Who Blew Up?

Sihle Mbutho. This kid has been ripping away in the shadows for ages. He has the right kind of temperament for contest surfing where he seems to do his best surfing in heats. This weekend he took out the 2nd Umthombo contest ‘Kushay’gagasi’ on Saturday and walked away with R3K and a new wetsuit for his troubles. Not bad for a young man who had to reclaim his life from the streets!

Sarah Baum. Sarah absolutely dominated the woman’s event on Sunday at Dairy Beach, where she took out both the Pro JNR and the Open division in a devastating display of fast, powerful and radical surfing.

Anne Wright. Gosh we are lucky to have this woman as a part of KZN and SSA surfing. Anne is like a mom to half the kids on the Durban beachfront and is unbelievably generous with her time in the pursuit of keeping the grass roots of surfing alive and well. A seasoned and skilled contest organiser she somehow pulls all the strings together to make the events she presides over memorable occasions. She navigates the politics of the surfing industry and the various administrative agendas with good humour, all the while keeping an eye on what is important – cool events for the kids. This weekend she gave up both her Saturday and her Sunday to run 2 different events on the Durban beachfront. She was stoked because the kids were stoked. Anne Wright you are a legend!

Who Blew It?

The forces of the universe that took Gary Drimie away from us far too soon. It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of Gary Drimie. Gary was one of the first ever subscribers to theBOMBsurf, a fixture in the formative years of the New Pier who kept an eye on the likes of Wok, Jordy and Travis (and many others) as they were growing up and in recent years a transplant to J-Bay and the UAE. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP Big G, we’re sure gonna miss you man!

The ASP World Tour. Yup sad but true, no J-Bay World Tour event again next year. We all know times are tough, so we’re not pointing fingers at Billabong for not putting the event on. If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it that is an economic reality and we’re grateful to Bong for all the years they did put it on, but seriously how can the ASP let the world’s best right hand pointbreak not be a part of the so called ‘dream tour’? This makes it 2 years in a row that there will be no World Tour event in SA, sad times indeed!

Everyone who did not re-subscribe to theBOMBsurf. Issue 16 is landing in post boxes all over SA as we speak and it is a cracker of an Issue. Don’t despair completely because a couple of the more hard core independent surf stores have been stocked with some extra copies and you may just be able to pick one off the shelf if you are quick.

Hi mark your mag should be waiting for you at the surf hq later this week if not already. We mailed all the mags last week. If you still have 3 mags remaining on your subscription you will be covered untill the start of 2014. Make sense?

Hey John, am a subscriber and regular visitor to the site. Used to be a regular blog/update from various regions in the country, which you don't seem to do anymore. Seemed to stop when site layout changed, so maybe I'm missing it somehow? Anyways, was pretty entertaining and was wondering if any chance it coming back in future?

As one of the old school, I will be sad not to receive the quarterly hard copies. Best wishes to all for the festive season & the future.

I was searching YouTube for a placituarr beet salad recipe and came across yours. I've spent the last 1/2 hour watching all your videos here. I love that you have a video to go with the instructions and recipe. I'm a very visual person and it helps so much to see what I'm supposed to do and what the recipe is supposed to look like. I will be trying out all the food recipes you have here. In fact, I already have my dough for the #12 pizza in an old breadmaker which had to be dusted off and brought back to the kitchen from the store room! My only complaint would be that I wish there were more recipes! (and that the lighting is a bit dark in places).I look forward to more posts!

I agree, a great post and a great reminder. It reimnds me of advice that one of my mentors gave me over 15 years ago: Greg, when you take care of the minutes, the hours will take care of themselves. And here's another quote relating to this that I've heard that I like: Inch by inch, life is a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard. college application personal statement
