Big Cash for Surfboard Art, a dark horse on the loose at Pipeline and a very naughty Labrador.

Who Blew Up?

The Wavescapes Art Auction. These guys raised R234,000 to go to the NSRI, Shark Spotters and the HIV awareness project Waves For Change. All we can say is WOW! Aside from providing a platform for the surfing and art worlds to meet, raising that sum of money is an extraordinary achievement. TheBOMBsurf applauds the artists, the buyers and Wavescape for an amazing event. Notably Brett Murray’s (of The Spear fame) board pictured here sold for R42 000!

Richard Hambloch. Tonight many of you in Cape Town will get to see The Goddess Islands movie for the first time. Rich has been integral to the production of the movie. He shot most of the action footage, all of the links and he edited the entire project. What is truly remarkable though is that he did this all at night after already working a full day in his real job... Huge credit for this production needs to go to this man.

Kalani Chapman. Kalani won both his R1 and R2 heats convincingly in solid waves at the Pipe Masters, taking out Tiago Pires in R1 and Ace Buchan in R2. Those are 2 pretty big upsets in the event and with Jamie O’Brien out courtesy of some great surfing by CJ Hobgood Kalani must now be the underdog favourite and dark horse to continue to lead the trialist charge against the seeds.

Who Blew It?

Jamie O’Brien. As a former Pipe Master’s Champion and guy who lives in front of the the fabled break Jamie O made a huge mistake in his R2 heat against a very hard charging CJ Hobgood. With 60 seconds to go, holding down priority and only needing a low to mid range 6, O’Brien paddled over a cooker, leaving it to CJ and then the ocean went flat...

Kona. Kona is a 6 year old female juvenile de Labrador who belongs to theBOMBsurf ed John McCarthy. On Sunday morning when all the Durban families congregate down at Vetches Beach Kona usually runs amok robbing small children of their sandwiches and flicking sand onto tanning bodies while barking loudly at anyone and everyone and wagging her tail madly. She LOVES the ocean and the beach, but this weekend embarrassed her owners properly by deciding to relieve her self (we’re talking a major no 2 here) right in the shorebreak amongst all the swimming children. The exodus that followed looked like a scene from JAWS and was followed by much finger pointing and muffled laughter causing the entire McCarthy clan to slink of the beach in disgrace.

The City of Durban. After most of the showers on the Durban beachfront packed up The City finally sent someone round to fix them. It must be noted that while the majority of the upgrade has been a huge success the shower story is one long story of woe. When the upgrade took place, the old brass showers which had withstood decades of abuse were removed and in their place fancy new push button devices were installed. These of course broke down within a matter of months. Que the contractor laughing all the way to the bank because he’s been back several times since 2010 to repair and re-install them. Anyone want to bet on how long this latest round of repairs is going to last?
