Clay Marzo launches into Carves

27/02/2012

Clay Marzo announced today that he is teaming up with the international eyewear brand Carve. theBOMBsurf caught up with Carve's man in South Africa, Noel Rahme to chat about this significant signing and the emergence the brand in the South African and global surf markets. .

Noel, why is Clay Marzo such a significant signing for Carve?

This was a great move for Carve, signing Hawaiian Clay Marzo who has to be one of the most radical and talented surfers on the planet. The kid is hot property and has reached iconic status with fans around the world and we are excited to have his involvement and participation in growing our brand.

Carve is a new brand in SA - what makes it different and why do you think South Africans will like the brand?

Australia leads the fashion trends in surfwear design and eyewear, Carve originated in Sydney in 1998 and has recently been voted by ASB (Australian surfing business) magazine as the hottest surf eyewear brand in Oz. When it comes to style South African's are definitely in tune with what's hot and Carve is on the money when it comes to style and design. Quality eyewear no longer has to break your bank balance, Carve has a range of eyewear that is affordable and simply has something in its range for everyone.

What's the coolest thing about Carve?

I think the name is really cool,  it's powerful..everyone wants to be up on a rail Carving.

The brand was born in Oz and is now launching aggressively in SA, North America and Hawaii - why do you think it's got such rapid growth potential?

The time is perfect, with the slow economy, for Carve's competitively priced products and awesome styles. All of our research and feedback, from those in the industry, shows a strong demand for Carve to enter these markets. USA has signed Sunny and now Clay giving the brand major credibility. I bet retailers in USA  must be frothing to get the brand in their doors before summer rolls in and Carve it up!

Thanks Noel. Check you in the water.

Noel slots in to a solid one between work. © Cestari.

Dear BluJazz,I am putting all my focus right now on the BluJazz Artist Fest at the Jazz Showcase next week (1/13 1/16/2011). The Grilly Brothers Sextet has the oinurtoppty to join with some of the finest jazz artists in the Mid-West: Guitarists Paul Kogut & Doug MacDonald, the Ron Di Salvo Piano Trio and Jazz Violinist Diane Delin's Octagon. To be honest not only am I a bit humbled but I am also a bit charged by a dose of anxiety. This will be my first public performance since I have officially declared myself a full-time professional musician. Up until a few month ago I have been rotting away in front of a computer housed in many a corporate cubicle throughout Chicagoland. For the past 40 years I have been semi-professional meaning that if I didn't like playing with some group I could go and tell them to kiss my royal band wagon . And, if I didn't feel like practicing after working all day, I could watch Racheal Madow instead. Now I have no excuses. After practicing 5 hours a day (last Tuesday), I should be able to keep up with the rest of the band and play the correct notes (when required). I should also be able to stay up past midnight like a true jazz musician. (Normally, I retire at 9pm after an 8 oz. glass of skim milk served at room temperature). So, the jazz scene is something I have been avoiding since bombing out at Benchely's on Broadway on a cold January Saturday night 30 years ago in 1981. There, I was accused of being strictly a horizontal player and not addressing the changesproperly at all times. A manic episode followed and I told my own band to kiss my hot bari . Now, 30 years later, after studying with some of the greatest jazz teachers and being full rehabilitated from an acute narcissistic personality disorder,I have returned to the jazz scene with a vegetarian vengeance. Not only I am co-leader of one the most entertaining jazz groups on the block, but I am also encouraged to play more horizontally and let the changes address you . My band colleagues now know that if they complain about my approach to jazz improvisation not only do they risk being fired but would have to live with the guilt of criticizing the harmonically retarded .See you at the Jazz Showcase 1/13-1/16Dave GrillySaxophonist and Co-Leader of the Grilly Brothers Sextet

Gotcha Weekend Warrior Special at Surf HQ

24/02/2012
The Surf HQ down at 65 Sylvester Ntuli Road (aka Brickhill rd) have come up with an awesome package for the Weekend Warriors out there....

No Weekend Warriors were hurt in the making of this epic.

theBOMBsurf and Weekend Warrior, Hardy Van Zyl, a 35 year old Sales Executive from the Berea went to investigate the latest offering from the Surf HQ.

Charl Tostee who runs the store met us and explained the principle behind the idea.  "The Gotcha Weekend Warrior Special is a complete package designed to get the Weekend surfer in the water quickly, with everything taken care of for a good price. The boards have been specifically designed for guys like Hardy here, who want a one-stop shop and good value for money".

We met Peter Lawson, the shaper behind the Gotcha Weekend Warrior boards at the Surf HQ to chat about the design principles. "The Gotcha Weekend Warrior boards are made for the average surfer and are designed to help these guys catch a lot of waves. They are aimed at the guys who don't have enough time to surf every morning or every evening, so when they do surf they can catch waves pretty easily and have a lot of fun. They've been the best sellers in the shop for the last 2 summers."

"The Gotcha Weekend Warrior boards eliminate the length that average surfers are usually pushed into. Big guys who are up to 110kgs, who are a little unfit can go down to a 7'2 and can find it quite easy to catch waves. The guys who are fitter, but don't surf often can go down to a 6'0 or a 6'2, ride lots of waves, have an easy ride and have a lot of fun as their surfing progresses."

So what did the Weekend Warrior test pilot, Hardy have to say?

"I really liked this Gotcha board. I normally ride a 6'4 and this board was a 6'2 but with a lot more volume through the board. It was really easy to paddle and it was lots of fun to ride. Besides the board itself, I got everything else I needed in one go and the service from Charl and Peter was awesome. Thanks guys, and thanks theBOMBsurf for choosing me to test this. I learned a lot about what I should actually be riding and I'm sure other guys like me will benefit from this alot. "

Bloodscan

22/02/2012
I was in JBay a few weeks ago and came across this flyer:

The first thing that I thought was "What an awesome name for an event - I can't believe no-ones used that before! " and my second thought was "Hmmm, that's an interesting title sponsor - I wonder what Bloodscan is?"

So I decided to go and find out:

Bloodscan have become involved in Surfing by sponsoring the BloodScan Africa Surf Series 2011 and also supports Junior EP surfers Emma Smith and Steven Sawyer.

“We picked surfing,” says BloodScan Africa Surf Series 2011 and BLOODSCAN EUROPE Managing Director Lewis Khoury, “because it’s an outdoors, health and wellness orientated activity that’s easily accessible to anyone living on the coast. It has low cost barriers to entry, all kids need is a surfboard and they are able to adopt a lifestyle that yields significant health and opportunities benefits.

Next time you're in JBay, go and check it out and be sure not to miss the action at The Jeffreys Bay Surf Challenge on 28th April.

Wave Wizards Wrap

07/02/2012

Saturday the 4th of Febraury saw the season ending Wave Wizards surf series contest take place on Umhlanga’s Bronze beach. Although a ‘buster’ wind came out of the south west in the afternoon, for most of the day the surfers and spectators were blessed with idyllic weather conditions.

The points of the event were tallied up directly after the last heat was surfed but competitors were left in suspense until all was revealed at the pirates and princesses themed awards evening which was held at the Umhlanga Ski boat club later in the evening. Bygaining a finals birth in Saturdays competition, Umhlanga’s own Kyle Lane managed to snatch the series title away from Umdloti local Dan Redman, who won the final contest. In the masters division Evan Jenkins got the better of Umhlanga lifeguard James Elliott while the Bad Ballies/Vets division saw Eugene Ciaglia manage a comfortable series win over Andy Hogg.

Rising star Shane Sykes proved to be a force to be reckoned with when he came out tops in both the u/14 and u/18 boys divisions.

The gommets divisions were won by Saxton Randall in the u/10 and Calvin Goor in the u/12’s

Ladies surfing has come a long way over the past few years and the girls put on a great performance on Saturday. Westbrook’s Tam de Maroussem took out the Openseries ahead of Tatum Ambrose but a special mention must be made to the winner of the clubs most potential award and u/16 title, Teal Hogg who, surfing outside of her division managed the final contest win and a 3rd in the overall standings.

Jade Story was the runner up to Teal in the u/16’s while La lucia’s Kelly Medly took out the u/12’s with Sophie Bell in 2nd.

Committed club sponsors Hurricane Surf Co and Hurley supplied great prizes and were helped once again by Lundun eyewear, Monster energy drinks, Bar-Ba-Coa, Wavehouse and CI surfboards.

The Club’s AGM will be held this Thursday the 9th of Feb at Europa in Umhlanga Rocks. Those interested in attending are to please contact club chairman JestynViljoen via e-mail on jestyn@hurricanesurf.net
