Huge Balls, some skill and a couple of inches. |
| 14/10/2012 |
Who Blew Up?
Shane Dorian. If you haven’t yet watched the clip of Shane Dorian getting shacked at Jaws do yourself a favour and watch the balls, commitment and skill of this man as he rides through a heaving, spitting cathedral of a barrel. Shane Dorian just did what every big wave surfer dreams of doing and in the process upped the ante considerably. Bravo man, what an unbelievable ride!
Keala Kennelly. This chick has been through some heavy shit. Her pounding and subsequent lacerations at Teahupoo last year you would have thought might have tamed her approach somewhat, but it hasn’t. Her performance paddling in to Jaws the other day was astonishing to say the least. She doesn’t just paddle in, she pulls in... All we can say is RESPECT!

Bianca Buitendag. She didn’t win, but she finished runner up in Bali at the ASP World JNR event sponsored by Oakley to Niki Van Dijk. What a year for Bianca and despite not wining the event it rounds off an incredible year for the teenager from Vic Bay.
Who blew it?
Jordy. His round 2 exit from the Rip Curl Pro is a disaster for Jordy as it accelerates the un-ravelling of an already shaky year. Jordy is one of 6 guys in the world currently that have the talent to be World Champions and one of them is not even on tour. The others are Slater obviously, Mick, Joel and John-John, yet Jordy is not even near striking distance at the moment. To make matters worse he is not surfing badly, he is actually surfing well. He’s had close calls go the other way, he’s been robbed a couple of times, he has been unlucky. He is losing in micro- measurements, a fraction here a fraction there... He’s losing by inches a little bit at a time. Jordy has two options at this point in the year. Option 1. To fold as he cruises into Hawaii. It is clear the judges don’t want to see him succeed. Despite the WAGs and kids in the competitors area don’t be fooled by the friendly demeanour of Kelly Slater and his cronies. There is a lot on the line and sure as hell they don’t want to see him succeed either. With him out of the picture he’s just one less worry in an already stressed out game. The media don’t want to see him succeed, it’s not his turn... Huh? Ja, John-John is the golden child (for now) and Slater is on a roll... If Jordy allows self pity in the door now he is toast, not just this year but moving forward as a world title contender. So much for option 1. This brings us to option 2. He gets spitting, hissing mad. He has to make a stand before the year end and the only way he can do this is to up his game immediately, grab the tour by the scruff of the neck and start destroying heats one crazy wave at a time. He needs to get himself back in the game one inch at a time and as Al Pacino says in ‘Any Given Sunday’, he has to be prepared to “tear himself and everyone else around him to pieces for that inch.”

Pat Gudauskas. To get knocked out of the event with the second highest heat score of the day sure has to be a bummer, especially as it is only in R2. This is exactly what happened to Pat Gudang as he scored a breath-taking 17.73 in his R2 heat. The only problem was that Ace Buchan clocked an amazing 18.50 to take out the win. When the next highest heat score in the event on that day was as 16.17 (posted by Mick Fanning in his victory over Pierre-Valentin Labo) that has to hurt!

The City of Durban (again). The recent rains that have brought the KZN farmers much spring joy have also resulted in the storm drains and rivers around Durban pouring out onto the golden miles beaches. The result? In a word – plastic, and lots of it! Saturday morning saw a literal tide (like a Bluebottle or Jelly Fish invasion) of plastic being washed up along Durban’s beachfront... Durban beach goers and surfers tried to avoid it but is was sickening.
