Got a quick but important quesoitn. If I have already written an article on Ezine and copy that article and post it as an article into this system, will I get penalty from ezine for duplication? Ezine maybe very strict on this so need to know if I can use my existing articles there or if I need to write completely different ones for this system you're introducing here. Thx and good video by the way.
It's an exciting day of the week when the lineup looks like this followed by an appearance from one of the best surfers in the world.
Without much fanfare this time Jordy Smith slipped into the lineup & set the tone of performance with the rest following his lead.
Chad du Toit was the only one to stick with a few lefts until following over to the right.
Quinton Shabalala was seen baring his fins.
While others had a more wrap around approach to their turns Davey Van Zyl threw in a little snappy punch to his.
Matt Pallet found his own little inside section to wrap around on.
By now we have all seen the air Slater landed in the Bells final, Jordy with his own display proved why he is a World Title contender.
Chad and Jordy are good friends and what better form of flattery then imitation.
Bryce Burness' dad was surfing New Pier before Jordy was born, Bryce keeping the family surf roots alive and well.
Matt brought a dose of in your face action.
Davey just couldn't resist throwing some airs of his own on his favorite board.
Quinton getting inspired by Jordys display.
Just to keep with the theme of the day Ryan made the Logie appearance.
Average Joe would be happy with this kind of air, Matt was not.
After all the high performance surfing one can still appreciate an old school approach.

I’ve been reading up on Disruptor, and fully udernstand circular buffers etc (being an old C hacker)I’m having a hard time trying to think the problem thro’ of an enterprise solution. It appears from the documentation (and I’m probably wrong here) that Disruptor operates in an application or a single app domain. How would I go about using this across the wire e.g. A Silverlight client , or any client for that matter ?Would the consumer be a server component pushing messages over the wire to the SL client, WCF, TCP or whatever, obviously latency bound by doing that.I’ve looked at the unit tests in the .NET port, fine, but still can’t get my head around a possible “enterprise” solution.Hope this makes some sort of sense, or am I barking up the wrong tree ?

Trusting Random Events
22/04/2012
Trusting ‘random’ events.
So the official reports are out. Facebook rise. And the shark attack has been dissected, measured and discussed to the tee. Even Jan from Pretoria seems to have a solid opinion on the case. All thanks to the social media vehicle, creating soapboxes for the masses. Sometimes a steaming dangerous train when news breaks fresh…
For us Kogel Bay locals another reality beckons.
Away from the T.V couch. Away from the comfy chair in front of your computer.
In due time we will return to Caves. Long after you forgot about David and his family.
Here you’ll find our secluded beach nestled in a protected biosphere. Beautiful mistress. Home to some of the most consistent and hollow surf in Cape Town. Great White breeding ground. A dedicated local crew sharing this powerful gem year round. And now, and now home to a fatal shark attack on a friend.
At our spot. Our sand. Our roots.
Yes, Ocearch left False Bay on Monday. And yes they didn't even chum that much reportedly (30 litres). It's almost impossible to objectify the cause of such an attack.
How can any of us (Including the shark scientists) claim to know enough to predict Great White shark behaviour accurately.
A violent, fatal attack happened. Four sharks were caught, handled and returned disorientated and confused in the day’s prior. Reports are rife all over the coast of how sharks would leave the areas where Ocearch were conducting previous research. Sharks in these areas were also caught, hoisted, drilled, tagged and released? What about the stress endured? What about the shark experiment fatality rate? It is known that these man handled sharks would immediately leave the areas after being tagged.
Shark cage operators reported a decline of Great Whites around Shark Alley, Gansbay.
Ocearch reports that this particular shark was not tagged. But what about the second shark? What about intra and inter species communication?
Yes, more research is necessary, but what if that research alters behaviour. How would you feel if this research takes place around your local beach? A beach that’s been deemed safe by the experts.
As I’m typing this, my close friend Mat calls. An eyewitness, He needs a shoulder. It’s 18:30, and I’m sitting across from Lara on my third glass of red wine. Our hearts still heavy. The speakerphone echoes on our kitchen walls.
“Bro, I have to do an interview with NBC New York tomorrow. Should I do it bro? I’m tired. I went to Caves today and just sat there. Soaked in the whole deal you know… I want to help people. But…but perhaps my info helps? Bro? There were so many dolphins in the area. But something was different. Things were wrong. We knew... We knew they were there. We knew it deep-deep down. I had this bad feeling. Things just didn’t seem in place today…”
Mat calls me back later to tell me that he has declined the interview. Peace.
“The story has been told enough.”
We surf this bay. We know the rules. We enter our other world each time we get knee deep. We all have numerous stories of encountering these apex predators while surfing here.
But for the last week, since this research boat entered our horizon (literally) I felt uncomfortable. For this whole last week I was surfing in this Bay, and it just felt if these rules were broken. If the ever karma balance was disturbed. If natural behaviour was changed.
Sacred, trust broken.
This is my clumsy emotion. Immeasurable. But that is what we felt during this build-up. I even predicted this at the beginning of the week, and my wife asked me to pull back my words. That I was tempting fate. She was also worried…
“Baby, at the very least this Dr.Brody should put out a public warning. How can he claim that the experiments won’t change the sharks behaviour?”, was my rebuke.
My words were still luke-warm, when I spoke to Mat over the phone on that morning. His voice traumatised and shaking,” The, the shark is still swimming in the swallow’s bru. David is, David is… dead…ja…dood…Gustav’s brother…Shit…it happened so fast…killed…just blood everywhere. The sharks are still swimming around bru…There are two sharks now bro…patrolling”
Perhaps. Just perhaps something positive could come from this...In the end we will return to our beach. Surfing Caves during the autumn, with only a handful of the crew out. Chilling by the shower while the sun sets red over Steenberg. Hiking back up through the fynbos in the moonlight, and drinking from the stream at the top before greeting al the boys goodbye. Hopefully knowing that our Bay and it's creatures have settled again, back to normal, and that we can trust it's natural way and rules. Please let us not have a repeat of this run of events? Authorities, experts and ocean users. Please.
It's a sad day here in the Boland...one of us died yesterday.
Sometimes they take us.
Rest in peace David…later. We’ll miss you truly brother…
No words can can come close to explaining, but these are as close as I have read.
Respect.

Thank you for writing this.... I think many in the surfing and ocean going community feel the same way, and I really appreciate your tone throughout

A really heartfelt tribute to a surfing brother....
and yes a brother died in very tragic circumstances, but I think the real tragedy lies not in the operators of Ocearch, not in the issuing of the permit, not in the chummers and cage diving operations, but in the fact that we as humans beings don't show enough respect to our greater planet and the creatures that live along with us on and in it. Assumptions are our biggest stumbling block into real understanding and until we as terrestrial beings are able to live and breathe in the aquatic environment I doubt we will ever conclusively understand sharks.... we don't even understand our fellow human beings.
Rest in Peace David
Posted by Grant Sinclair on the 23/04/2012 10:28
This was a real tragedy, the loss of a life so young and obviously loved. It is also a natural human condition to lay blame, as this somehow will make us feel better. Was someone to blame? I have no idea. I have surfed Koel bay and it was one of my most memorable surfs but that day too there was a shark in the lineup. We have also had our own tragedies here in East London. The most memorable being the death of Bruce Corby and the damage to Andrew Carter’s leg that needed 400 stitches to put it back together again, all in one attack. And so it goes up and down our coast, part of our sport unfortunately. Personally I don’t think anyone was directly to blame but where we have no idea what the effect will be I would rather err on the side of caution. I hate the idea that a landlocked uninformed individual can make this type of decision and then, just as uniformed, have a kneejerk reaction to the attack. Is this what we can expect from the nuclear plant at Thyspunt? I think these decision makers should be made to swim where their decisions have such an impact or to drink the water that emanates from the nuclear plants they are going to gift to us.

Great words Phil, you have shared what many have been unable to express or articulate in their grieving.
Even for someone like myself who didn't know him, David's passing is humbling and the impact will remain with all of us for ever!
My deepest condolences to all whom know and loved him.
Regardless of your sentiments on the influence or circumstances that may have lead to caused this tragic loss, as ocean users we must accept the reward and risk each time we enter the water in pursuit of pleasure. As Mark Foo once said,"If you want the ultimate thrill, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price."
All are welcome, as tonight we hold a Shark Spotters meeting at Strand Lifesaving Club to discuss the prospect of CTCC, rolling out the program for Strand and Kogel Bay beaches. If implemented, I have no doubt that we might suddenly find our beaches closed more frequently that we ever anticipated. This might serve as a double edge sword what may help protect us, but also highlight how much we had previously taken for granted.
May we all take a deep breath, reflect on what we have learnt and seek a way to co-exit with these magnificent creatures that will honour David's memory.

Your loss of David has churned up so much again for us in Plett who still 8 months later (to the day today) still miss Tim, still relive his shark attack, strangely felt something had changed, in the case of Plett surfers we had had too many visits by whites in the weeks leading up to Tim's death, "his" shark stayed in the shallows, there are so many things, we have no research boats chumming here or even fishing boats for that matter, we mourn our friend everyday just like you will and I wish so much we could all meet and share, I had to stop doing newspaper interiews because the story had been told and we just wanted to be left in peace, last week 2 of our surfers were chased out not once but twice by a male white, this is the hardest thing we are all going to have to deal with - we witnessed our friend get killed in front us by a predator and can we really really blame the predator as you said yourself who knows what makes a white attack one of us? I wish you all so much love and healing as we down the road from you know how you feel about this and strangely enough there are similarities, we have sat at our surf spot where Tim was attacked and listen to absolute far-fetched versions of what happenned that fateful morning when he should have been at work but hey you don't miss cranking waves right? Wow we really have so much to deal with still, my heart breaks for all of you, Tim and I were going to grow old together, he was my best friend and I still not sure how to say goodbye, perhaps its the violence of a shark attack, talk about David, talk about sharks amongst yourselves, get back in the water, it took some of us 24 hours and others 3 months, surf for David, hold his family close and know that this healing is going to take ages - if at all. Drop us a facebook or an email any time you want, strength and love to all of you!

Posted by TrevorG on the 25/04/2012 09:47
First off! Well said Phil! The terrible incident last week has really hit home the sheer scale of outrage and concern felt by all surfers. This is ironically one major issue that could help us understand the dynamics of shark behaviour, namely tagging and monitoring these apex predators to minimize the possibility of attacks.HOWEVER the cowboy approach these chops take is nothing more than animal porn for us to ooh and aah over. Solid science is required to decode the signals that indicate potential dangerous conditions.
All anecdotal evidence suggests there was a heavy presence of feeding by various marine species in the whole of the Western Cape recently. Yellowtail,Kob, Elf at Muizenberg through to Strand. Zandvlei fish die offs all and unusual catches of fish seldom seen locally suggest a major freak event.
I heard of the attack while speaking to a fly fishing expert and we were talking about exactly this, the highly unusual occurances when the news report went live. This is prime fish activity before fish shoal and head up coast after the baitfish. The fact that we have had a lot of high pressure( South East) activity further compounds the situation.
Based on the above, I believe that we are going to have increased shark activity over the next 4 months and all should be extremely vigilent and careful. This is especially relevant to shark ambush sites such as Koeel Bay, Jongens, Still Baai, Buffels, Mossels and other spots known to all.
In closing I offer my condolences to the family.R.I.P. David!

What a well written piece from the heart. I moved up to KZN from Gordons Bay. I said to someone not even 2 weeks ago that the only thing I miss (apart from mates) is Kogel Baai, surfing Caves & Beaches, diving kreef at Roundrocks the mountains. That dream has been smashed to pieces! Always knew it COULD happen but never thought it WOULD happen. Like finding out your daughter is no longer a virgin. Our innocent Bay is now officially on the list of dodgy places on our coastline.... Respect Phil, good luck with the process of returning to the Bay when you do and I hope that is the last of Kogel Bay in the news for the wrong reasons.... ever...

I have never surfed nor bodyboarded but a long time ago I windsurfed a lot. I accepted as you, that when you enter the sea it comes with risk. It was a risk I was prepared to accept for the joy it brought me.
Something about this tragic event however kept on bothering me. Maybe it was the incredibly sad picture on the front page of The Burger of a dad and brother looking out over sea, maybe it was something else. You words has however somehow captured what I was trying to get out of me.
Well said Phil!

Scientists spot freak waves from space.

Freak waves spotted from space
Esa tasked two of its Earth-scanning satellites to monitor the oceans with their radar
The shady phenomenon of freak waves as tall as 10 storey buildings has finally been proved, the European Space Agency (Esa) said on Wednesday.
Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously but, until now, no one quite believed them.
As part of a project called MaxWave - which was set up to test the rumours - two Esa satellites surveyed the oceans.
During a three week period they detected 10 giant waves, all of which were over 25m (81ft) high.
Strange disappearances
Over the last two decades more than 200 super-carriers - cargo ships over 200m long - have been lost at sea. Eyewitness reports suggest many were sunk by high and violent walls of water that rose up out of calm seas.
But for years these tales of towering beasts were written off as fantasy; and many marine scientists clung to statistical models stating monstrous deviations from the normal sea state occur once every 1,000 years.
The waves exist in higher numbers than anyone expected
Wolfgang Rosenthal, GKSS Research Centre, Germany
"Two large ships sink every week on average," said Wolfgang Rosenthal, of the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht, Germany. "But the cause is never studied to the same detail as an air crash. It simply gets put down to 'bad weather'."
To prove the phenomenon or lay the rumours to rest, a consortium of 11 organisations from six EU countries founded MaxWave in December 2000.
As part of the project, Esa tasked two of its Earth-scanning satellites, ERS-1 and ERS-2, to monitor the oceans with their radar.
The radars sent back "imagettes" - pictures of the sea surface in a rectangle measuring 10 by 5km (6 by 2.5 miles), which were taken every 200km (120 miles).
Around 30,000 separate imagettes were produced by the two satellites during a three-week period in 2001 - and the data was mathematically analysed.
Esa says the survey revealed 10 massive waves - some nearly 30m (100 ft) high.
"The waves exist in higher numbers than anyone expected," said Dr Rosenthal.
Wave map
Ironically, while the MaxWave research was going on, two tourist liners endured terrifying ordeals. The Breman and the Caledonian Star cruisers had their bridge windows smashed by 30m waves in the South Atlantic.
Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously
The Bremen was left drifting for two hours after the encounter, with no navigation or propulsion.
Now that their existence is no longer in dispute, it is time to gain a better understanding of these rogues.
In the next phase of the research, a project called WaveAtlas will use two years' worth of imagettes to create a worldwide atlas of freak wave events.
The goal is to find out how these strange cataclysmic phenomena may be generated, and which regions of the seas are most at risk.
Dr Rosenthal concluded: "We know some of the reasons for the rogue waves, but we do not know them all."
And you thought big waves only occurred of Cape Town? Check this off Durban.

Anybody, especially surfers need to read The Wave by Susan Casey.
It covers the theory, history, demystifies the possibility of how mega waves are produced and the pursuit of the "big wave" surfers seeking to find & ride the 100ft wave!
Also gives detail insight to Laird Hamilton & co pioneering tow-in surfing and documents numerous big waves sessions, to also explains how the largest wave ever recorded at +1750ft was created.
Undoubtedly one of the best books I have every read!

Big or small Kane Benneworth will be in the lineup.
Small mid-break surf on a lowtide means photographer gets to stand and surfer gets close, Steven Sawyer about to pop it up for the lens.
Davey Van Zyl didn't want to boost airs on his favorite board but throw a camera in front of any young surfer and resistance is futile.
Kane Benneworth gives a little Bede Durbidge head tilt on a smooth turn.

This is getting a bit more stcejbuive, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of neighbors will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune Social is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I've noticed notihng from this. I paid €40 for 50ml of this stuff. Used it last night on a white/yellow spot after applying everything else. Woke up and I still have the same spots I used it on. I'm not sure what it's supposed to do but for €40 I'd at least expect when I use it with a cotton bud on specific white spots at night, I don't have them in the morning. Redness is even still there. Zero effect
A young bodyboarder was attacked and died on the scene while surfing at Koel Baai within the last hour or so. According to eye witness Matt Marais who had just left the water the shark attacked him 3 times. "The first time the bodyboarder fought back trying to get the board between him and the shark, the second time it pulled him under and the thrid time it was if somone pushed a button and the sea just turned red."
Matt, who has surfed Koel Baai for the last 19 years, said that shark sightings at Koel Baai have increased dramatically in recent months. "The surf conditions were pretty good with a 3-4 ft wedging wave and very clean water" added Matt, who also reports seeing 30-40 dolphins in the area prior to his session. "I thought it was a good sign, but it it turns out it wasn't for the bodyboarder who had only been in the water for about 10 minutes before he was attacked."
Debate has raged in the last week or so while the Ocearch filming project has been underway in False Bay with surfers and environmentalists up in arms over the way in which the permit to operate was issued with what appears to be very little thought to the possible consequences of the high concentration of chumming used by the crew. While the Ocearch project is no longer operating in the Bay locals are concerned that there is higher Greater White activity than normal as a result.
"People just need to know that there is a lot of shark activity here at the moment and please be careful!" stressed Matt who was understandably upset by the whole incident. theBOMBsurf extends its sincere condolences to the young man's family and friends (we can't name him because we are not sure if his family has been notified yet). We also urge ocean users in False Bay to be extra vigilant at this time.
Matt estimates that the shark was between 4-5m in length.

To the family:
May you have Jesus' peace as you deal with the loss of your son...
To the public:
It is a high possibility that this is because of the 5 tons of chum that was thrown into the water to lure more sharks in for the new National Geographic documentary being filmed in the false bay area.
Chumming should be illegal!!!!
ACTION:
Make yourself heard (not only on FB and Twitter) that we want chumming to STOP!
Write to the papers
Add comments on news websites posts
Speak to environmental authorities
We need stricter guidelines for shark cage diving!!!
NO CHUMMING SHOULD BE ALLOWED!!!

RIP dude.
When are they going to stop the shark cage diving boats too .... They chum just as much !!!!!. It's like going to the Kruger national park with your half a sheep just so you can see a lion or two. BAN SHARK CAGE DIVING - It habitulizes the animals - The as the problem we have with people feeding the baboons

This attack is very tragic but those people using the chumming method of attracting sharks were warned by the locals as to the dangers associated with it. But they being the scientists knew better as usual and with this outcome, now lets hear from them about this incident.they will as usual say it had nothing to do with chumming. As far as that dysfunctional Fisheries Department the less said the better.

Such a tragedy. Heartfelt condolences to all family and friends from all us here in KZN. R.I.P young man. Thoughts and prayers to family and friends.

I have read all your comments. All but a few agree that chumming is bad and should be banned. Shot, I have been saying this for years now. It definately changes the behaviour of Great Whites. It is making them used to Human beings. Do not tamper in anyway with our Great Whites. They never used to attack us. Since the advent of Shark Cage diving, it has been getting worse & worse. More incidents, more deaths. It has to be stopped,or the authorities or The Cage Divers should be held responsible for any further deaths. The damage is already done. It will take years of non interfereance to get the sharks un-habituated with humans. Bruce

14 Tiger Sharks trapped in Scottburgh nets today
18/04/2012
19 April 2012 - Update to yesterdays reports:
The beach at Scottburgh is still closed. The Natal Sharks Board could not send an aircraft up to identify where the slick has moved to if at all, due to inclement weather, but they will be doing so tomorrow.
Mike Anderson-Reid again confirmed that they sent NSB staff to the beach this morning but due to the prevailing westerly and the chop couldn't see the slick from the shore. "If we see the slick from the air tomorrow we'll get the boat to put a marker down and if we can actually locate the suspected whale carcass, we'll tow it out to sea."
No further captures in any other nets at the nearby beaches have taken place since yesterday, but the nets at Scottburgh will remain out the water and beach will remain closed until further notice.
NSB estimates that by 11.30am tomorrow they should be able re-open the beaches if they deem it safe to do so, but until then all surfers are urged to definitely not surf at Scottburgh or surrounds.
18 April 2012
All surfing and bathing at Scottburgh has been banned until further notice after 14 Tiger sharks were trapped in the shark nets just behind backline today.
Mike Anderson-Reid of the Natal Sharks Board confirmed in an interview with theBOMBsurf that 9 of the Tiger sharks were released alive and 5 of them died in the nets.
"We are cautioning all surfers to definitely not surf at Scottburgh until further notice. We suspect the Tigers were attracted by some kind of an oily slick on the surface, which we think is the remains of a whale carcass that they've been feeding on, but we won't know for sure until we put an aircraft up tomorrow and see exactly where the slick is."
Anderson-Reid confirmed that the incidence of the Tiger sharks was specific to Scottburgh, as no sharks were caught in the nets at Park Rynie, or anywhere else in the nearby vicinity.
"Please tell your readers to be careful, because these were sizable sharks, measuring 1.7 - 2.3m in length excluding the tails. If the guys want to surf the dawnie tomorrow, they need to stay well clear of Scottburgh and be extra vigilant if they surf the South Coast tomorrow. "
Of the 14 Tiger sharks trapped in the nets, 5 died, and were taken back to the Sharks Board for examination. Whale blubber was positively identified in the remains of the animals, leading the Shark Board to conclude that the slick is due to a decomposing whale carcass in the vicinity of the Scottburgh area.
The prevailing westerly winds, current and rain may mean that the suspected slick responsible for bringing the Tiger sharks inshore could move over the next few hours. The Shark Board have kept the nets out of the water at Scottburgh until such time as they can identify where the slick has moved to, as the safety of the bathers, surfers and sharks was paramount, hence removing the nets and banning swimming and surfing until further notice.

To all my fellow Greenpoint regulars. The dawnie was looking good for tomorrow but even I'm going to hang back for now. I have been surfing there for 35 years and have had many a session on my own but this is serious. its not as if theres one or two of these buggers around but 9. rather be safe. Winter is upon us and the waves will come. Dont be a hero and "maybe" get lucky. Its not worth it.

It is long past due that the Shark Nets are abolished.
We need to use BUBBLE CURTAINS -GUARANTEE SAFE BEACHES, and nothing gets hurt.
The principal behind shark nets is "kill everything, then we will be safe". Yes, they are wiping out the little that is left. Shark Nets do not work.

Imagine yourself in Twiggy’s ‘shoes’ - you’ve just caught a monster and life begins flashing before your eyes. Although you’re struggling to maintain focus on the epic feat at hand, time seems to stop and you wonder which is louder; the powerful slaps of water meeting board or the beat of your heart in overdrive? When catching the opportunity to prepare an interview for Mr. Taylor Steele, the grand-daddy and guru of surf cinematography, the feeling is not so different.
With titles such as Momentum I & II, Trilogy, Stranger than Fiction, Sipping Jetstreams, The Drifter, Castles in the Sky, and many other must haves, it's pretty clear that Taylor Steele is unarguably one of the greatest artists in the surfing world.
In an attempt to get beyond his head and into his heart, the big fish was fed some big questions; his humble responses being valuable lessons from which we can learn the importance of making our own choices and maintaining a balance, both on and off the board.
Upon visiting your website, we’re faced with the following brief background into Poor Specimen Productions:
“You’re a poor specimen, now get outside and do something productive!” yelled Pat Steele to a teenage Taylor. From that moment and the young age of 13, the Poor Specimen name and logo were put on every creative endeavor Taylor Steele experimented with. Whether it was a short film, claymation or surf movies made from VCR to VCR, all bore the name proudly.
You’ve won plenty of the most prestigious awards one could ever wish for, and you’re celebrated as one of the ten most influential persons in the surfing industry - if ever there was a point to prove, you’ve proved it. Was having a point to prove to others, primarily your father, your initial motivation to get to where you are, or is this something you’ve always aspired to?
Well yes and no. I think parental approval is something that myself or anyone always wants. I know it's in there on a certain level and I always want my parents to be proud, but I wouldn't say it's that motivation that has pushed me to where I am now. I am quite lazy if the work doesn't interest me. My father calling me a 'poor specimen' stems from that past laziness - I would lounge around the house as a teenager and do little besides go surfing. I know that for a while he was worried I would never find my way in the work place. Making films was different - I get an unlimited energy when working on them. I can work for days with little food and no sleep; just being focused on my goals. With something that doesn't interest me. I struggle to find the energy level to accomplish it.
When it comes to the idea of being a professional in the world of surfing, for many, no other life could be better. I’d bet that a fair majority of the people who’ve watched your films have convinced themselves that you’re living the ‘dream’. No doubt, it’s the escapist in us all that makes it easy to view the silver lining as your entire cloud. Of course, when considering it, there’s a lot of hard work and sacrifice that goes into doing what you do. You’ve definitely counted your fair share of sheep getting to where you are, but we wouldn’t be wrong in saying that now you’re ‘privileged’. So, would you say that it’s become easier to do what you do? And, are you living a dream?
My dream has always been to make surf movies and I am blessed that this has happened. It's hard work but easier than most work. I can never complain about my job as I feel it's exciting and it keeps me young since I am creating and problem solving. There are elements which aren't that fun, but all in all it’s a great gig. I enjoy my life but I have a rule, "Don't get too highs with the highs and don't go too lows with the lows." I try to keep it all in balance and live a simple life that is spent working, surfing, spending time with my family and traveling. That is the dream to me.
Considering actual dreams whilst asleep; do you mostly surf or film surfing?
Surf. I have had some of the best barrels of my life in my sleep.
Going back to aspirations and motivations; what do you aspire to now, and what is it that’s motivating you?
I am working on directing my first feature film outside of the surf world. I enjoy collaborating with friends on everything from fashion to music and commercials - whatever pushes me creatively and technically. I always have my surf projects though.
Often, artists (surfers most definitely included) use their art as a form of therapy. Do you?
I think it fulfills a creative drive and that is a kind of therapy. It's putting yourself to the task, and yes, it's rewarding if you can accomplish those goals. Surfing is my biggest form of therapy and release though, because I spend so much time on my projects and there's a lot of work involved which isn't purely creative.
Many artists find it important that their art contributes to society. You’ve given surfers the gallery through which to showcase some of their finest work, and in doing so, you’ve had an enormous impact on the surfing culture; turning it into more of a movement. You’ve introduced thousands of people to hundreds of bands, in turn, shaping their tastes and setting trends that extend beyond the surfing community. You’ve inspired people to travel and to experience ‘life’. Clearly, you’ve contributed to society in numerous ways. Is all this just a byproduct of the nature of what you do and how you manage to do it, or have you always consciously tried to give these things to society through your art?
I think you're being very generous with the impact you feel I have on surf culture and beyond. I really only lock into making something that I enjoy or inspires me but beyond that the effects are arguable both ways. I am consciously trying to make something that has a long lasting impression - which is harder in the ADD world we are growing towards. I have no aspirations on starting trends, however, if one of my projects has made someone happy or inspired them to travel or something, I am really stoked on that. I just met someone in Fiji who was in a wheelchair, and he told me that he watched Castles in the Sky every day until he'd recovered and could walk again. That blew my mind and I wanted to thank him more than he could thank me.
Most, if not all of your films have only featured male surfers. There are a number of excellent and professional female surfers around the globe; in fact, it could be said that the female ‘side’ of the surf industry is thriving. Have you ever considered doing a chick-flick so to speak?
Yes, I have been looking at including some girl surfers in my movies lately. What is good surfing? If they surf great then I will try to work with them. Right now, I feel that the level of some female surfers can't be denied. Carissa Moore and Steph Gilmore have really impressed me as just being great surfers - the fact that they are girls is awesome. I have been talking to them about working on some stuff.
You’ve explained, many times in the past, that music is a major part of your films. Undoubtedly, your talent for ascribing certain tracks to certain surfers and their rides is remarkable. What track do you envision Andy Irons surfing the clouds to?
‘Bro hymn’ by Pennywise.
When considering music, every song emanates different thoughts and feelings, not only through its beats and melodies, but through its lyrics too. How do lyrics serve your films?
Usually lyrics are pretty low on the priority for a song. To me, the music is the feeling of the moment; so it's all about how that song relates to the mood of the edit and visuals. I will place hundreds of songs in a rough edit until something stops me cold. It's obvious when it works.
Talking about lyrics; if you could choose one song to influence your daughters’ journey on the wave of life with, which would it be?
Well, we listen to music in our house all the time. For me to pick one song to guide them in life would be tough. My 4yr old loves Fleet Foxes and Edward Sharpe, and my 6yr old loves She & Him and Architecture in Helsinki. They’re also both addicted to Mozart. I think letting them pick their own song is the key to parenting, and they have a few songs of their own choice.
Last but not least; what question would you like to have been asked?
Does my family surf?
Yes, my mom surfed with me when she was 6 months pregnant. She still surfs on a short board every day. My dad also surfs on a short board every day. My brother was pro and on the cover of Surfing Mag - he's good at everything he does. My wife is a great surfer but she doesn't get out there very often. My 6yr old is hooked and rides a MR twin. My 4yr old surfed at age 1.5 but she prefers to catch sand crabs now. Surfing is a huge part of my childhood and current life.
Taylor, thank you for sharing your time and giving myself, as well as countless others, this awesome opportunity to get to know more about the life and mind of such a true legend and artist.
Mahalo.
Having been in contact with Taylor’s wife, Sybil, she let us in on a little secret – these are her words:
“One of my favorite things about Taylor is how much he gives back in time, advice and charity contributions via media support. He's very humble and understated about his contributions, yet you will find him all over the world - meeting with aspiring filmmakers, working on videos for low-income schools, orphanage videos, earthquake relief videos and the like. One thing he has done remarkably well is providing tools for people to improve their own circumstances, but you will never ever hear him talk about it!”
Sybil, thank you for your time, for your marvelous photographic contributions, as well as for letting us know that Taylor’s so much more than what one can assume. He is certainly a humble hero who most definitely does make the most of his artistic talents and time. What a legend!

Shark alert advisory – Muizenberg and surrounding False Bay beaches
National Geographic is filming its reality show “Shark-Men” with the assistance of researchers off Seal Island between the 10th – 30th April 2012. A permit to operate in the bay has been provided by Dr. Alan Boyd, Director of Biodiversity and Coastal Research – Environmental Affairs, without consultation of the local community.
In discussion with the Mr. Fisher (Fisher Productions/National Geographic) and his crew, up to 5 Tons (5,000 kg) of Tuna has been loaded, which is to be used for baiting and chumming. The use of possible whale meat or blubber has not been denied. This is in stark contrast to the local shark cage diving operators, which are limited to a maximum of 25 Kg of fish products per day.
The operating procedure for the capture of Great Whites includes actively attracting sharks to the ship and its support vessels, for scientists to select an appropriate “research” shark, which is then hooked, tired and exhausted to present less danger to the fishing crew and researchers, loaded on a submersible platform and raised out of the water. The shark remains on the platform for up to 20 minutes during which a number of tests are performed, including body cavity implants, blood sampling and a satellite tagging. After the various procedures are completed it is floated back into the water.
Whilst this is done under the ambit of “television research” with the blessing of Environmental Affairs and local researchers, serious concern arises from a number of issues.
The close proximity to Muizenberg, winds and currents may take the chum slick inshore. An increased number of White sharks may be attracted from outside the bay to the Seal Island area due to the active chumming operation over an extended period of time.
Captured sharks are exhausted, stressed and disorientated after their ordeal, some initial tracking data released of other areas, suggests that “post-surgery” sharks leave the immediate area. Due to Seal Island lying in a horseshoe shaped bay, sharks may end up near Muizenberg and other popular beaches.
This may lead to possible increased shark-human interactions. A sharp increase in the number of White Sharks may be noted during and after the filming has been completed, as these sharks, initially attracted by volumes of chum to the Seal Island area, find their way around the bay. The dispersal of a massive chum slick, given on-shore winds, may further increase the number of inshore sharks which cruise the chum slick in search of food.
I believe it to be prudent, and as a preventative measure, that a high shark alert is issued and maintained during, and for several days after, the filming activity. Unusual White Shark behavior and an increased presence and possible shark-human interaction or even attacks - cannot be excluded.
In the event of a shark attack, we need to question, who will be held accountable, Dr. Boyd for issuing the permit, National Geographic and Fisher productions for baiting and chumming, the researchers for supporting the project?
Concerns may be directed to the Director of Biodiversity and Coastal Research – Dr. Alan Boyd at email: ajboyd@environment.gov.za , or National Geographic tkelly@ngs.org, or dedelson@ngs.org
NB: This media release has been compiled by Dr Dirk Schmidt, a wildlife photographer and the author of two books on Great White Sharks.

I have observed that over the cosure of building a relationship with real estate proprietors, you'll be able to come to understand that, in every real estate transaction, a commission rate is paid. Eventually, FSBO sellers really don't save the percentage. Rather, they try to win the commission through doing a good agent's occupation. In the process, they invest their money along with time to execute, as best they will, the obligations of an realtor. Those responsibilities include getting known the home by marketing, introducing the home to prospective buyers, constructing a sense of buyer desperation in order to trigger an offer, scheduling home inspections, managing qualification investigations with the mortgage lender, supervising maintenance tasks, and assisting the closing.

You talk absolute emotional one sided sensationalism crap to the paper. GW's talk to each other--shark men chumming 5 ton slick --David taken as you warned--etc etc--GW having fun picnic day at fish hoek beach on a continuous basis --controversial all about money & ego -- self interest This stupid mentality is going to expose you & shark cage diving industry for what it is really trying to protect.

A least you are able to share these memories with your son. You can talk about what our oecnas were like before man decided the fate and future or should say non future of our ecology. The stupid bastards in washington that never talk or hang out with thier kids could never every comprehend the lose you will endore. Thier greed and lack of self couciousness is proof in itself. God's speed to all of us.

Could Broccoli be the latest in shark protection technology?

Conn Bertish tastes bad read the shark from below
Bertish tastes BAD!
Surfer, advertising maestro, eco terrorist, satirist and all round nice guy Conn Bertish managed to paddle around the 2 Oceans Aquariums predator tank unscathed to deliver his message of support for shark conservation. Conn was protected by nothing else but the new repellent , dubbed 'SharkBro' which so far according to his research and the results of Monday's presentation, have proven to be 100% successful. He did however admit to having had a poor night's sleep prior to his paddle in the shark tank but feels that perhaps it was pointless as his special paint using broccoli and asparagus extract proved to ward off the large ragged- tooth sharks in the predators tank. Conn's messages to the patrons present and the sharks in the tank with him, were painted on the bottom decks of his surfboards, using this secret recipe. The messages included TASTES BAD, 100% BROCCOLI, NOT A SEAL, VEGETABLE and DO NOT SWALLOW.
For more on this unique repellent device go to www.sharkbro.com or if you are in Cape Town visit The Toffie Festival this weekend at the Cape Town City Hall where the boards used for the device will be on display with Conn in attendance for questions and additional information.

OK, was this a late April Fool's joke? However, it is known fact that raggies are somewhat docile, so my challenge would be to test this newfangled product where it really matters - at Muizenberg corner with the Great Whites or at Port St Johns with the Zambezis - that will be the true testing ground.

Bertish has done some pretty funny stuff in the past, and I guess he was trying to be funny here but he completely missed this time. This comes across as pretty lame. Shark attacks are no laughing matter. He'll look like a real poephol now if he gets taken out by a shark now.

I'd like to see a seal decoy, painted with this stuff, been dragged behind a boat at Seal Island...then maybe.

Firstly, you have more chance of gettnig hit by a car or killed by a coconut falling on your head than gettnig attacked by a shark. A shark isn't going to pick you by what colour your boogie board is. Usually they attack people who have just gone to the toilet or are simply the unlucky ones. I think Mythbusters found that sharks are not attracted to certain colours but they tend to bite the colour yellow more once they do attack. Dont worry about them though, they aren't an issue! Just pick a cool bodyboard!
