1. Bianca Buitendag - Bianca’s 3rd place result at the Colgate Plax Girl’s Pro in Rio signals her intention to be a contender on tour and not just a participant. Surfing with a combination of maturity and flair the talented Southern Cape Goofy Footer had a blinder of an event. This performance will no doubt increase her confidence levels, as well as scare her competition, and we look forward to more great results as she builds on this momentum.

2. Shaun Joubert - Great leaders lead from the front. As Captain of the SA Team, Shaun did just that throughout the entire ISA World Games in Panama. On the final day when the moment arrived to bring out the BMT, that is exactly what the man did. Keeping cool but rising to the challenge he won the Open Men’s Gold Medal and in the process helped Team SA to take out the win. We applaud you sir! Also to the entire Team SA at The ISA World Surfing Games in Panama. They all surfed their hearts out and gave it 100%. What a great performance from the SA Team and what a great victory for South Africa. Well done to you all.

3. Slade ‘The Blade’ Prestwich - In a closely contested final, he took out the VQS event in cooking waves at The New Pier over the weekend. The lanky natural footer who has been in devastating form recently wins an all expenses paid ticket to the final VQS event in Fiji. If he wins that he is into the main WT event... What a prize to win and what an opportunity for The Blade! If you want to see more of this guy surf go check his site http://sladeprestwich.azurewebsites.net/.
Who Blew It?

If you were in KZN on Sunday and didn’t go surfing you blew it properly! The whole day fired along the entire coastline with endless options as the first real winter groundswell brought stiff offshore winds, long ropey tubes and lines stacked to the horizon. What a day of surfing!

Billabong buyout talks - After some hope was created by former Billabong head, Paul Naude’s take over bid has hit the rocks. This means more delays, more confusion and a share price of 45.5 cents! Can you believe that in 2007 Billabong shares traded at US$17, that is a 97% reduction... Holy smoke. The stock price has now been suspended from trading until the company makes an announcement about a possible transaction.

Whoongas Dealers - Drugs in impoverished communities are always a problem. Sadly it seems the scourge of urbanised areas around Durban like Chatsworth and The Point area in Durban, known as Whoongas (HIV medication mixed with Heroin or Marijuana ground up and smoked) has reached some of the poorer rural communities recently. Over the last 5 years surfers and rural dwellers in the Mfasazana area, which is home to The Spot and several other great waves, have been getting along really well. This has been jeopardised recently by a wave of whoonga fuelled crime that has swept through these communities. The kids hooked on this stuff feel nothing to break into your car or rob you, so please exercise caution if you are thinking about heading into any of these areas. |

Brushes with the law, a bad body double, the assassination of a crocodile and lots more. |

Who Blew Up?

Neville - Neville of "Gardian Angels" at the North Beach parking passed away on Sunday morning and will now be keeping a safe eye on his beloved turf from above. We will remember Neville for his morning banter and the safe keeping of our keys while we enjoyed our surf. Rest In Peace Neville.

MTN - As a lovely follow up to the Brett Archibald story it was brought to our attention that MTN have stepped in to cover the cost of JM’s cell phone bill. As we all know JM was instrumental in directing coms off his cell while the search was underway, so his R13K bill would have stung a bit had it not been for the service provider stepping in. What a cool thing for MTN to do!

James Taylor - Better known for his hell man antic in huge waves, James is currently in the drydock for a while with a damaged foot. Not able to surf himself instead last Saturday he spent the day up on the hill in Kommetjie taking pics of his mates. We reckon he nailed this one perfectly of Mickey Duffus on a cooker! You can check out more of James’s photography at http://fancamsite.com/category/fc-examples/
Who Blew It?

Michael Tomson - Last week wasn’t a great week for the Gotcha founder and 70’s hell charger Mike Tomson. He was arrested for DUI and drugs after crashing his car in Laguna Beach. He posted bail at a USD$100 000, but he’s going to need a good lawyer to stay out of the lock up because the yanks take that shit seriously.

Durban Wildlife Officials - For 4 years a little croc has been living quietly on the banks of the Umgeni River. Though it has been sighted often by canoeists and golfers it has never bothered anyone as it goes about its business. Unable to capture the croc, the wildlife officials simply shot it dead. Did they really try that hard to capture it? Sad that man’s response is to kill so quickly. Shame on you guys.

The Body double used by Chanel 7 Australia News. They used a ‘fat bastard’ to re-enact the scenes of Brett Archibald treading water, not sure that Brett really cares but it’s pretty lame all the same. Still the video is worth a watch. **video may have been removed/disabled** http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10152816315490354&set=vb.669890353&type=2&theater

Metallica Blows Up, Duffus and Olivier go large and a poor dude get seriously beaten. |
| 29/04/2013 |
Who Blew Up?

Metallica - Metallica rolled into Cape Town last week and contrary to regular rock star behaviour chilled out, went surfing and were generally low key - until their gigs anyway. Those were different affairs entirely. The hardened rockers put on a show so tight and full of energy they brought down the house at all of their gigs. If you want to see real passion go to a Metallica concert. The crowd love them and they love doing what they do and they are damn good at it.

Micky Duffus - Mickey Duffus is over 50 years old yet he is still a complete standout at heaving Sunset. On Saturday Mick had half a dozen of the best waves out there, but he also scored the two waves of the day. He swung the hammer on the apex of the peak and charged down two monsters in the process. Respect!

Robin Olivier - Robin doesn’t get to surf as much as he’d like. He’s the major domo at Digicape (theBOMBsurf’s preferred supplier of all things Mac related) which keeps him on his toes, in boardrooms and airports more than on the beach. That said on Saturday he paddled out at Sunset with his brother, Frans. When he got out to the back he had a couple of warm ups and then dropped into an absolute mother of a wave. Thereby setting a great example to the rest of us on how to charge hard and be successful in business.

Unknown goofy at Sunset - There was a goofy riding a red board at Sunset on Saturday who very nearly went to his maker. We’re not sure if he was inexperienced or just having a very bad day out. He paddled for a wave lay down half way through the drop, finally he wobbled onto one knee with absolutely no control at all before being obliterated by the lip which landed on his head. It was horrendous to watch and we can only speculate what it must have felt like. We can confirm he surfaced and headed directly in after that beating. Dude, you are lucky to still be alive!

Capetoniains who didn’t surf on Saturday - Surely one of the most beautiful swells in recent years to hit The Mother City. The super long period swell combined with almost windless conditions meant the options were endless. The big waves boys drank their fill at Dungeons and Sunset, but all the nooks and crannies were firing too. If you were in CT and you missed it, you blew it properly!

Anyone who missed Metallica - It is not often you get to go to a performance of this nature. If you missed out you could probably try and make yourself feel better by going to see Justin Bieber, but we somehow doubt that will make you feel better. |

There are heroes all over the place this week on the BMT. |
| 22/04/2013 |
Who Blew Up?

image © Jeff Vidler
1. Brett Archibald : “Cometh the moment, cometh the man”. 27 hours adrift in the Indian Ocean. Sharks swimming past, stung by Jellyfish, seagulls wanting to pluck your eyeballs out while you ponder the meaning of life. Try drowning a couple of times, realise you are not really that into it. Have a little pep talk to yourself and wonder how you are gonna catch one of those damn gulls, rip it’s head off and drink it’s blood... So you can stay alive, see your wife and kids again and god willing still get to surf Playgrounds before the season is done. This is the story of legends. This is why the BMT was invented. Hollywood couldn’t invent a story better than this. To have a wingman as eloquent and Gung-ho as JM, I mean seriously who will ever forget these words “ I believe that Archie is strong enough mentally and physically to survive the night in the sea if he hasn’t already been picked up a local fisherman in a small boat or something similar. Please say a Prayer for Brett for strength...and for all of us. If he can keep going we WILL find him.” Seriously, stand back Bruce Willis, these guys are the real deal.

2. Chantal Malherbe and all at All Aboard Travel : “Cometh the moment, cometh the wo-man...” OK seriously how many service businesses do you know that have the kind of insight, expertise and connections required to save your life on some far off shore? The behaviour of these guys through this entire episode is beyond exemplary. Talk about taking responsibility, initiating sensible action and following through. To be able to mobilise the bulk of the Mentawiis charter business to drop what they are doing at a moment’s notice and go and look for your missing client is extraordinary and a testament to the care and professionalism of this outfit. If we could hand out medals we’d be handing them to these guys. Respect! If you haven’t yet read the anatomy of a rescue on wavescape check it out to see what we mean. http://www.wavescape.co.za/news/breaking-news/diary-of-a-sea-rescue.html.

3. Doris : “Cometh the man who sounds like a wo-man but is actually a dinkum Aussie skipper”. This is the man who found Brett Archibald. The interview taken off the Stab Website is priceless. If you haven’t read it yet we’ll offer you a teaser. “Stab: How long did you search for?
Doris: I got the call at 12:30pm, and it was 6:55am the following day when we found him. I collected the guy at 6:55 and I cracked a Bintang at 7:02.” for the rest of the interview go to http://stabmag.com/as-the-true-world-thunders-by/
Who Blew It?

Brett Staegeman : Brett is one of the organisers of the now very well known Ross Taylor Memorial surf contest. To cut a long story short Brett has been in serious training recently in anticipation of heading north from his beloved Wilderness area in The Southern Cape to sample some warm water delights. His session last week was cut short by a brutal wipe-out which ruptured his eardrum, was followed by a 2 wave hold down and nearly resulted in him drowning. In true Southern Cape Style he went to the doc in Knysna who took one look at the hardy southerner and said “ you’ll go surfing anyway. Just plug your ear with cotton wool and Vaseline and come and see me when you get back...”. Ja they do breed them tough down there.

Mark Shepperson : Former BOMBsurf web guru Mark Shepperson had a gnarly experience recently when the tip of his surfboard smashed him in the face and damn near ripped out one of his eyes in the process. You can read Sheppo’s full account here but in the meantime you may want to rethink that whole nose guard thing...

The Indonesian Government : Despite repeated attempts and lobbying from several sectors, most vociferously from the All Aboard crew these lazy beaurocrats sat on their fat arses and did jack shit to save Brett Archibald’s life. Shame on you all! |

The SA Masters bring home The Bling, a Pommy Surfer seizes the day, The Sharks get Eaten and some unfortunate souls get pounded. |

1. The SA Masters Team - 2 Golds, one to The Foot and the other to Knutto and then 2 Silvers, one to Andre Malherbe and the other to Fergie ensures that the SA Masters team remains a global force in surfing. No SA team has come even close to the bling tally that the ballies have racked up since they started competing in the ISA World Surfing Games. Our JNRs would do well to study the approach of these guys who all not only rip, but know how to put it together in a contest when it counts. Congratulations team SA, you have done us proud!

Team SA thanks all their supporters big and small : image © ISA
2. All those who helped to get The Masters to the ISA World Surfing games in Ecuador. It was a close run thing with team SA nearly not even getting a start due to funding difficulties. Well done to every single person who in whatever way helped the team to get to the event to compete. As you can see your efforts and contribution have been richly rewarded.

3. Llandudno Pommy Surfer Dude - On Friday last week after a good blast of SE wind had cooled the Atlantic seaboard waters nicely an English beginner was spotted having an absolute ball on one of those soft learner longboards. While the rest of the surfers huddled in to their booties and hoodies he revelled in the brisk offshore conditions. Caught behind the section, pitched over the falls consistently dropped in on and you still couldn’t wipe the smile off his face. Oh ja and he surfed for over an hour in boardshorts. When asked where he was from he replied, “London mate, going home temorra, gotta make the most of it eh...” You have gotta love that spirit, Carpe Diem brother!
Who Blew It?

The Sharks - Ja well we don’t really want to talk about that. What a shocker.

These hard charging but ultimately unlucky souls. 5 of the most crazy wipe-outs you’ll ever see.

The nay sayers on The SA Masters Team and the sad fact that despite being the most successful surfing team in the history of SA Surfing these guys still struggle to get funding to go to events. The example they set is exemplary and they should be held up as role models to our youth. |
