Parko wins the World Title and Pipe Masters, a python in The New Pier Lineup and some very dirty water in Durban. |

Who Blew Up?

Joel Parkinson. There are not many people who win both The Pipe Masters and The World Title in the same hour. Kelly’s done it, Andy did it and now Parko has done it. I think the majority of the surfing world are properly stoked for Parko and so they should be. He has always been an incredible surfer, but this World Title is somehow the validation of an amazing career. Ever the consummate professional, he kept his head down and did the job one heat at a time displaying amazing BMT. He managed the pressure perfectly and he was also lucky that Slater was wave starved in his heat against Josh Kerr, but that is surfing. Parko is the champ and that ladies and gentlemen is all she wrote.

Josh Kerr. What a run Josh had in the Pipe Masters. Seriously injured (he was sent to hospital for scans after a bad wipe out) he soldiered on bravely putting his body back on the line wave after wave. His defeat of Slater in the semis was a seminal moment in the history of professional surfing. To end up in the final against Joel was an amazing result. Hopefully he liked the feeling of being in the final because it would be great to see more of him at that end of the draw on next year’s tour.

Dan Redman. Dan beat Shaun Joubert, Greg Emslie and Wayne Monk in the finals of the Guido’s Surf Classic in Port Alfred, taking home R4K for his efforts. Port Alfred is an amazing little town and it is great to see the event go from strength to strength in it’s second year. Congrats to Dan for winning it and to all those involved in making it happen.
Who Blew it?

The New Pier locals had a tough time with wildlife in the surf last week. You can imagine the surprise of of the surfers when they saw a live python swimming through the lineup. Authorities believe that the massive amount of rain and the flooding in KZN recently probably caused the large snake to be washed down one of the rivers. The snake was rescued from the lineup before it or any of the surfers got hurt. Then just as the surfers were recovering from that a big shark, believed to be a Zambezi, swam through the lineup. Yikes what’s next?

John McCarthy. John was in Cape Town last week and lucked into a beautiful west swell while he was there. On the first day of the swell, just as the tide and wind were perfect, he rushed off from where he was staying drove all the way to the beach, frothing so hard to get in the water. When he finally got to the beach he realised in his haste he’d forgotten his wetsuit at home... Eish!

Transnet Port Authorities in Durban. Transnet Port Authorities should be dragged over the coals for letting this mess accumulate in the harbour. The scary part though is that this daily and is close to the very water Durban surfers and beach users use daily.
