andy

An exceptionally great pulsibh. This informative article covers for me exactly what this particular subject is determined by plus some from the important benefits that may be resulting from being aware of it as being should you. A friend once pointed out that you've got a completely different mindset when you make a move for certain instead of when youre simply just toying by using it. In the case of this kind of subject, I believe you're taking, or even start to think of, a more expert in addition to thorough approach to both exactly what and just how you are writing, which in turn helps you to keep on and obtain much better and guide other people who have no idea anything by what you've shared here. Wetsuit Review: 2012 Patagonia R3 front zip full suit
Patagonia R-3 Front Zip suit is a no-nonsense practical wetsuit built to last
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 June, 2012 : - - The preferred suit of the wild and woolly north, the Patagonia R3 front zip wetsuit has made some design changes for 2012. The company updated their kneepads and cuffs utilizing Supratex material. They’ve also redesigned aspects of the suit for improved fit and easier entry. They’ve tossed out the smooth skin neoprene so that the entire suit (with the exception of kneepads and cuffs) has the nylon outer layer.
All in all Patagonia’s re-vamped high-end R3 Front Zip wetsuit scores excellent marks for its craftsmanship, durability and painstaking detail to green construction, while the suit gets average marks in flexibility. In the wetsuit world there is a tradeoff of durability vs. flexibility. We’ve yet to encounter a wetsuit that is both super flexible and durable and will last more than one season. In that regard, the Patagonia suit is a no-nonsense practical suit built to last.
What sets Patagonia suits apart from the competition is their use of wool for insulation, their rock-solid seam construction and commitment to an environmentally sound wetsuit.
Wetsuits makers have recently begun to put a cushion of air between the surfer and suit as it’s the most efficient way to stay warm in the surf (it’s easier for the body to heat air than it is to heat water). Several companies use neoprene with little air pockets to achieve this thermal dynamic and there are several very light and airy neoprene suits on the market. The drawback is that if the neoprene is too light and airy (too many little neoprene chambers) then the suit loses some of its thermal properties.
New this year are the Supratex kneepads
Patagonia has steered around this issue with their patented merino wool method of insulation for all their coldwater wetsuits. During test surfs the wool was definitely warm, but we must caution that the wool lining feels quite different from other wetsuits. Gone is the ‘clammy’ feeling of traditional wet neoprene. During testing we discovered that once the water got into the suit, it warmed quickly. Sitting out the back while waiting for a set the suit really heated up.
Patagonia’s marketing angle is that the merino wool laminate is a better insulator than neoprene alone. And that the wool, laid out in patented grid pattern similar to other Patagonia weather gear, wicks water off of the body. The warmer insulation value allows the surfer to wear a thinner suit, for example, a 3 ml suit replaces a 4/3 ml suit in similar water temps.
Another benefit of a wool interior is that the suit dries very fast, allowing for more comfortable double sessions should you be so lucky to have the conditions and the time. The wool helps the suit slide on easily, making it one of the easiest fullsuits on the market to get into. The feeling of wool can take some getting used to, as on the first session the wool felt scratchy. However, after a breaking-in period the wool was downright comfy. An added bonus of the wool is that it is naturally more odor-resistant. Who doesn’t love to pee in their wetsuit? We did and after heaps of sessions the suit never developed that unmistakable wettie odor.
Close-up of Patagonia's seam construction
What also sets Patagonia suits apart is their no-nonsense approach to seams. While most wettie makers come out with new seam technology every season (with varying degrees of success), Patagonia has stuck to making the most durable seams on the market. While these seams last, their shortcoming lies in their ability to stretch. A wetsuit with glued and taped seam keeps water out and is usually soft and pliable, but we’ve all had those tape or rubberized seams peel off or crack after a season or two. For what the Patagonia seems lack in flexibility, they make up for in durability.
What also sets Patagonia suits apart from others is their commitment to environmentally sound production. Patagonia uses high-quality limestone-based neoprene which is not petroleum-based and the suit’s construction blends merino wool with recycled polyester (the kneepads are PVC-free too). If it’s important to you as a consumer that the few yards of material used to make your wetsuit are very kind to Our Mother Ocean, then this suit is a good bet.
In keeping with their function-not-fashion philosophy, you’ll only find this suit in black. The lines and panels are really basic. The R3 front zip neck is designed to seal tightly to minimize flushing. The dual neck gaskets on the R3 front zip can be restrictive if your sizing isn’t spot on. Everywhere else the suit fit snug and didn’t bind or suction-up. Check with your salesperson to help you choose the correct fit. Note: this is important not only for the Patagonia R3, but for all wetsuits. Another way to help make an informed wetsuit purchase is to ask the shop person which wetsuits are returned for repair. This will help you make an informed decision when choosing a well built suit.
Design-wise the Patagonia R3 Frontzip falls into the ‘durable’ camp for wetsuits. This year’s wetsuit has some subtle improvements on the company’s original launch into the wetsuit market like new kneepads & cuff material and the absence of smoothskin neoprene. All of which improve on the suit’s long-lastingness. However, the tradeoff is going to be flexibility. If you value a suit with high-performance flexibility, this is not the suit for you. Should you be in the market for a suit that is built well, long-lasting and carries high environmental standards, then this is your suit.
Teamrider Chris Malloy staying warm and barreled
Some selling points on the R3 Frontzip listed on the Patagonia website:
• front yoke is overlapped for easy on/off
• panels and seams are strategically placed for ease of paddling
• seam eliminated at back of knee for better comfort and flex while swimming and bodysurfing
• double neck gasket (internal/ external) minimizes flushing and is reinforced at the shoulders for durability
• fully lined with soft, chlorine- free merino wool for warmth, comfort, ease of paddling and environmental sensitivity
• durable Supratex cuffs at wrists and ankles minimize flushing, resist tearing; re-inforced with bar tacks and a polyurethane tab
• anatomically engineered knee-pads are made with strong and stretchy Supratex instead of stiffer, environmentally harmful PVC
• critical areas faced with nylon and recycled polyester for greater flex and durability; underarms are double-faced with nylon for flexibility
• seams are single-needle blind- stitched on the outside using nylon-bonded thread and triple glued for extra durability and strength; crotch seams are taped inside; critical seams are stitched, glued, reinforced and taped
Patagonia's mission statement: Make the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis.
Hi, I am doing a feature on surfing gear for Sports Illustrated magazine. Please would the Patagonia contact get in touch with me madibapi@gamil.com as I would like to include this suit.

happened to his. Major bummer. Then today, snmooee pointed out that there is a hole by the front zipper. Supermajor bummer!!I want to send the thing back to Patagonia but I don't want to wait the month to get it back. Also, when I called them, they said they will fix it only if they determine that the rippage isn't due to normal wear and tear. What the hell does that mean? That's a little subjective, isn't it? So, I'm pretty fvcking disappointed in that policy. Lifetime warrantly my ass.On the upside, the suit actually is really warm and dries super fast. After about the 5th time of wearing it, it really molded to my body and was actually the warmest, comfiest suit I've ever owned. At times I even found myself letting water into the suit to cool off! (In 51-degree water.) I guess it took a few times of wearing it for all its goodness to manifest.I'm still bummed about the cheapo separating seams, though. Not sure if I'm going to go through thte hassle of sending it back or just have snmooee in town repair it for the same cost of shipping it back to Ventura to have Patagonia fix it.
It is common knowledge among our tribe that June 20th is recognized as International Surfing Day so who better to celebrate then Kelly Slater, 11X ASP World Champion. In the spirit of ISD, we’ve created an Infographic comparing Slater to athletes from traditional sports who have made history and measured their achievements to our Champ’s. Have a look and decide for yourself if Slater truly is “The Greatest Athlete of All Time”.
Do you think Kelly Slater is “The Greatest Athlete of All Time”?
Bjorn Dunkjerbeck Windsurfing. 12 times overall world windsurfing champion. First World Title at 18. Last World title at 42 and still no 1 ranked for this year. 41 individual world titles. Won world titles in wavesailing, slalom, course racing and speedsailing. Kelly might be cooler and better looking but Bjorn is the terminator!!

I rather not have any music wheovtesar. I rather have Peter Townend or Ian Cairns do a heat by heat analysis like they did on ESPN. I need the wave score, who won the heat, who lost etc. I was raised up doing contest surfing and stupid highlights like these esp at the ASP level is retarded. Kelly Sater, Taylor Knox, Shane Beschen, Tom Curren, Tom Carroll do not listen to this kind of stuff and they surf circles around your pot smoking people you call real surfers .

Twig takes us behind the scenes on THAT day in Fiji in this BOMBsurf Interview.
Ok looking at the extended webcast things looked super gnarly as they ran those last couple of heats. The ocean clearly looked like it was overpowering the top 32 and from a spectators POV it looked like it was the right call to put the contest on hold. BOOM, then up pop like 15 of the best big wave riders in the world on big solid boards and the charging begins. To be fair to the 32 it did look like the local surface conditions improved but if anything it got bigger. So explain to our readers what was going through your head when you decided to drop everything and fly to Fiji, you must be sooo stoked they didn't run the event and you guys got to surf that historic session, please tell us how did it all go down?
I am at a bit of a loss for words at the moment John, I took a big chance at coming over to Fiji as it used up my entire years travel budget in one trip but after what I saw last year at Cloudbreak and because it's my life's passion to surf the biggest barrels I can find I just couldn't bare to miss an opportunity to surf 15-20ft tubes at one of the only surf spots on earth that hold waves like that. So I took a chance and went and the rest is history. I just got back to California today (it was cheaper to fly the long way around via Dubai) and surfed Cloubreak for three more days at 6-10ft with hardly anyone out and would have paid any amount of money to have had that experience. It's hands down the best big wave in the world and I know I say this way to often but I just had the best waves of my life.
Ramon Navarro and Reef McIntosh both got sick, crazy tubes, the one that you got around 4:45 on the vid was MENTAL! please talk us through that wave from start to finish, bru I know you're a loon but seriously, what if anything was going through your mind on that wave?. (If you didn't check it - live.redbull.tv/events/94/volcomproday3/#)
Well to tell you the truth in sessions like these it's all about patience and perseverance and trusting your judgement and experience. I would say that at a skill level my backhand is only about 50% compared to my forehand just because of my lack of experience in big lefts compared to rights so I really waited and chose my waves carefully all day. I had a crazy double up barrel early in the morning that was around 12-15ft and ran the whole length of the reef and that set me up nicely for the rest of the day as I could relax and enjoy the session from there. I then had a few nice big pocket rides that I picked up half way down the reef as well as two bad wipeouts when the wind picked up at a devils angle. It looked really clean out there but in fact the whole day had these crazy ribs going up the face and every wave was a bucking bronco ride from start to finish.
At around 2-3pm the wind clocked a little more offshore and I decided to push up the reef a bit more and see if i could try and make one from behind the first section and through the main bowl as every now and again these mammoth sets would come roaring down the reef and Greg and I talked about trying one out just to see if it was makable?
As soon as we paddled up there that wave came through! Just a full double up 18ft swell with not a drop of water out of place and I had to go. The takeoff was late but I managed to set my rail and get off the bottom before the main bowl but at the same time I could see if I wanted to make it I had to pull up really high on the face to avoid the shock wave and be able to gather speed to run down and out through the bowl. At one point I was so high on the face I thought I would loose it but then it just started funneling down the reef and took me along for the ride. I held on for dear life and felt it spit and then slow down and the next thing I know I can relax and take in the view of the biggest, most perfect barrel you could ever imagine.
What were you riding? That board looked solid and seemed to do what it should have in all the right places?
I was on a thick, wide Twig Model 8'0" that I designed for big barreling waves like Puerto, Bayview and some of the new waves we have found up the West Coast. It went insane and even though most of the guys where on 9'0" - 11'0"'s I felt super comfortable and felt that I probably would have not made my three best barrels if I had a bigger board because of how technical they where? I would like to thank Simon Fish for my boards this year, he is an amazing shaper and I really stoked to be riding his boards.
OK so you have the best swell in history for an asp world tour event and they call the event off... the big waves guys take over and shoulder their highly paid tour compatriots out of the way and take advantage of the conditions. Were there any of the top 32 who impressed you on that day?
John John...He was the only one really giving it a go and he is and will be the man for the foreseeable future.
In defense of the rest of the WCT guys, we are used to these types of waves and the equipment required to ride them and it's almost impossible to suddenly jump on a 9ft board and surf a 15 - 20ft wave. They are all totally prepared physically and there is no question about there ability but when the waves get like this it's all about your mind and mentally it's such a hard thing to do because the consequences are so sever.
The fact that it was webcast live and that the best big wave guys in the world where there to finally show off what we can do in waves of consequence was amazing for us and the sport. The WCT is one thing and those guys are incredible at what they do but I think now more people understand how good the top big wave guys are at what they do and that they are on a very similar level, skill wise, as anyone on the WCT tour?
Like a top WCT World Title contender said to me afterwards "Who really is the best surfer in the world, Kelly Slater or Mark Healy"? And I think that says a lot about what went down this week?
Kudo's to Twiggy!! His legend grows!!!
I reckon that one cannot diss the organisors or the pro's for what went down. One bad wipe out due to technically inferior boards or technique resulting in severe injury or death would have been tragic and avoidable.

There are actually quite a lot of pluitcraars like that to take into consideration. That may be a vast point to carry up. I provide the ideas above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions simply like the single you bring up the place an valuable factor will likely be working in honest good quality faith. I don?t recognize if greatest practices have emerged round problems comparable that, however I’m sure that your job is clearly recognized as a fair game. Anyhow, in my language, there aren’t a lot good quality supply resembling this.

Zulus go to Capetown.
14/06/2012
Team Zulu - 2012
The hangover … SA Champs 2012
Where do I start?
9 days ago, I ventured forth on a journey to the annual SA Champs held down in Cape Town. The crew leaving the bay (Richards Bay) was tight knit, “Oupa” Mic was to navigate the team in his trusty caddy to our destination, while Vaughan “Gangsta” Weyer provided entertainment and I look forwarded to my best result to date.
Gangsta Weyer
We needed to klap a onetime detour to collect, the infamous south coast lighty Davey Gouws. For a guy that talks a lot of game, he looked pretty freaked out at Durban station all by himself when we eventually arrived.
White fisted and clutching every item that he owned tightly against his weedy frame, this youngster sure looked pretty happy to see a bunch of guys that were dropping phrases such as “putty rubs” and “zulu initiations” for the last couple days via text messages.
We loaded the lighty in back with Vaughan and headed off into the unknown. Our only companions were music, trashy talk and the occasional surf gossip.
Burning Sky
Blazing our way down the highways of Southern Africa, riding a wave of excitement and anticipation, our trusty surf van zigzagged across the countries landscape. As the temperature dropped, and our altitude increased, I could swear that it sometimes mistier in the car than out on the road.
Mic and I exchanged navigating the van in shifts. In the early hours of the morning, I crashed out leaving the two merry men (Vaughan & Mic) in control. The plan was to do a straight shoot, from Richards Bay via Bloem and all the way through to Cape Town.
The view from within the magic surf van
Sleep barely embraced me, although I can’t account for the time that past. All I know is that I awoke to a conversation between Mic and Vaughan, both amping in the dark looking through the windscreen as dawn approached.
WTF!
Vaughan and Mic, had decided during my time lapse that J-Bay sounded like a better bet and changed course once they hit Bloem. We had just missed an epic swell run, but St Francis had a couple funs ones as the sun crept over the horizon.
Frothing, the team put on our new suits. Each one of us had their own story as to how we had got these suits. Each a fine piece of equipment, a performance skin if you will, well except Vaughans.
Vaughan had been swindled. He had a Chinese “burn” suit. It made him look like the Oros man, with white and black patches. The seams were all wrong, it let all the water in at all the wrong places and didn’t go down to well with any of the onlookers.
Worlds worst wetsuit
After a fun session, we shot down to Still Bay and met up with our mate Hanco, whom runs the Garage Surf Shop. What a classic guy. He welcomed us home, put on the braai and provided much needed beers.
The next day after checking out some of the local spots, we got on the road. Meeting up with the rest of the Zulu team, we had a quick afternoon session down at Witsands and were pleasantly surprised by the water temperature. Well everyone except Oupa Mic.
That evening, the Zulu’s looked Don arriving in our tradition turquoise and black team kit. You could feel the eyes on us as we entered the Kommetjie Primary School hall. I think some people must have thought that the zulu team had really turned a new leaf, that we had let go of our traditions and taken a metamorphic transition into what look like a well run team.
The team looked solid, I was pumped and so the event started.
Team Huddle
For the next 48 hours I had the opportunity to surf all my heats in 1ft low tide onshore long beach. That’s pretty much all I have to say on that point.
Brutalised, depressed and left feeling “unfinished” we headed to the bar. 2nd round exists are never cool, and so the 24 draughts of Stella flowed. At one stage a heated debate and argument broke out between us.
Girlfriends phoned in worried, as one of our phones had taken a call and all that could be heard where drunken slurs and bad language. At one point a group of local youngsters actually handed us a draught and wished us all the best and left the bar, I think it was probably due to our festivities. It was tragic.
Barely making it home along the coastal road back to Scarborough we spotted the SKZN junior house. This is where Davey Gouws and the rest of the underlings were staying for the duration of the contest. Brave on beer, and in fine tradition we took it upon ourselves to redecorate their place for them while they slept.
Toilet paper accessorised the roof and fencing, while nicely drawn language and remarks were left on their windows with our newly purchased cold water wax. I believe a creepy from the pool was also found on the road outside the establishment the next morning.
For the next 2 days we watched as the rest of the Zulu’s were massacred in dribble.
Saturday evening came along. With that, news that our surf caddy had been the scene of a horrible crime. Apparently one of the guys had given a local “coloured” guy a lift being the friendly zululander that he was, only to realise much later on during the day that items from the vehicle had been slicked as part of the transport levy.
With tears in their eyes, Mic and Vaughan confessed their ignorance and told me how they even went back and found this guys mom in an attempt to retrieve the wallet. I’m sure the little old coloured women was thinking “are you guys for real?”.
It now was all on me, to ensure that Mic, Vaughan and Davey were catered for financially until we got back. Getting a little anxious and annoyed, I started feeling the need to get back home and told the boys not to worry they could sort me out when we got back.
We watched as the last Zulu fell on the final day. Philip Nel put on a gusty performance as a first time zulu and what a classic guy. Much respect for paddling through the gnarly misty cliff set that bombarded him in his heat.
So battered and bruised, we packed the car and started making our way back. Again the plan was to shoot straight from Cape Town, along the N1 via Bloem and then back down towards Durban.
I could taste the humid air of zululand already. A quick stop at a petrol station, to fill up and meet up with Hanco were in order before we left. We said our good bye, and prepared to get on the road when Mic dropped the line “now whatever you do Mal, don’t lose your wallet”.
WTF!
In and amongst all the chaos, I somehow managed to leave all my valuables on Hanco’s car roof. He was gone now, leaving us with no money and very little hope. In vain, we ran along the road desperate to locate my wallet.
I am a man of faith, and obviously the man upstairs has a sense of humour because as we all started to breakdown emotional Mic’s phone rang. It was the little old coloured lady, she had Mic’s wallet. With what fuel we had left, we turned around and drove back 45mins towards Kommetjie.
We ended up, picking up a rasta dude with a tattoo on his forehead. Charming young man. As we bobbed and weaved through the township in our caddy and trailer, we eventually arrived at the predetermined location. A bit of hussling, R40 donation to the charming young man with a tattoo on his forehead and we were back in action.
This time, Mic would be the financial aid that got us home. We shot straight from there to the local mall to withdraw funds and get back on the road. Mic hit the ATM while we all hangout in the car celebrating our new found victory.
WTF!
Mic returned, without a card as the ATM had now swallowed his card.
Johannes Loubser, ex Zululander, now Capetonian spiritual lawyer hippie invited us to stay with him in Kleimond at his family’s house for the evening. At least we could rest up and hit the banks in the morning.
The loubser family house in Kleinmond is truly beautiful and it oozes family tradition and history. With no real proof of identification, and no phone, Absa weren’t able to assist me. Mic was able to access some funds in a limited way but things still looked pretty grim.
A quick message to my boss, explaining in 140 characters my drama, stirred a simple response “waves must good”. But wait what is this. A mate is willing to pay us R800.00 to transport his newly bought puppy from Mossel Bay to Richards Bay. That’s us! Wishing J-Lo all the best and thanking him for his hospitality we set off once again with regained strength and faith.
We absolutely missed the puppy guy, got lost, got found, collected the pup, hit the road, drove 22 hours and eventually rolled into the bay absolutely finished. Would I do it again … absolutely!

Lots of of bloggers not too happy with the new iPad.There was too much hopola regarding it and alot blogers got turned off.You see, I can actually see some of the awesome potential of the device. Third-party applications for composing music, games, newsprints and magazines and FFS books, all sorts of neat stuff, but IMHO they failed to sell it right (aside from the books). It looks kind of incomplete

BBong's opening media statement for JBay 6 Star: " This year the contest is a six star World Qualifying Series event, opening up the tournament to a wealth of local South African talent". The real truth: 138 "confirmed" entries (6 wild cards to follow), of which only 15 are South Africans + 2 internationals (Jordie and Trav) - 23 Zaffers who entered have been left out. How exactly is this "opening the tournament to a wealth of local SA talent"?

When Big Wave Surfing went for a walk on the Moon (Fiji part 3).
10/06/2012
Day three of the Volcom Fiji Pro saw some of the largest waves Cloudbreak has ever seen. Though we were only able to get through 2 heats before the contest was called off, Volcom opted to continue to broadcast and cover the jaw-dropping free-surfing that was taking place. People watched history making waves Live around the world, complete with commentary and re-plays! Here are some of the highlights from the feed.
Yes definitely! You wdluon't believe how obsessive many tweens are with Roxy and Billabong etc etc, and many of the guys wear Volcom and Billabong all the time. Trust me, it's big!Amazon, Mississippi and Chances are the main stores which sell only surf brands, and there are other lesser known smaller stores in each city/suburb that also sell surf brands.

The Open Men's SA Champs is becoming a Puntfest.
03/06/2012
Puntfest - Photographs and words by Nic Bothma
This years SA Champs crescendoed on the final day at one of the Cape's power beach breaks, Misty Cliffs. What was significant and poignant was the progressive surfing on display and the aerial assault that gained momentum throughout the day with every critical section providing the perfect lift off for the young crop of South African surfing talents. In todays competitions it is no longer important to ride waves to their end getting in a lot of turns and transitions. Fully powered up, explosive and progressive surfing is seeing even single aerial manoeuvres being scored higher than a bunch of less impressive carves. As we saw when John John Florence beat Parko in the final of the WCT Brazil the evolution of competitive small wave surfing has taken us into a new era. The following slideshow, a small slice of the action, but testimony to the talents of our top young athletes showcasing their aerial antics as they embrace this evolution in competitive surfing with world class aerial manoeuvres...
Max Armstrong winning the Blowing Up Award pulling off a clean and impressive frontside 360.
During the VonZipper Air Show Max Armstrong generated maximum speed and in turn got radical height in his aerials.
Beyrick de Vries displaying perfect form with his wide stance and centred body positioning making him balanced and at one with his board.
Rotating both ways Beyrick landed most of the aerials he attempted showing us these progressive moves are crucial arrows in the quiver of todays competitive surfer.
Height, power, speed and balance, Beyrick delighted the crowd illuminating the path of progressive surfing.
In a heat Steven Sawyer spent a lot of the time out the water!
Dylan Lightfoot effortlessly wafting the tail across this exploding close out.
New South African surfing champion, Casey Grant would not have got there on just snaps and carves alone.
Matt Bromley, as versatile as he is in big and small waves he has a polished and well rounded style punting his way over as many sections as possible.
Chad Du Toit epitomising the go for broke attitude of the countries best aerialists.
The VonZipper Air Show was won by Diran Zakarian who was right at home in the cross shore conditions and made some clean airs.
Diran Zakarian one of the numerous progressive riders blowing up at the moment and taking our sport to new heights.

It would be illegal if you tsaeperssd or flew in unauthorized airspace. As long as you fly where the law permits, it's not illegal. You are not allowed to take photos of controls on a commercial airplane, etc though. Usually just out the window.

Klee Strachan is the strong silent type.
03/06/2012
KZN South Coast Adopted Son & Dark-horse, Klee Skei Strachan By Alistair Jones
"I have only know Klee for a few months. He is certainly a man of few words and prefers to express himself through his surfing. He commits to every punt, turn and snap as if it where his last."
Its not always about power turns and big punts - Klee floats and early morning section
Looking up to and following surfers like Damien Faharenfort and Dave Richards - Klee lays it on the rail.
The Morning Sun + Beachie = Fresh Snap of this inside section.
Hours of time spent in the gym working on Strength and Cardio helps Klee insert power into his snaps and turns
As and U12 competitor Klee was lucky enough to travel with Jordy and be inspired - Klee with an inspired backhand punt.
As a grom watching movies like Campaign & Fanning The Fire got
Klee amped even on the onshore days like this.
Not only is he a solid surfer, he is a committed lifeguard as
well - Here he is tearing a strip off of his stretch of office.
Another Jordy inspired punt........And yes.....he lands it.
Committed progressive surfing takes its toll on your equipment
"Growing up in Muizenburg the waves are soft" Klee says, "You
have to learn to make your own speed for turns and snaps even on small
days"
Front-side or backside - Klee on his way to victory in recent
Warner Boys comp.
Committed progressive surfing takes its toll on your body - 1
week into a forced 4 week layoff.

Yes, driving to work in the dark is bad. Worse is tiynrg to get up at 330a-345a, when the brain thinks its still 230a-245a, to drive 1.5 hours into the desert to watch construction equipment clear land. Which, at 7am is not quite light enough to really see the ground well (too many shadows). Its no wonder I overslept my alarms one day last week.Though, I'd rather not be driving back home at 5-6pm when its dark either. Too many nutjobs on the road. Needs to be a middle groundSarahb4s last [type] ..

Dungeons growls as the big wave beast comes to life.
03/06/2012
Photographs and words by Nic Bothma
With the Southern hemisphere surging towards winter the frontal sytems driving up the big stuff into the Cape's outer reefs have started gaining momentum. 30 May was predicted to be a big day with not much wind. The forcasted swell did not macth expectations but the core crew of local chargers were joined by some newbies as they enjoyed a fairly solid day at the Dungeon. Shifty, a little bumpy and far from perfection this collosal reef break awoke to at least kick off the Cape big wave season with something to keep the crew interested.

Excellent article that I was so glad to see prietnd in the SDN Sat. May 28. Since I could only click to recommend it but could not comment online because the SDN is revamping their online comment system (for the better), I will comment here. This has been a pet peeve of mine for years: a couple has a dog that one or both have had for years. Later on they have a child, and the dog ends up at the shelter, or worse, euthanized because the people in its life did not take proper care of it, i.e. never taught their young child how to approach the dog, what is and what is not acceptable interaction/play with the dog and in the sad end (sometimes tragically for the child)the dog looses its life for this lack of responsibility of the people in its life, or looses the only life it has ever known when it is relinquished to a shelter for something that should never have happened. So unfair and unnecessary. Thank you for writing about this very important subject matter. There are parenting classes for expectant parents today. I think there should be dog parenting classes required before anyone is allowed to adopt a dog (for people who have not had a dog in their lives prior). I have had dogs since the age of five and I was taught at that early age to always be kind to animals, never to tease or in any way torment them. How I wish everyone had the early instruction that I got from my father who always modeled kindness to animals.

I taught it to my dog!!She is VERY suvsmisibe, so it was easy to get her to roll over on her back.I'd say: Band bang! and point my finger downwards, and she'd lie down, and automatically roll over onto her back. Then I praise and treat like CRAZY when she does it. Now I can get her to do it without saying a word. Try louring your dog to a down with a treat, and rolling him on his back (NOT with force) and when he does, say Bang bang! and treat, Bang bang! and treat and so on and so on..
