Sihle and Sarah blow up, RIP Gary Drimie, No World Tour J-Bay event for 2013 and Anne Wright is a legend! |

Who Blew Up?

© Jon Ivins
Sihle Mbutho. This kid has been ripping away in the shadows for ages. He has the right kind of temperament for contest surfing where he seems to do his best surfing in heats. This weekend he took out the 2nd Umthombo contest ‘Kushay’gagasi’ on Saturday and walked away with R3K and a new wetsuit for his troubles. Not bad for a young man who had to reclaim his life from the streets!

Sarah Baum. Sarah absolutely dominated the woman’s event on Sunday at Dairy Beach, where she took out both the Pro JNR and the Open division in a devastating display of fast, powerful and radical surfing.

Anne Wright. Gosh we are lucky to have this woman as a part of KZN and SSA surfing. Anne is like a mom to half the kids on the Durban beachfront and is unbelievably generous with her time in the pursuit of keeping the grass roots of surfing alive and well. A seasoned and skilled contest organiser she somehow pulls all the strings together to make the events she presides over memorable occasions. She navigates the politics of the surfing industry and the various administrative agendas with good humour, all the while keeping an eye on what is important – cool events for the kids. This weekend she gave up both her Saturday and her Sunday to run 2 different events on the Durban beachfront. She was stoked because the kids were stoked. Anne Wright you are a legend!
Who Blew It?

The forces of the universe that took Gary Drimie away from us far too soon. It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of Gary Drimie. Gary was one of the first ever subscribers to theBOMBsurf, a fixture in the formative years of the New Pier who kept an eye on the likes of Wok, Jordy and Travis (and many others) as they were growing up and in recent years a transplant to J-Bay and the UAE. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP Big G, we’re sure gonna miss you man!

The ASP World Tour. Yup sad but true, no J-Bay World Tour event again next year. We all know times are tough, so we’re not pointing fingers at Billabong for not putting the event on. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it that is an economic reality and we’re grateful to Bong for all the years they did put it on, but seriously how can the ASP let the world’s best right hand pointbreak not be a part of the so called ‘dream tour’? This makes it 2 years in a row that there will be no World Tour event in SA, sad times indeed!

Everyone who did not re-subscribe to theBOMBsurf. Issue 16 is landing in post boxes all over SA as we speak and it is a cracker of an Issue. Don’t despair completely because a couple of the more hard core independent surf stores have been stocked with some extra copies and you may just be able to pick one off the shelf if you are quick. |

OURS, a creepy kid called Matt and a Doos of an arresting officer... |
| 18/11/2012 |
Who Blew Up?

Not many places you can drink good coffee as close to barrels like this
Ours. By Surfers, for surfers (and other interesting people). On Saturday a crew of local Kalk Bay Reef surfers opened “Ours” a restaurant and coffee shop in Kalk Bay, adding some cool salt water style to an already funky mix of venues that constitute the Kalk Bay vibe. Congratulations to Dave, Chris, Russ and their team for turning a dream into reality and opening up within spitting distance of the Reef itself. Situated opposite The Reef Car Park in Rosemead Road and next to the Kalk Bay Theatre you can delve into the awesome coffees, pastries and meals while you talk story about the sick pit you just had (or the one you are gonna get next time). If you are in the hood whatever you do don’t miss the chance to check it out.

Matt Pallet. We’ve known Matt for a long time. His easy going free flow personality makes him easy to be around. We once kidnapped him on an extended road trip from Mozambique through the Kei and only allowed him to ride an Alaia the whole time – but that’s another story. His mention this week goes for the latest instalment that he just dropped on ‘Innersection’. All we can say is sheeeowza! Not only has his surfing progressed in leaps and bounds and multiple airs since those Alaia kidnap days but his conceptual video production and editing are insane. If you haven’t yet seen his latest offering check this out for pure high performance creepy filth and some seriously spooky post production.

Greg left with brothers Chris and Conn
Greg Bertish. While we all know of Greg as the wave finding guru behind True Blue Surf Travel and the man with the really ‘hard’ job of testing all the waves he sends his clients to, he is also the kind of man who likes to give back. He’s been a pivotal component in the Shark Spotter program and recently he has been putting energy into http://www.all-heart.org where he has been helping ex surfers and lifeguards get back on to surfboards after extended spells out of the water. He is working with the heart and stroke foundation of South Africa and has some really cool initiatives lined up for 2013. Greg himself understands the challenges of what he is talking about, having undergone 2 serious heart ops himself and spent extended time out of the water as a result. Despite that he has bounced back and as theBOMBsurf can attest to first-hand, his performance (at possibly one of the most challenging waves you could ever hope to ride) in Namibia this year was an indication of just how far back he has bounced. If you or one of your loved ones is facing a serious cardiac issue, you may want to check out his site and connect with Greg. His ‘never, ever give up’ philosophy and love of surfing is an inspiration to us all!
Who Blew It?

Longtime North Beach Car Guard, Ian St Claire.
The Durban City Metro Police and the SAP. On Thursday last week at 11am the Durban Metro and the SAP ‘swooped’ and arrested 23 car-guards between The Beach Hotel and Suncoast Casino. They then locked them up for 24 hours in a cell designed to accommodate no more than 8-9 people and issued a grandiose statement about busting 30 ‘fake’ car-guards to the press. For 24 hours there was not even space for these guys to sit on the floor. They were released out of the back door of the CR Swart cells at 1pm on Friday. NO charges were laid and they were NOT even brought into court. They were told when they were picked up that they were being arrested because they did not have the required permits, despite having purchased their ‘official car-guard bibs’ from a police officer and being registered members of the North Beach Policing Forum. They are not salaried employees, they provide a community service at no fee unless you would would like to offer a gratuity... Huh? TheBOMBsurf knows of several metro police members who are upstanding and do their best to serve the community, so we DO NOT say that the entire metro police and SAP units are a bunch of lazy, disorganised, corrupt, incapable fools, but to the complete idiot who ordered this ‘swoop’ theBOMBsurf would like to point out the following: If it hadn’t been for the the brave and committed action of a small group of dedicated car-guards over the last decade or more the North Beach/Dairy node would not be what it is today. When surfers Derek Cook and Harry Bold first started working with Jean and Johan, the North Beach car park was a no-go-zone. It was a daily lottery wondering if your car would still be there when you got back from your surf or if you were destined for another trip to PG Glass to replace the smashed window... again. Get a life you unbelievable moron and leave our car-guards alone! Oh and by the way is that the scent of a ‘wrongful arrest’ case we smell brewing?

Anonymous online haters. In a world as small as ours, with as little time as we have on this planet, to assume some covert identity and suddenly grow balls bigger than Twiggy’s with your late night postings, where from behind the safety of your keyboard you burst forth with all kinds of meaningless macho innuendo do you have any idea of what a sad, pathetic little prick you are? Man up, put your name to your comments or go and post your vitriol somewhere else.

TheBOMBsurf ed
theBOMBsurf ed, publisher, tea-boy and pretty much anything else that needs done about the place, John McCarthy, finally got back in the water on a ‘real surfboard’ last week after playing the role of Janitor superbly well on a SUP for the last month or so. McCarthy managed to humiliate himself properly in front of the likes of Jake Oberholzer, Slade Prestwich, Davey Van Zyle and Heidi Palmboom with his numerous nose-dives, rail-catches and over-the-falls, all the while stoked out of his tiny mind to actually be catching (sort of) and riding (sort of) waves again under his own steam. |

RIP Errol, a 1.5M perlemoen bust and Grandfather Sunny still ripping. |
| 11/11/2012 |
Who Blew Up?

Errol Hickman. The very sad news of the passing of Errol ‘Tickbird’ Hickman was received at theBOMBsurf headquarters last week. Errol was an amazing surfer and shaper. He was part of the 1966 Springbok team, an inductee into the SA Surfing Hall of Fame and a highly skilled and prolific shaper of some of the best surfboards to ever be made in SA. He loved playing music and making surfboards. He was a humble and understated man and unquestionably one of the legends of SA Surfing. History will reflect that he was one of the founding fathers of SA surfing, both as an competitive athlete and for his contribution to the SA shaping gene pool. Our condolences go out to his family. RIP Errol. A memorial service for Errol will be held at Glenridge Church, Upper Level, Durban Station on Wednesday 14th November at 1:30pm. A surfers paddle honouring will be held thereafter, surfers to meet at North Beach at 3:30pm. Directions to the church: Turn into Durban station off Masabala Yengwe Avenue (NMR Ave) drive up the ramp between the electricity department and the bus station. At the top turn left. The Church is on the left.

Sunny Garcia. Previous ASP World Champion and current ISA World Masters Surfing Champion and new Grandfather (gulp yes you heard us right!) Sunny Garcia, dug deep to win the HIC Pro in overhead surf at Sunset Beach. The veteran competitor showed he still has what it takes to win in Hawaii by surfing through five rounds of gruelling heats on the final day to emerge victorious over Granger Larson, Greg Nakamura and Freddy P. Sunny’s win secures him a wildcard into the round of 64 for the first two events of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. This sets him up for an assault on a potential 7th Triple Crown title. He accepted his victory while holding his baby grandson who shares his name and thanked all of his supporters over the years who have enabled him to continue to surf for as long as he has.

The Bokke. At half time there is no question the collective psyche of the brandy drinking, boreworse eating rugby loving SA public was sitting on the edge of their chairs. The Irish came out swinging and by the end of the first half had instilled a little respect in perhaps a slightly belligerent SA approach. That said The Bokke ground out a win in the second half, leaving us all more relieved than elated. A win is a win though and we’ll take it!
And who blew it?

Don’t be on this list next week. Don’t blow it and forget to subscribe to theBOMBsurf magazine this week. Issue 16, Summer 2013 is at the printers and will be mailed out next week. From now on theBOMBsurf magazine is bi-annual and R100 gets you 2 Issues delivered to your door. If you subscribe this week you will also go into the draw to win a custom surfboard from the SA shaper of your choice. It is quick and easy, just click on the link. SUBSCRIBE HERE!

The Chinese National caught with R1.5M worth of Perlemoen in the back of his bakkie. While getting arrested a ‘friend’ arrived and offered the cops R10K to make the whole thing ‘go away’. Both suspects will appear in court next week on illegal possession of Abalone and bribery respectively. Lets hope they get properly nailed like that Rhino Poacher who got 40 years last week.

Those who missed out on the Holmes Bros/BOMBsurf collab T-shirt. A limited run of the collaboration between the Holmes Bros and theBOMBsurf is nearly completely sold out barely weeks after first arriving in store. If you are really quick you might still find one your size at one of the 3 Holmes Bros Stores (La Lucia, Cavendish, Rosebank). |

Who needs to do what to win... |

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International
ASP World Championship Tour 2012
ASP World Title Possibilities Heading into Season-Ending Billabong Pipe Masters
COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, November 7, 2012) – Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT), the O’Neill Coldwater Classic at Santa Cruz’s Steamer Lane, has been completed and won by Taj Burrow (AUS), 34. Heading into the final event of the season, the Billabong Pipe Masters, three surfers remain mathematically in contention for the 2012 ASP World Title: Joel Parkinson (AUS), 31, Kelly Slater (USA), 40, and Mick Fanning (AUS), 31. Due to the altered format for the Billabong Pipe Masters, all three surfers will automatically be seeded into Round 3 of competition and finish no worse than Equal 13th (1750 points). ASP WCT surfers’ year-end rankings are based off their top eight finishes from the 10 ASP WCT events in 2012. As Parkinson is the current rankings leader on the ASP WCT, the following ASP World Title scenarios will be based on his potential finishes at Pipeline. If Parkinson finishes 13th, 9th or 5th at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 5th or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline. If Parkinson finishes Equal 3rd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs a 3rd or higher to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.*
*Contingent upon Slater finishing 5th or Lower at Pipeline. If Parkinson finishes 2nd at the Billabong Pipe Masters:
- Slater needs to win at Pipeline to take the 2012 ASP World Title.
- Fanning cannot win the 2012 ASP World Title. If Parkinson wins the Billabong Pipe Masters, he will take the 2012 ASP World Title. The Billabong Pipe Masters, the third jewel of the Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing, will be run from December 8 – 20, 2012. For more information, log onto http://www.ASPWorldTour.com

Eddie would have invited Chris Bertish, Slater cools his heels in R2 and Knox schools the laaities. |
| 04/11/2012 |
Who Blew Up?

Issue 16
All of the contributors and advertisers to theBOMBsurf Issue 16. Now at the printers, the most beautiful and varied publication that we’ve ever put together awaits you, from mid to end November. Special mentions must go to Fred Pompermayer for the incredible cover sequence of Dorian getting spat out of a monster at Jaws, to Jon Ivins (our long suffering designer) who worked the deadline with a lung infection and to the boys at The Digital Stoke Distillery, Bryan and Jono for squeezing us in amongst their ‘real’ clients. Beauty, adventure, travel, intrigue and some alternative ways to ride waves all await you in this issue.

Taylor Knox
Taylor Knox. He schooled the laaites Julian ‘Claim’ Wilson and Alejo Muniz in Round One at Steamer Lane. The veteran campaigner showed he still has the street smarts required to cause problems for the younger guard by sending them both into the cut-throat reality of R2. A sober experience for Mr Wilson fresh of his victory in Portugal no doubt.

Nat Young
Nat Young. It is not often you get to beat Kelly Slater in a heat, but the 21 year old winner of the trials proved he has the BMT to operate in the big Leagues by getting one over The King and prodigy Kolohe Andino. We’ll see how he goes in R3, but at this point he has nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Who Blew it?

Dusty Payne
Slater. Woops a R1 loss to a local wild card is gonna upset Kelly for sure. His margin for error just got dramatically reduced. That said Slater is gnarly when he is in a corner. He now goes up against Jason Collins another local wildcard in R2. Kelly can’t let Joel get away from him here, so this is a heat he desperately needs to win to stay in the game.

Mick Fanning and the pumpkin man
Mick Fanning. Mick’s World Title campaign took another beating in R1, this time at the hands of the re-emerging young Hawaiian, Dusty Payne. Mick needs to regroup, win his next heat and go on to win the event if he is to have a realistic shot this year.

Eddie would have invited Chris Bertish...
The selectors to the Quiksilver Eddie event. While we laud the inclusion of John John into the line-up of invited surfers and can’t wait to see him in some solid juice, and we are stoked to see Twiggy cracked the nod again, we’re left scratching our heads at the exclusion of Chris Bertish. Yes he is an alternate along with long time Waimea charger Andy Marr, but seriously how the selectors can not include Chris Bertish, the reigning Mavericks Champion has left us scratching our heads. |
